Robinson would look insane with today's advnaces.
-
hahaha, brutal "60 inch chest" on Katz. ::)
-
Okay...THIS is me at 21.. :); Kal bicep;Kal Pec Dec; Me standing with Dennis...when have you ever seen a guest poser looking this good?-never, that's when !
-
I saw Kal training at World's gym, late 70's. He was very strong. He was doing seated cable rows with the whole stack, must have been over 350 pounds with two 45 pound plates attached. Amazing upper body..too bad his legs never matched up.
-
you def had some guns back then. Nice pics keep em coming. Love looking at the old school pics.
-
Robby just looks sik!
-
Another gratuitous shot of ME ;D;Dave lost 50 pounds on my weight loss system...;Me thinking I look good at 17 standing with SuperKal;Me looking at Dennis getting into his ultra-wide BDB...
-
Dennis shaking hands with Ronnie Mangum-Ronnie was one of the top East Coast bb's of the late 70's early 80's; Dennis Bask Lat Spread; This shot really shows Dennis' width; Jerry Mastrangelo, Me, Mike Katz at my 40th b-day party...Mike and Jerry have been in gym biz for 30 years.
-
Great set of photos Moose, and you look in great condition in the shot from 87.what weight class did you compete in.?
Kals biceps peak is just freaky.
-
these homosexual camps are outlawed today...........they moved them to the catholic churches

Thansk Chem...and to all for your kind comments. I will post more either today or tomorrow...and tell some stories to go along with them....to all the details enthusiasts...I will do my level best for the sake of accuracy.
Gotta go to the doc now...Mike
-
How the hell did Zane beat Robby??? He looks unreal in those pics
-
Here was a shot from M&F from when I was 36...you know, the issue where they have "top healthcare docs", or whatever... ;D

if you're talking about the doug bolous thread awhile back we'll chalk that up to a misunderstanding ;D
Kal's looking pretty huge in some of those shots....
-
Great pics Moose. You remind me of Casey Viator.
-
Real cool old school pics. Thanks for taking the time to post them.

Monster "Abs"
-
SuperKal DB (posted on another thread...but some of you may not have seen it...tremendous upperbody!; me at 18-168 lbs; me at 20-175 lbs; me at 24-186 lbs...same pose in all-you can see the progression....I ill post a few of me at 22, when I was my heaviest on stage (I think around low 190's), and had the misfortune of standing next to Vic Terra!
-
I will also post the calamity that occurred when I stood right next to Bob Chick at thw 1981 Teen America (I took 10th, bob 4th)...pic of me and Bob....all who disparage Bob will see how much of a teen wunderkind he was....
-

vic terra was unreal one of the best short bbers there was.nabba man all the way ,he tried npc's but couldn't make a dent.
-
Looking at Bob at this show, him at 15, me 17, I recall thinking, "How the F--- can someone look so thick at so young an age?
And, the drug test at this show was quite strngent...with over 100 entrants, I'd say MAYBE 10% were on something....unlike today's bogus 'natural' organizations (And I utter this cynical statement via firsthand experience)
-
vic terra was unreal one of the best short bbers there was.nabba man all the way ,he tried npc's but couldn't make a dent.
Your words ring true, he could have gone to the top in IFBB, but for reasons unknown to me it was not to be.
-
:o

:o
Thanks Shredder...I AM getting better at posting, though! :)
-
Mike HAHAHA all these people who were giving you shit are becoming your nut-huggers

wow that pic would be pretty cool
-
Mike HAHAHA all these people who were giving you shit are becoming your nut-huggers
Yeah, I guess.
But its all cool...when I originally came out with many of my stroies, I was not in any way a known entity here...thus the skepticism. Its all good.
-
Cool pics.....
So how was the Zane Experience? I've always thought that would fantastic.
It was very good. I will tell more about it when I post some more Zane photos. Gotta get 'em out from archives.
-
Wow, cool pics. Can't wait to see more. You look good there in that second shot.
Thanks Chem. I am glad I always took alot of photos. Zane always emphatically speaks of how important it was to have photos...its the only way to prove he was who he was...
-
Fantastic shots.
The Beef
Thanks Beef. I am very happy I have 'em, and even more happy for all of the great memories and experiences!
-
Thanks Chem. I am glad I always took alot of photos. Zane always emphatically speaks of how important it was to have photos...its the only way to prove he was who he was...
HAVE any terra photos?cool stuff moose.....
-
Robinson would look insane with today's advnaces.
Yes. I think with the advanced equipment his legs would be phenomenal. Note all the outstanding glutes and hamstrings compared to the golden era...I think this is largely due to better equipment...
-
I saw Kal training at World's gym, late 70's. He was very strong. He was doing seated cable rows with the whole stack, must have been over 350 pounds with two 45 pound plates attached. Amazing upper body..too bad his legs never matched up.
Easily for him.
When he was at my gym in 81, he repped four wheels on each side of the bar on inclines. His arms were not only gigantic, but he was stronger than he looked...
-
you def had some guns back then. Nice pics keep em coming. Love looking at the old school pics.
Thanks, man. Porbably my best bodypart. Everyone has one. I will keep posting if you guys like. I have more golden age pics that I took personally than I can recall...didn't think there'd be such interest...
-
vic terra was unreal one of the best short bbers there was.nabba man all the way ,he tried npc's but couldn't make a dent.
not to mention his his arrest for steroid distribution
-
Robby just looks sik!
Ahead of his time...for sure!
-
Great pics Mike. Thanks for posting them. I'd love to see more pics of you and Katz back in the day. 8)
-
Great set of photos Moose, and you look in great condition in the shot from 87.what weight class did you compete in.?
Kals biceps peak is just freaky.
Thanks Crownshep.
I never got big enough, in my opinion, but knew how to get ripped. We did some ridiculously stupid diets in the 80's. I was almost always in the light heavies, but have competed as a MW, LHW, and even once or twice as a HW.
Looked best at 186 to 190, for the most part. I think 87 was my best year condition wise, 86 was my biggest ever onstage...I will post some 86 pics with me and Vic Terra
Yes, Kal had dynamite arms...
-
How the hell did Zane beat Robby??? He looks unreal in those pics
Hey Mike
Good question...Robby and Zane are my two favorites of all time.
But, when it came to Olympia time, Robby would always mysteriously show up "off" conditioning wise. Zane would then trounce him.
Robby would destroy everyone in every other show, all year long, but, come O time, he'd hold water or whatever.
Very perplexing, to say the least!
-
if you're talking about the doug bolous thread awhile back we'll chalk that up to a misunderstanding ;D
Kal's looking pretty huge in some of those shots....
Haha...Dang, I forgot about that damn thread! Sorry about that...Brolus seems kind of goofy...I don't even recall the gist of that thread!
-
Great pics Moose. You remind me of Casey Viator.
Ha!
Really? Casey? THANKS...huge compliment...but I have never heard that!
I am no where even remotely as good as any of the following, but I have heard comparisons to Zane, Labrada, Samir, Leidelmeyer, and even Richard Baldwin and oldie Alan Steven....AGAIN....I am not in league with any of these guys...so don't y'all come down on me! Just what friends (very kind friends) have said! ;D
-
Real cool old school pics. Thanks for taking the time to post them.
My pleasure and honor, Tom. Glad so many folks are fond of 'em. I will proceed with more,
Mike
-
Great pics Mike................some bring back good memories for me during those years.
You looked friggin` great also!!
Thanks,can`t wait to see more!
-
No thank you for the pic's
Any time, my friend. I am currently convalescing from surgery...at home with not much to do....so here is a fun project for me!
-
HAVE any terra photos?cool stuff moose.....
Yes...and even though I am tremendously vanquished by him, when I locate them among the 1000+ that I have, I will post them...promise!
-
not to mention his his arrest for steroid distribution
Yeah...I remember that. Too bad... he seemed pretty smart and had a lot going for him without having to do that.
Proves that intelligence or coming off in an astute way is no proof of making good decisions...
-
Great pics Mike. Thanks for posting them. I'd love to see more pics of you and Katz back in the day. 8)
Hey Rip! How are you and your husband? Going to the NY Pro? I will be sitting in back of Bog Mike...he's judging.
Yeah...I have lots of Mike. Will post. I have been to his house and you have just GOT to see the stuff he has in his personal photo / memorabilia collection. Stuff with Arnold and Weider and the rest that would pop your gourd!!!
-

We're running the NPC Granite Cup/Maggiefit the same day as the NY Pro. :(
Have fun and tell Mike hello for us though...and I'll be sure to remember to get over to his place next time I am down in your next of the woods!!
-
I thought you were a nut a few months ago but I've changed my point of view....
Classic getbig syndrome. He was never a nut, you were.
Nice to see some pics of Szkalak; he along with Robby & Padilla don't get enough props. In part due to a dearth of pics, partially the political environment that led to questionable contest decisions and subsequent departures from the IFBB of most of the best BBs.

Haha...Dang, I forgot about that damn thread! Sorry about that...Brolus seems kind of goofy...I don't even recall the gist of that thread!
well that's the only time we had a run in that I can remember so....I guess it's all good in the hood.

speak when spoken to you piece of trash.

Okay...since I likely will not be posting any more shots till tomorrow, here is a cool Mike Katz story.
Around 5-6 years ago, Mike and I went to the Meadowlands to judge Kenny Cassel's (I think Kenny was the promoter) Women's Extravaganza.
We were at one end of the judge's table, and at the other end sat Robert Deniro.
He is a big Women's bb fan, I discovered.
Well, here's the interesting part:
There was figure and bb.
When the beautiful figure girls came out, Deniro would respectfully and calmly applaud.
Okay, no problem there.
When the most jacked, roided up women ever came out (I confess, I don't mean to offend anyone, but these jacked up women...well, ain't my cup, if ya know what I mean...)...I swear Deniro would get so nuts it was like he was doing the 'wave'!
I think he went most nuts over Vicki Gates (Or someone very similar to her).
Anyway...
Mike and I were given a hotel room to rest in.
While we were in repose, Mike's cell phone rang.
After a few seconds, I realized it was Arnold calling Mike.
For the rest of the day, Mike was kind of in a strange state of wonderment...he did not underatsnd why Arnold had called him in a call that lassted over 8 kinutes, just to shoot the sh--.
On the way home, he came to the realization that as they are now in their 60's...Arnold only feels really comfortable and trusts those who knew him when he had ' nary two shillings to rub together'...Mike and Franco and all those guys...so this is among the only times that he is himself and feels comfortable.
Rambling a bit...sorry...but it was cool/funny to be there that day.
More to come,
Moosejay
-
A cool little adendum to the above story...while we were there and walking through the hotel....a huge number of NY Jets and Giants were sitting around eating...and Mike and I walked right through their area...and I was flabbergasted at how many of the current players knew who Mike was...some even wanted his autograph (Mike Played with the Jets 67-69).
-
My pleasure and honor, Tom. Glad so many folks are fond of 'em. I will proceed with more,
Mike
You gonna make it to Joe's show this year? Buy a ticket in advance this year big guy ;)
-
Which show you mean? You mean Joe's Olympia? Probably not... ???
-
good stuff moose. The 70s and 80s were BBing's glory days. Would have been fun being part of the scene back then.
-
Thanks sfighter. I am happy I caught the tail end as a youth of the Golden Era...and was around real cool guys who showed me the way...
-
Me at 21; Kal doing autographs...Cheach's Gym, 1981; Kal, Ronny Mangum, Me, 1981; Big Kal hangin'
Ron Mangum, if I remember correctly was the big dude who went toe to toe with Steve O' Brien for the Natural Mr. California in 1980 (??).
MooseBoy-did Ron do the Natural CA. in 80 or 81... I am ALMOST positive he was the guy-a very very close contest that could have gone either way.
Let me know....... I might have to call Steve O' Brien up and ask him.
-
Easily for him.
When he was at my gym in 81, he repped four wheels on each side of the bar on inclines. His arms were not only gigantic, but he was stronger than he looked...
I remember the first time I went into Gold's Venice-81 or 82-Hampton Drive location-Sunday afternoon, pretty empty-except for Mike Christian and his workout partner, both repping out 405# on the incline, then on to flat benches for 500# reps............Never saw that shit in my local gym! ::)
-

i'm sure he was strong but i think i'd have to see that to believe it, how many reps?
-
Squad...serious, man...he did 6-8...clear in my mind because it was so shocking...I remember it very clearly
-

i don't know man maybe your memory is fuzzy, 6-8 with 315 i'd give him but 405? i'd have to see it in person.

Well, Ron won the Natural America held in Cali in 1980, I think he MAY have also gone in the Cal, but I am not too sure of that...Won most of the East Coast shows in late 70's...at very young age..

Yeah...Christian was a strong Mofo... I was unofficial chiropractor (Unofficial=I didn't get paid) for the McMahon WBFers... will tell ya a few tales about those dudes after I post some more...
-
Squad...serious, man...he did 6-8...clear in my mind because it was so shocking...I remember it very clearly
Mike Christian hit 405# for at least 8 on incline in 1981/82, saw it with my own eyes. Even better he went right to flat benches after that and hit 5 plates for reps......
I have never even seen anyone incline rep 315, then here was Mike doing 405 inclines after he won the Cal.....
i don't know man maybe your memory is fuzzy, 6-8 with 315 i'd give him but 405? i'd have to see it in person.
If Christian could do it, Kal most likely could too.

I will get around to asking my friend, Cheach, who awned the gym and was good friend with kal and used to train with Roger Callard...Callard used to Make Cheach and his friends call him "Uncle Roger"...and Cheach told me this was because he was pissed that Arnold used to make Callard call HIM "Uncle Arnold"
Cheach will recall the poundages for sure...I may be off
-

even if he recalls 405, 495, 585, whatever, i'm not believeing it unless i see it with Kal, Christian i'd believe maybe a heavily assisted single or double with 405 on incline but that's it, nobody gets to come on here and claim world class weights with no proof while i'm here, sorry.
-
Hmmm...okay, I respect your questioning these numbers.
However...
You really think Christian was stronger than Kal?
I have seen 'em both train up close, and I'd give it to Kal for pure, raw power.
Straight up, bro.
-
i don't know man, put it this way, on Cost of Redemption an offseason 305 pound Ronnie Coleman did 7 reps on the incline with 405 and 2 more with fingers on the bar, you're telling me Kal Szkalak did the same? ::)
-

BOOM! That seals the deal, that was Ron at the 1980 Natural Mr. California.
Steve O'Brien was tall AND big, while Ron was shorter but had more muscle, and killer abs......
I knew that name Ron Mangum rang a bell, and after the pics I knew that was him.
Perosnally I though Ron had Steve beat-but Steve looked very good-plus Steve was the local guy and was also buddies with the promoter of that show- BBer/Strongman Mike Dayton.
Steve O'Brien with then Girl Friend Julie Strain-future Penthouse Pet of the year (94?) and soft core porn star (and flat as a pancake back then).

Maybe not that, squad. My then 17 years old mind may have seen it as much more :)

Hey Johnny...great stuff. Yeah...Dayton did all the strong man stuff. Mangum was Mike Katz's protege and he really pushed him.
Julie Strain...yeah...don't I see her on the Spice Channel sometimes or sumpin like that?

I believe Kal was that strong. I had a friend from the gym who lived in California in the late '70's (1977-1980) and he said Kal was so strong on the bench press and incline press, it looked like the weights were made of rubber. He was routinely benching over 500 and would do reps with 400 on both the flat and incline. He was also very strong on front squats, believe it or not, despite his weak leg development. I went to a Boyer Coe seminar in 1980 (about a month after the 1980 Olympia) and Boyer said he saw Kal train legs and he would train them very hard and very heavy, it was mostly a matter of genetics that his legs were so out of proportion to his upper body.
-
Hey Natural O...I knew I recalled his heavy incliunes for a reason...
I went to Cali in 1980 when I was 16 to stay with relatives and check out the gyms...stayed in Torrance and trained at a gym called Barlow's...anyone recall that place?
Anyone recall ABC sports coverage of the O the year Kal took 5th to Zane?
They had a capsule on him showing himn doing standing calf raises...and the commentator was saying something like, "Here's Kal S...largest upper body in the world...but will his weak lower body hold him from annexing the big title...?
-

I remember seeing that on TV also. I was at the 1978 Olympia in person (also the 1977, 1979 and 1981 Olympia's) and Kal was very, very popular with the crowd. When he was hitting his most musculars at the pre-judging, the audience was going absolutely crazy. He had the biggest chest and arms in the show and he was also very RIPPED for a big guy. His chest was striated from top to bottom and his rear double biceps was also very ripped. He hit a crucifix pose when he was announced in 5th place and that was his last IFBB competition.
-
Hell...I remember they put the crucifix pose on the cover of Bob Kennedy's MM Annual, and it was VERY controversial....my dad and I were supposed to go to the 1978 or 79 Olympia...but he could not get time off so I didn't go...always regretted that...
-
Which show you mean? You mean Joe's Olympia? Probably not... ???
Bev's show @ Tribecca on june 7th NYC
-
Yeah...Ct...I will probably go to that...usually do...last year, they were actually SOLD OUT...and I went expecting to get tix at the door...went to see a friend in the show...and they wouldn't let me in....but I think you know this....Joe P???
I did just drop $500 on 5 tix for the NY pro today... :)

I heard u didnt get in last year, better get your tix early.
Any idea what your NY PRO seats are? I wanna go but I hate the way you have to buy tix, isn't pretty much potluck, with 2 price ranges.
-
Yeah...I called Steve's gym first today...and said I wanted the best tix they had...as close to front center as possible...and the kid didn't have much of a clue...so I bought the most expensive ones (And I am not usually a spendthrift)...and must hope for the best. Yes...its kinda helter skelter, usually....

I prefer tradition and miss the Night of the Champions back at the beacon. But the Tribecca is small so really no matter where you sit its not all that bad.
-
Yeah...we went to the Beacon for years and would always eat at that semi-outdoor restaurant where many of the judges and luminaries would dine...you are right...pretty much good views everywhere at the Tribecca...and my girl likes it...so, as I am trying to live as sass-free as possible these days.... :)
-
Kal still has the guns
Does anyone know how old this pic is ?

Hell...I remember they put the crucifix pose on the cover of Bob Kennedy's MM Annual, and it was VERY controversial....my dad and I were supposed to go to the 1978 or 79 Olympia...but he could not get time off so I didn't go...always regretted that...
I was there in 78 and I remember the moment well. When they called out Kal's placing, the look on his face was intense. He didn't grimace or anything, but you could tell he was hurt. He really thought he deserved better. Then he put his arms out in that crucifiction pose and tilted his head to the side..totally spontaneous. I remember getting so caught up in the moment, at 16 years of age, that I actually shed a tear. It was that dramatic. And no.. I'm not gay! Kal believed his attempt to form a bodybuilding union had resulted in the "Powers that Be" crucifying him.
-
Kal still has the guns

Quite recent

Chem...you were there...very lucky!
I recall the M Builder where they had the meeting for the union...Kal was wearing those suspenders lookin huge...thing was...A and Franco were suuposed to support his efforts, and then, purportedly, they did not.
Shortly after...it was reported that Kal tussled with J Weider in his office over getting his photos out of his file...surreal...

Hey Moose, I sent you a PM.

Just saw it chem...sent cha one back.

sorry man but gonna call bullshit on this one, no offense.
This guy was only 5'7, 5'8, 250# and could hit 405 inclines for 6-8 with good form (and yes, I was an eyewitness);
Funny thing is he could barely hit 405 on squats though despite large wheels........
-
Rick Stephenson? I do remember him...what were his titles??
-
Rick Stephenson? I do remember him...what were his titles??
Excellent physique there.
-
He won the Mr. California I think but he never won the Nationals. He was a successful gym owner in San Diego.

Yes...I recall when he was a regular competitor....tip-top echelon...and yes from Cali
-
Rick Stephenson? I do remember him...what were his titles??
Yes, the Cal in 88 was his only major win, came in 2nd to Shawn Ray in 87-if rick had a back he would have beat Shawn.
He was a successful gym owner in San Diego.
Well, if you call Ed Connors "gifting" you a Gold's Gym, the very first Gold's Gym that was a licensee other than Ed Connors, one where Rick did not have a single dime to put in for an investment, then I guess you might call that successful.
I would call it one in a million luck myself.
BTW, Ed also gave Jim Quinn a percentage of Gold's San Diego, and Rick forced Jim out. Jim was PISSED! Said he was going to "drag Ricks head along a freeway divider".... honest to god.
-
One more of Rick, and to be honest I think Rick had a pro physique, could easily have competed in the pro's;
-
Yeah...I'd agree that'd be a pro physique

Good thread. Man, you did well to drop the '70's porn 'stache. :D

Chimp-Master: you referring to me?
That was worn in the 80's actually, and the 'Time To Make The Donuts' was quite the thing.
I knew it was time to shave when comedians in bars I bounced in started making fun of me/it....

Reminds me of John Holmes...... ;D

He looks good, but no arms.
He was no Ronnie Abston, that's for sure.

"bars you bounced in"? aren't you like 180 pounds?
-
About 185-190...and I was a very good diplomat with drunkards.
They would not even know I dissed them while throwing them out till they were home.
I NEVER hit one person in seven years.
I saw a 160 pound guy kick the Hell out of a 300 pounder. He told the big guy to take his coat off...when he did, that's when the little guy pummeled the s--- out of him.
The Illinois collegiate HW wrestling champion challenged the lean, 185 pound me to fight.
I told him, "I will fight you. But there will be no honor in how I fight you. I will claw at your flesh, Grab your balls...hit you with a bottle, pull the hair out of your head...kind like a crazy girl.
"Well, the whole bar got quiet. The huge guy looked at me.
"You know, " he said. "I cause trouble all over town, and I have never it heard it put towards me that way..."
And they left.
Yes...he would of killed me. But diplomacy won.
And I was very scared.

Bouncing was a good job, fun, and I was not studying Fri or Sat nights, so it was a good opp to make $ and be out at the same time.
I never fought, never have fought, don't know how to fight, and never will fight.
I didn't get into bb to intimidate anybody, and I was raised well and did not have anger or aggression issues.
And I get along with everyone, including you, squad.
-
why did you want to be a "bouncer" then?
-
Well...good question. I was taking 30 credits per trimester in college at the time...and needed money, as most students do.
Had no time to work regular hours...so I took the boiuncing job (or, doorperson) because it was on weekend nites when I would either be sleeping or not in class anyhow.
It was good, under the table money, and I met a lot of gals and hung with friends....damn
come to think of it
THAT is when I had it made! ;D
-
are you sure you were 185 here, you look more like 136-138 range here.
-
Squad...to be fair...they kept small me at the front door for ID check and greeting, as I was more presentable.
The gorilla huge bouncers were in the back....unleashed them when really necessary!
-
are you sure you were 185 here, you look more like 136-138 range here.
I was 21 there...and about low 170's...never said I was 185 in that shot. If you read through...there are pics up of me at 190.
More will come later from 1986-1987...my biggest onstage weights of 185-190.
Squad, why do you never believe anything?
There is no conspiracy with me. I generally don't lie.
-

come on dude just be honest, you don't look low 170's there, your legs look like they're 18 inches around and your head is bigger than your torso.

Rick looks good there. Never seen these photo's before.
Yeah, he's a short guy...& I know he was strong...but didn't know he weighed 250 pounds. I thought he was around 225?
And besides Jim & Rick...I thought there was another guy that had a partnership untill Rick broke it off?
-
Well, I was 170's...despite your interpretations.
Like I said, I have never been totally satisfied...which is why I still train squad.
For your happiness...I will poost 190 lb shots later...where I look 225 onstage.
Which is what its all about...ONSTAGE.
Like some say Zane looked like a swimmer...well...he was Mr. O onstage...
-
One more of Rick, and to be honest I think Rick had a pro physique, could easily have competed in the pro's;
he was a good BB.....predicted he'd win the nationals one year and didn't then he fell off the face of the earth.
-
Yes, Al.
He stived to the business world and left that of bb. Had he persisted, he could have reached the heights.
-

Actually Rick CLAIMED to weigh in at 260#...cough...bullshit...cough...cough.
As for the gym ownership there were well over 10 partners in the begining with varying ownership degrees.
Jim was not actually an owner until 88, or 2 years after Edny sold the gym to Connors and crew..... Steve Henneberry (Tower on American Gladiators) was an original owner (10%), Pat Dillion was an original owner (25%, Dan Duchanies steroid partner, also lent Rick the $10K Rick needed to buy in), Jon Depolo (Opened San marcos?escondido Gold's in 91) became an owner in 87, Dave Zacherey in 88...... plus a few others not worth mentioning.............
Yes, Al.
He stived to the business world and left that of bb. Had he persisted, he could have reached the heights.
Rick looked GREAT from the front-his main problem was when he turned around, no back detail....an earlier version of Nasser if you will........When you see the 87 Cal video with Shawn Ray they both looked fantastic from the front, with Rick being slightly harder-but when they turned around it was game over for Rick. No back detail, while Shawn had detail everywhere.
he was a good BB.....predicted he'd win the nationals one year and didn't then he fell off the face of the earth.
Rick was without doubt the best BBer in San Diego in the late 80's..... and when Jerry Rodgers won the 1990 Nationals, and Rick placed 4th behind Ron Coleman, Rick could not cope or handle the defeat. Rick always considered himself the best in the San Diego area, and the fact someone locally beat him burned him up (in 1988 Cathy Wright won the womens overall CAL, while Rick won the mens title, and Rick hated sharing the spot light with Cathy-hated it).
In addition, Milos Sarcev, who was scared to train at Gold's, had finally joined up Gold's in 1990 and had sent a pic of himself to Ben Weider asking to be granted pro status, and Weider said yes. Now remember, Rick at this time had 20+ inch arms, had won the Cal, placed in numerous national shows- while Milos had 17.5 inch arms and had just come off a 5th place HVYWT placing at the 89 Cal. And yet 6 months later Milos was a Pro. Rick could not deal with that either.

I like Rick...but you have to admit he is an ego maniac.
And like I said....Maybe 225....I seriously doubt he was above that. He was/is pretty short, small to medium frame.

Rick though he was some busniness guru after the success of PB Gold's (none of it due to him or his management!).
Rick woud always go arond spouting off about how he "has a business to run"...lol, like he is Warren Buffett Jr.
The fact is PB Gold's was successful in spite of Rick-it is that simple.
Rick was not very smart, was LUCKY enough to have an opportunity to buy into the gym thru Connors, was even luckier to have been able to BORROW $10K as buy in money from Dilllion (who he stabbed in the back later on), and got even more luck when Connors sold Rick his shares-Connors stopped doing that later on with the gyms he bought.

Well, one thing he was smart about...is the building is paid for & in his name. No matter what, he was smart or sneaky how he did that one.
He also for years made good money with that giant murial he had painted on the side of the building. That made him tons of money every month.
-
come on dude just be honest, you don't look low 170's there, your legs look like they're 18 inches around and your head is bigger than your torso.
Be honest Squad, do you have any photos floating around where you are at least in half-way decent shape? No? Didn't think so. You remind me of those insult-clowns at the fair sitting on top of the water tank that you throw the baseballs at to dunk them in. Sometime's your stuff is downright hilarious, but other times it just comes off bitter..ridiculing anyone who's shown some discipline and commitment to get in shape.
-
Hey Johnny...great stuff. Yeah...Dayton did all the strong man stuff. Mangum was Mike Katz's protege and he really pushed him.
Julie Strain...yeah...don't I see her on the Spice Channel sometimes or sumpin like that?
Dayton's physique from that angle looks perfect.
Lets face it everyone here would give their left nut to have the abs and chest in that shot.
-

The building is not paid for, he bought the building in 92 or so, for $850K on a 30 SBA small business loan, so he has a few years to go on the payment. That building sat vacant for over 4 years prior to PB Gold's buying it. Used to be a Toyota dealership, teh bank that owned that building failed, so the gov ened up owning it (because they received the failed banks assets)....
The old Gold's building, although smaller ( I have never been in the new one) was awesome, all windows in the front, cool buildout...really liked the old location-did not have enough parking though...... The new owners of the old locaton, a Nissan Dealer, tore down the Burger King and other building that was in front, so now there is TONS of parking!!!!!

Maybe it can be looked up....but thats what I hear & one is from an old business partner of his

Not unless he paid it off 15 years early...but that is possible, though not likely because there are major ta advantages to having real property interest payments...only way to know for sure would be to visit the SD Recorders office on PCH ad look for a Trust Deed lien.
BWT, which old partner said that??

Well, I heard (I know this sounds crazy) but he was getting $10,000 a month in advertising for the Murial that was on the side of the building for Sea World.
His friend/associate is a friend of mine that owned Golds in Scripps. Granted, not business partners, but were friends & associates. He helped him move from the old location to the new one on garnet.

Hey, Moose! How ya do'en ? I've been on the road between No Cal, So Cal, Tahoe, and points asunder and haven't been reading these worthwhile posts too very often but your recent pics and input have stirred up some old memory cells which I'll do my best to comment on here.
Mike - Dayton. I knew Mike when he used to compete and attend various events un and down the Bay Area Peninsula during the peak of his hanging with a noose around his neck routine. A bit crazy, but one hell of a nice guy.
And I judged Stephenson in one of his first US contests if I recall correctly. He was still in the USAF and competed in and the Armed Forces contest on some island in the Pacific (but I also believe he competed in and won one of the contests held on one of the overseas military bases prior to that event).
Regardless of all that, it was definitely evident that he was going to be one of the best in California once he was released from active duty.
A few years later we visited Rick and his partners in the Pacific Beach Golds and I recall that it was one of the first gyms I'd ever seen with tube neon lit signage.
During that short two hour visit, Rick introduced us to his business partners, one of which/whom was prepping for an upcoming So Cal contest and it appeared to us that he was going to be the man to beat. Sorry I forgot his name but he was the younger partner with a most impressive build.
I always got Rick mixed up with another impressive bodybuilder from around that same time period. After winning a show we judged, he and his beautiful wife moved to California and got a job at Universal Studios playing the title character in the Conan show, which at that time was the major attraction in the park. One of you GetBiggers may recall whom I am speaking of as either he or his wife was related to John Wayne of movie fame and I'd sure like to recontact them to see how life has been treating them.
Same with Rick.
BTW, I did not realize that Pete G had more than three other partners at the time he bought Gold's in Santa Monica from Ken Sprague. Any help heere?
Thanks for the interest in my input, Moose. I'll try to get back to this business ASAP.
-
Thanks Stunt...talk to ya soon,
Moose

I think they are talking about the Gold's down south not Venice. By the way the guys who know Gold's down South have you ever heard of a girl who trained there named Kim Grady. She was a very hot and freindly blind girl who I knew trained at one of the Gold's. I did a movie that we shot in Mission Bay and she was one of the bikini models. I was seeing her for awhile till I moved to Hawaii and we lost touch.
-

I know that ended a few years ago

One thing most people get confused with Rick is the tattoo he has that say's "Ranger"
They automatically assume he was in the Army but in fact went to Ranger school while serving in the Air Force

No...don't know her.
Then again...I was very low key & never talked to many people there. In that whole gym there was only a handful on women that trained there. One was Sandra Blackie....& the other used to wear as little clothing as possible. She used to wear tank & cutoff tops....then used to do alot of chin ups & pull downs where her shirt used to rise up alittle too far.
It was pretty distracting to the point when I saw her coming, I would go to the other side of the gym because she used to attract to many guys starring.

Ed Connors put neon lights on the inside of all the gyms he was running in the late 80's. That was one of his trade marks.
The young partner you speak of is Jon Depolo, who later opened up San Marcos/Escondido Golds. Great build, minus the arms. Best legs in the gym. Won the Palm Springs and also beat Milos in the 89 Cal hvywt's, where Jon took 4th to Milos's 5th. Not a very smart or bright guy (similar to Rick actually), but well liked.

I worked out at that Gold's in Pacific Beach from 1988 to 1991 and remember both of them very well. Rick was always very friendly and upbeat, Jon I didn't talk to much. What makes you think they weren't very smart?
-
Johnny, Swartzen ...... I know that Rick introduced us to two of his gym partners there that day and one of them probably was Jon but the impressive one (first name was Dave I think) at that time who was probably training for the LA contest or the Cal contest (the only two major worthwhile contests at that time outside of the NPC national events) was the youngest kid with blond hair who we figured would win the Cal or the LA or any west coast contest he chose to enter.
I lost contact with all of them due to some problem in some minor foreign country someplace and would really like to contact Rick again and see what he's been up to.
Moose, you mentioned in another post that those were the good old days of bodybuilding and I have to agree entirely and maybe stretch those good old days back evem a bit further to the 50's.
Times have not changed too very much because even back then the guys who trained and packed on the muscle were just as much "despised" as they appear to be by many of these "GetBiggers" on this board today. But the worst we were ever called back then was "Muscle-Bound" or "Muscle-Head" and I loved that because it let me know that I was making gains.
Anything worse was usually settled by punch to a nose or twenty paces from the front end of a BB gun (actually happened once).
Times sure have changed today. Now we yell at each other over longer and much safer distances.

Ha stunt...you ain't kidding. Loggerheads used to be settled by maybe a fistfight...now you could get yourself blown away.
Yeah...the good old days...they ain't never comin' back....

I worked out at that Gold's in Pacific Beach from 1988 to 1991 and remember both of them very well. Rick was always very friendly and upbeat, Jon I didn't talk to much. What makes you think they weren't very smart?
Dave Zachery??? Craig Lymann??? I knew everyone that worked Gold's from the time they bought the gym in 86 until I left, in 92, so who are you???
As for Jon and Rick not being the sharpest tools in the shed, you are kidding right???
Jon Depolo would have been working at McDonald's if Rick did not give him his job. Rick would have been working at McDonald's if Connors had not given him his job. Get serious, the only reason either of them were there is because they were brought in thru connections-Rick did not have a dime to his name in 86 when Ed bought the gym in 86, he drove to San Diego from AZ on a beat up motorcycle with everything he owned in a backpack.
Both Rick and Jon were/are of less than average intelligence.

I lost contact with all of them due to some problem in some minor foreign country someplace and would really like to contact Rick again and see what he's been up to.

Thanks, Johnny. I will give him a call and see what's up.
Regarding the guy who was so damn impressive. I believe it was Dave Zachery. Was he or was he not one of Rick's partners? And if he was the guy preparing for the LA or the Cal, how did he do and did he ever compete again?
I never did train there. We just stopped by to say hello to Rick on our way down to MCRD.
Now I do recall Rick's RANGER tattoo and I do know that he was in the AF when I initially met him, but wasn't he an Army RANGER before switching over to the AF? Can't understand why anyone would get a Ranger tattoo if he never was in fact - a Ranger.
Kind of like an Army guy getting SEMPER FI tattooed on his chest.
Thanks for the info Johnny.

Dave Zachery worked the front desk as a small equity partner in 88 on, dont knwo when he left. He has been workign for Icarian/Precore fitness the last few years, in Sun Valley/LA.
Dave also ran the SF Gold's with Jon Loyd and Barry Clothier. Dave got all these jobs thru Ed Connors, from when you worked out at (and worked the front desk) Gold's Venice.
Dave went into the 89 San Diego and took a very close second, and that was the last show he did. Very good upper body, but no wheels. You are probably speaking abpout Jon Depolo though-who was better than Dave as a BBer, and did go into the Cal in 89-taking 4th in the HVYWT's, one palce in front of Milos.

Kal was very strong on triceps,so i could imagine him repping with 4 plates on the incline no problem.

So was Rick army or AF then????? I dont get it.... ::)
BTW, why the hell is there an age limit for the service??? I called up last year and the said I was too old.
Why not just do physical testing-you pass the test you're in, you fail you're out...... seems pretty simple to me.......I dont get that.

Well, they have to figure you on retiring before or at age 55. So subtract 55-20 years. Pretty much...there you go.
Rick was in the Air Force.
A good friend of mine was a Marine too & he used to work out with Rick back in the early 80's. Rick told him he was in the Air Force but went to Ranger school.

55 is a mandatory retirement age for the service???
If so, that may explain it-except for times of war--then anyone should be able to join.

Is it also true that you can enlist up to age 43? If so, I missed by a year...
The above photos of Kal are impressive...I am still pretty sure he was reppin' 405 on the incline in my gym when I was a kid...
