Title: Lets put it to a vote (POLL)
Post by: Stubborn on June 03, 2008, 04:17:05 PM
First I just want to thank Chris Mason, Alan, and RON for all the support for these competitions we put on!

AtLargeNutrition.com (http://AtLargeNutrition.com)                                                                         ProWristStraps.com (http://ProWristStraps.com)

We want to keep these competitions going every few months. We have many ideas on what the comp COULD be and I thought it best we vote on what the next one will be.

Just a question on the overhead press. Does this include any leg drive or is it a strict military press?

i said 315 squat because it would require the least "hedging" in terms of the competitors. either you hit parallel or you didn't. won't be any "i swear i didn't use any leg drive on those reps" or, if leg drive is allowed, "I didn't dip under it like a jerk".

and keep in mind i didn't vote for that because i've got ANY chance of winning that one. i just think it'd be the best. personally, i think the Mr Getbig should coincide with a full-blown PL meet. weight classes and all.

how about a lb for lb contest or division?
I would have liked to do the 550 deadlift but i couldnt get that weight 405 is doable, we already did a 225 dead, and bench why not a 225 squat or are we trying to go heavier b/c this is the powerlifting board? although repping out with 225 on squats makes my stomach turn just thinking about it.

I'm down for something lb for lb as long as the rules and calculations are spelled out in advance and everyone agrees.

Hopefully the timing would work out OK for me with my other comps, because I'm pretty sure I could take most of you big boys.   8)

While I love that idea in principle, depending on the resolution/clarity of the vids people post, it's gonna be pretty hard to judge depth on squats.  Also there would need to be strict instructions to the entrants on what angle to shoot from--and all contestants would need to shoot from the same angle for fairness' sake--so that depth could be judged accurately.  'course that's not an issue with the DL, and not really with the BP (though with the BP you have the issue of whether it is touch and go...).

I gave Rip pretty good instructions about how to film herself squatting but she didn't appreciate them and she still hasn't posted a video.

I go for the overhead press - either one is good.

Vids are coming soon, I promise.  But probably not exactly how you suggested I shoot them.   ;D

I was torn between squat and deadlift, but went 405 deadlift because I thought it could be hard to judge a squat and the whole leg drive and jerk thing on the overhead press would be complicated

I've assumed that the overhead press would be seated. I would go for the deadlift one too but squats can be too easily manipulated and there wold be arguments about whether or not parallel would be achieved.

Standing and you do it however you can get it up. Jerk, push press, strict, whatever gets it overhead. Bar pauses in bottom position, press to full lockout, and hold for a second to show full lockout.

Come up with some ideas as to how we can verify peoples weight 100% AND be sure they are weighing themselves and lifting on the same day. Honor system only goes so far. Im sure I can get a scale to say, convincingly, that I am 50lbs less than I am and still zero out correctly. So why cant someone else?

Ditto.

I think the 405 Deadlift is the easiest one for people to agree on. Weight on the floor, pick it up, simple.

I like the overhead press but I think seated will be hard to judge. People tend to turn it into an incline press and then claim it was "strict." If its standing and you are allowed to jerk, jump, or however you can get it up, it turns into a brute strength event where the whole body is included. In a strongman competition there is no rule, just get it up, lock it out, the end. We could make it a clean and press event too. What do you guys think?

sounds like we're angling for a PL board strongman competition. y'know my gym DOES have a log unit handy...

225 Overhead or 405 Deadlift

Squat is too hard to judge and based on past quality of videos it will be a mess.

Also, you could wear tight briefs while squating and nobody would know.

Thats what I was thinking too. You COULD even have a suit on with baggy clothes over it. Most people seem to like the squat but I wonder how many would actually make it through judging? I think we would have to just say that the contest is Ass-to-Calves, nothing less. Then we would have to have standard clothing as to minimize the possibility of using supportive gear.

Daisy Dukes and Tube Tops all around! :P

the issue with teh squatting which i discussed with lift4size was parallel. camera agles can be very deceiving unless just right. you could also alter them to make it look they are below parallel.

i say hold 185 OHP

As regards the squat, the mods could specify strict guidelines that the video must adhere to. The video is submitted and reviewed by the mods. The mods can then either approve or disprove illegitimate reps or videos?

makes sense. i like the WSM idea of picking a weight and saying you've got 75 seconds to get it overhead as many times as you can.

we'd have to do weight classes though, just to make it fair. some of the dudes here are solid in the 270s, i'm a 220 and i think tony would, with a quick drop of water, be a 198.

If we were to do weight classes then I think only the top 1 or 2 spots of each weight class would win prizes. Unless of course we had 20 people enter or only did 2 weight classes (as it is in many Strongman comps). Typically you will find 231lbs and under AND 232lbs and over. It seems to work out pretty well. Sometimes there is a middle weight class but when it comes to Nationals its light and heavy weight only.

Perhaps if we were to do the 315 Squat we could use a universal depth. Say, in the video, you had to put a bungee cord in the rack and show you taking the measurement from ground to cord and then every rep would have to hit that depth? Touch the cord and go. Maybe 12 inches? You would have to be taller than 6' 3" or shorter than 5' 10" for it to really affect your lifts one way or another. I realize everyones depth differs a bit but it seems to be one of the only (2) ways to be as sure as possible that there is no funny business.

We would also need the judges to pay attention to if they see briefs or a suit in the vid as they would be prohibited. Magoos vid will be easy to judge as he cares not for long, baggy clothes. ;)

we have weight classes to determine the weight needed to use for the feat. i want, say, rip to have a chance but if we're doing 315 squats she won't exactly be getting a dozen reps, you know? then we look around for the best weight coefficient formula and judge the top 3 based on that. absolute lifts always favor bigger lifters.

squat style would be HUGE on this though. a wider squatter simply won't get that low unless their groin is abnormally flexible. parallel would be the fairest, but we'd have to do a VERY strict thing for taping. not to mention if you have a large ass/hamstrings, the cord depth would allow you to get higher than someone with smaller legs. that's why they don't do the cord idea in PL meets (as I was rather angrily told by a meet organizer on a PL board...  :P ).

Nice try on the cover up! I know you are a man-whore and the revealing clothing is just as good as a billboard in your gym. How's tricks anyway?

I know why you want multiple weight classes and we can do that. Just think of how many people we have ACTUALLY entering these things though. Not a lot of room for many weight classes.

The only other way I can think to make the squat more fair is to go ass to grass every rep. Anything paralell or above does not count. Simply because, as goudy said, the slightest camera angle change can make a bad squat look good.

i think weight classes are a good idea but i dont know if we could get enough ppl to make that succesful. I like the cord idea but can see how that might help some and hurt others...lol shoot 12 inches is probably close to parallel for me as im only like 5'7"...maybe an overall prize and a lb for lb prize or a body weight contest where you weigh yourself and do the exercise with that weight sepreately or in addition to the original contest...iono just spitballing

why not have two at once.

315 squat and 185 OHP

Alternatively it is possible to cheat tho thats the risk we take.

Appoint 3 judges and their decision is final. That could solve a lot though they must be done is shorts to minimise discrepencies.

OHP WITH leg drive would cause the least problems. I would do that one myself

i'd do it. my "push press" is kinda shit, but if we go "by any means necessary" i'm pretty sure i could do okay.
