Title: IFL is Gone
Post by: onlyme on June 16, 2008, 06:27:06 PM
When is the last show for the IFL.  There is no way they are doing many more of these.  Very badly run organization

It is a shame I thought the whole team concept was extremely interesting. Unfortunately any of the fighters who were really that good would eventually get picked up by one of the bigger orgs and realize they can make more money as a solo fighter then on a team. If this is true I wonder where Bas is going to show up....

They fucked up pretty bad by dropping the superfights they had when they started.  They had some good match ups.

Team concept never made sense for MMA. It's not a team sport. Terrible ideas from former Showtime Boxing chief Jay Larkin.

I thought it was an interesting concept but I guess we all have our opinions. I mean technically they call collegiate.high school wrestling a team sport but it is left up to the individual to carry that match. I would disagree with you about the team aspect. It takes an entire gym to make a champion. Training partners and such.  I train at a MMA gym and I would say we are a team but hey like I said we all have our opinions

Well the lack of popularity of collegiate wrestling speaks for itself. One on One sports thrive on the marketing and promotion of the individual competitors. That's why the Davis Cup in tennis is virtually ignored and team karate tournaments only flourished when Billy Zabka led the Cobra Kai to near victory 25 years ago.

Besides, there wasn't even any innovation in the scoring. One point per victory? At least collegiate wrestling rewards pins and major victories with extra points. How interesting were tournaments in the IFL after a team won the first three matches and clinched victory? About as exciting as watching the last seven innings of a baseball game when your team is up 13-0.

Seriously, for a guy who once had Mike Tyson under contract, Larkin shouldve known better. If there was a Team Tyson in boxing consisting of fighters Mike handpicked, would that make you watch or even care? We care about the competitor we come to know and the IFL never did its job of emphasizing the individual competitor, hence its failure.

I never bought into the team concept, either, but what really doomed this org from the start is that they immediately tried to compete with the UFC by booking large venues without first building up a fan base. Had they started from the ground up, booking 500-100 seat venues, and working from there, they might have had a shot.
