Title: My chest is weak
Post by: jml3001 on August 19, 2008, 03:52:19 PM
I've been trying a lot of different routines for chest, and nothing seems to add any more mass.  I've gone up to 315 on bench, and as low as 185 for 20 reps - nothing gives me a good pump in my chest, and nothing seems to add mass.  I have the same problem for biceps.  I have a strong back and triceps - but my chest and biceps suck.  Any advice on how to increase mass / pump?

Thanks.

to get a nice pump in the chest mainly upper chest, do a side lateral raise with db's and hold the db's at the top as long as possible. bring your arm's inward to switch it up some

your welcome

I don't know - I think that might be why I'm not getting any heavier than 205, but I don't think it would be why my chest is not proportional to my back.  I think I just have a harder time effectively training chest.

Perhaps it's your form. Do you flare your elbows or tuck them in? When I tuck mine in it does nothing for me at all.

You've mentioned lifts only for the BB bench.  Are you dumbbell benching/shoulder pressing, etc?  If not, do that intensely for a few months and get back to us.  If you don't get a pump from dumbbells, you might want to consider picking up a new hobby ;D

Have you tried negatives? Some ideas:

- Doing a dumbell press and lower the weight by making a slow flye movement.
- A machine press with both arms and lower it slowly with 1 arm.

For biceps you can try a heavy single dumbell curl by curling the weight with some help with the other hand (or training partner) and lower it slowly.

With 'slow' I mean 5-10 seconds. Also try to keep continuous tension on your chest by not extending your arms completely.

Give it a try, good luck!

Side laterals for chest, makes prefect sense to me ::)

Maybe you should try actually using that kind of poundage, instead of just imagining it and posting them on the GetBig boards. That will certainly help your weak spot!

Might try dips on a V bar for that over rated pump you crave. Even yet, have the knuckles facing forward and the elbows out wide, tucking the chin in and drawing the legs up at the same time.... Gironda style. You should get a outstanding pec stretch and pump. Drop regular BB BP's for awhile. Not really the best pec builder for most people.

Might also do Pec decks. Elbows on the pads...not with the hands way out. Than do a set of DB BP's right after, no rest. This is the Pre-Exhaust system. Or try the one and one half system with DB's. Lot's of tricks out there to get a good misleading pump. Good Luck

Side Bar: Quickerblade sound like a lot of Aussie surfers I have met in Hawaii,Tonga, Mexico and SoCal. Surfing, rooting & Fosters. Though not always in that order. But always a root rat 24/7.

maybe you dont eat enough to grow
eating more than necessary doesn't have anything to do with muscle growth, if it did americans would be muscular instead of obese

Eating about 10-20% above caloric maintenance level could mean a BIG differende. This article shows some excellent guidelines; http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance_bodybuilding/nutrition_for_newbies_part_2

I would say: "SQUAT and EAT to GROW!"  ;D

You once said you repped 315+ on the incline bench. Even if your chest might not be proportional to the rest of you, Debussey assumes that you are pretty fucking big and strong (given that you did not lie about the lift).

Lower the weights, raise the rep counts.

Get a good stretch with dumbell flies... maybe try some pullovers across a bench.

do some work more directly on the triceps- maybe you can add some strength to them and in turn, increase your bench strength.

try some good ol fashioned volume work for the burn and the pump- learn to really feel the muscles when you squeeze them.

Eventually you may wanna try some weighted dips on a Roman Chair or a set of parallel bars.
