Title: The NWO
Post by: Karl Kox on March 12, 2009, 03:10:49 PM
Whats you thoughts on the NWO ?  It was a great angle to me when It first started but toward the end it got to be a little to much.

I agree...when there got to be nWo red, nWo blue, etc.  It was a stretch at the beginning, too, to think that these four or five guys could punk out the whole federation (nobody ever came from the back to help...once in a while Sting would decend from the rafter)

A friend of mine and I had a blast with the nWo...there was this woman at our office who still thought wrestling was real (I swear the bitch was retarded but I can't prove it)...whenever she sent out an department-wide e-mail, we would each respond talking smack about how the nWo was the best, that WCW wrestlers sucked ass, etc.  We would end every note with "the nWo is 2 sweet....4-life."  She would then write a ten-page angry response that we would ignore (sounds like a gas cap saleswoman) and talk more shit about the nWo being honest, hardworking, God-fearing men, etc.  She would go home in tears almost every day.

NWO in it's beginning was fantastic... The best angle in the history of Wrestling I'd say.

They never knew when to give it up though... It just kept going and going and going... and that's when it got shitty and went down hill.

The beginning was magic though.

I would say that having the Iron Sheik team with Nikolai Volkoff was the best imo. Especially how he sang the Russian national anthem, that really pissed people off at the time.

Considering the time frame... early 90s and what not... Yeah... That too was a great angle for it's time. It had fantastic heat.

The thing that made the NWO special was how they were just ridiculously hated.

Whenever hogan came out with the original NWO (Hall and Nash) people would throw all kinds of shit at them in the middle of the ring... people absolutely HATED them.

SGT. Slaughter heel turn during the Gulf War was great to me.

It disappointed me tbh. He was my hero as a little guy.

I actually liked some of the early speeches the nWo made...breaking kayfabe to a point (Hall made a point to complain about certain wrestlers sticking around too long just so they could push their sons, and didn't leave anything else for more deserving wrestlers).

THAT piper/hogan clip ,hogan never had great build, and he actually got lean during that run,but he looks really skinny when they cut to head/neck shot ,his shoulders looked narrow.

That clip was really long and drawn out and kinda boring to watch.

NWO was my favorite era and stable in wrestling history.  I especially liked the early day.  Towards the end with the white and red...not so much.  :(

Actually, I think the nWo kept the WCW alive for a couple more years.  I seem to recall that at one point before the nWo, the Monday night show, for about four weeks in a row, had the same lame "main event"  tag team match: Glacier and Ernest "The Cat" Miller vs. Wrath and Mortus (managed by James Vandenburg).  Not to mention matches featuring "Das Wunkerkind" Alex Wright and Disco Inferno (wtf??)...

The nWo angle was great at the beginning.  I thought when hogan joined it would be even better, but imo it was the wrong direction.  I was looking forward to his no-wrestling ass having to finally job to somebody, but he never did.  He continued to "hulk up" as a heel, which was awful.  For an angle to really work in my mind, it needs a "blow off" where the bad guys finally get what's coming to them.  The nWo, just beat down, spray painted, mocked, etc... every face in the company at the time and NEVER got what they deserved, so to speak.  Of course by the end a 5yr old could have done a better job running the WCW than the idiots in charge...Russo and his clowns.

they got what was coming to them several times, sting and goldberg for example

russo came into the company when it was already too late, he should not be blamed for anything

VERY few times....for the havoc they caused.  The threat of Sting was there, but he didn't really do much.  Goldberg even had to job on the whole "stun gun" angle for them.

Russo was just the final nail, but his ideas were SOOOO bad that they deserve all ridicule.

sting beat hogan at starrcade and super brawl main events, which would be like the top good guy beating the wwe's top bad guy at wrestlemania and summerslam

and even if the nwo got the upper hand more often, it was because the nwo made the wcw popular, wcw dominated the ratings war when the nwo was on top

if russo wasn't the final nail it would've been somebody else, it was a sinking ship

don't forget russo elevated guys like booker t, jeff jarrett, and scott steiner

before that it was the same guys like hogan and flair that wcw fans were tired of seeing

That's the one... He was a terrible wrestler, still is... but he's got fantastic mic skills... DX was a direct result of the NWO success... The NWO started and became the bad guys everyone loved and DX saw it and went right with it... Total ripoff...

Billy Guns has never been as successful as he was with Road Dogg.
