Yes, the US and England would protect them.

i'm all for ISR doing what they need to do.
however, i do worry about gas prices should iran mine those waters :(
-
No, no and thrice no...I cannot even begin to list the endless problems that would result from that...to be honest i dont want to even think about it.
-
NO. Very bad. It won't stop Iran's nuclear program. It will only make their resolve to use nukes, sponsor terrorism, etc. stronger

Given that last statement why would you start the opening post of your thread with 'discuss'...? clearly there is no discussion to be had if that is how you feel/address anyone who disagrees with you.

I do realise how dangerous Iran is...I also know that the internal dynamics of Iran, particularly the demographic power of the more pro western youth (under 25's constitute some 30% of the country) mean that there's a big opening for internal change. As I read recently there is a race between the demographic clock and the nuclear clock, which one will win it as yet uncertain, but in five years the Iranian society will be very different from the one we see today.
The regime (like any autocratic regime) wants to remain in power, there have been many reports that those high up (including Khameni) have become increasingly concerned with Ahmadinejad's behaviour and are looking around for a replacment, notice how Rafsanjani is suddenly being given more air time (a possible more moderate succesor being lined up) Ahmadinejad pissing too many people off is making those up high very nervous, given their desire to stay in power it is a high possibility that if he goes too far Ahmadinejad will be removed and replaced by a more diplomatically minded replacement.
The balance of the middle east is so fragile right now, it seems pretty clear to me that most of the Arab countries are with the West on getting tough on Iran. The second Israel goes in for military strikes that support will evaporate, forget any type of cooperation with the USA for the next Decade. Israel will more than likely lose her alliances with Jordan and Egypt, and I would be very suprised if King Abdullah II could remain in power in Jordan if he maintained a pro western position. That would be a massive loss for us, considering the job in Iraq is not yet done. As for Afghanistan (though i dont know so much about the situation there), one of the Taliban's biggest enemy's is Iran, any chance of cooperation on that front/playing them off against each other will be gone. I doubt the US could hold onto Afghanistan after that, the Pashtun's already fucking hate you, the Hazara's would follow suit and ofcourse the Persian speaking majority Tajiks would leave you as well...I wont garuntee it but I would think that Turkey would also significantly change it's stance toward the US, you have bases there you could well lose them. Not only that you would lose any foothold in the mostly muslim caucaus massively damaging the current strategy against Russia, your only allies left would be Georgia and Armenia.
On top of that, it is well known that Iran estabilished various sleeper cells in Europe, in 2007 a large cell was caught in Germany, though I havent been in Europe for a while last I heard there was still significant Iranian activity going on, any attack would mean a lot of dead Europeans. Then there's Hezbollah, fully reloaded and ready to go again, expect a war with Lebanon and even more destabilisation internally. Syria, which has shown some interest in reaching an agreement with Israel (this is key to Israel's strategy by the way, of creating a geographical buffer zone from Iraq and Iran) would instantly turn back to its old ways and no doubt would become a dangerous enemy (once again)...No doubt the Palestinians would launch another intifada, Hamas would get so much popular support it would be frightening, Abbas would be gone (his power is so flimsy anyway)...there would be no one left to talk to, it would only be endless war as opossed to the current simmering tension that is to a large extent manageable.
Then there's Russia and China. (its late and i cant be arsed to write anymore)
There are clear signs now that the sanctions are going to be seriously ratcheted up if the Iranians dont start playing ball, they could break the country in half if made as severe as some are talking. I think you'll find the tough guys in Iran start talking once their country starts to fall apart around them. It may come to the point where military action has to be taken, but the time is not now, and a serious diplomatic effort would be needed to get people on side, which I really dont think would happen unless the US whore's itself out by offering enormous sums of money to governments in the region to keep them placid.
I think we'd be very lucky if there wasn't WWIII following a Nuke strike on Iran. Believe me many conservatives think this way, not just liberals. To put it simply, Iran can be won over, the ingredients are there...any strike will unite pro-westerners behind the regime, then any chance to secure a democratic Iran will be gone.

Israel will probably attack them within 5 years.

Israel will probably attack them within 5 years.
And the US will be blamed for it...
-
And the US will be blamed for it...
We sold them the planes.
The US is just to overextended for another attack. Israel will do to Iran's centrifuge/reactors what they did to Iraq's in the mid 80s. Everyone still believes Israel attacking Iraq delayed us from having to take military action over there about 10 years.
-
And the US will be blamed for it...
I blame the jews.

Not only that, they will have to fly over (American) Iraqi airspace...hence the strong link.

I blame the Mexicans.

Iran will not lift one finger against ISrael with their nukes.
It will become a parking lot.

they have vowed to mine the waters.
that alone would stop roughly half of the world's oil from getting out that door for 1-3 months.
that is what worries me. I could care less if they choose to bomb iran. But it would significantly affect us here in the USA.
-
I thought the US doesn't get it's oil from the middle east?

They are not going to do that. This is all saber rattling right now.

We could take over Mexican oil! 8)

I disagree...I think they really want to go and are trying to find a way to do it. This would not be the problem it is, if it were'nt for the appeaser in chief. I bet Barry can't wait to get his own Members Only Jacket. I don't think, in the end that Israel will bomb.
-

They're not going to do anything because there's nothing to do that doesn't end in the destabilization of the region. There is nothing they can do to stop Iran. Iran will have nukes at some point. Unless, they just don't give a shit and want to try and invade Iran.
-
They're not invading...but what they want to do is compltely neuter the country. A nuclear Iran will do far more to distabilize the region then bombing Iran. Sure, in the short term u would have alot of pissed off arabs from the "arab street" but a strike by Israel will make many governments secretly very happy. There won't be a regional arms nuclear arms race, if Iran stops or is stopped. Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and some of the smaller countries want no part of Iran and their BS.

I blame the Mexicans.
And I blame the Mexican Jews.

Do you really think commandos wouldn't be all over those waters waiting for them to try to mine it?
And I blame the Mexican Jews.
It's funny that you say you're not racist. Just a walking contradiction.
Don't "kung-fu" me!!!!!

They cant neuter the country enough to stop them from making a nuke one way or another. I just don't see how.
-
I ment that unlike their attack against Iraq in the 80's, which destroyed just the site of the plant, the IDF wants to destroy much of the Iranian military. They want to do what we did to Saddam in 1991, when we decapitated his military in one night. They have the pilots and aircraft to do it, but they need overflight, air traffic control support and then resupply from the US. Since Barry won't go for that, they're stuck.

Israel doesn't have enough KC-10's?
And what will it accomplish? Nothing. it won't stop Iran from doing anything. They may cause damage, but Iran's Air Force is not going to fly up to Challenge the Israelis. The Iranian troops are dug in defensive positions like in Kuwait. Israel is not going to go after power plants, dams, irrigation and such. All an attack will do is make Israel look like war mongers and it will play right into Iranian's hands politically in the eyes of the world. In the meantime hatred for Israel will get even worse.
But you are right, I don't see Barry going for that. I don't even see Bush going for that.
And in the end Iran will still have nukes.
-
Doesn't modst of the middle east hate the Iranians... with them being Persian and all. Didn't Iran fuck with virtually all their neighbors in recent history? Why aren't middle eastern countries stepping up to curb Persia?
-
They are not going to do that. This is all saber rattling right now.

Israel was right to go in...I have spoken to many Palestinians and they have all told me that Hamas could have stopped the rocket fire if it had wanted...having said that, the composition of the Israeli military is not nowadays what I would call an accountable democratic instituition. many right wing extremists are now in positions of influence in the israeli army, things happen that are not acceptable by democratic standards, and I would say the Israeli has slipped in its moral position. I could really go on and on about gaza, but to cut it short, Israel should defend itself, but it really needs to have a long look at the way it behaves in war if it wants to be considered an enlightened western democracy

This is an intelligent answer. I thought dropping white phosporus on children and incinerating them was...babaric to say the least. You can't kill civilians just because it is convenient; I basically agree with you.
