Title: Substitute for cottage cheese at bed-time
Post by: stick_nasty on July 21, 2009, 09:12:24 AM
I've read a lot that cottage cheese is a good bed-time meal.  I can't stand the stuff and I have been mixing it with yogurt to mask the taste (doesn't always work).  Any suggestions for a another bed-time meal?  Thanks.

Mixing it with some milk & chocolate powder (or syrup) makes it pretty easy to consume.  I prefer a hand blender and a milkshake cup to save washing a blender jug.

Edit: Nothing magical about cottage cheese tho.  Any moderate carb protein rich food will do you fine.  Eat what you enjoy.

Try some Greek yogurt ~ very high in protein; low in carbs.

Cottage cheese is nice at bedtime because it absorbs slowly.
You may also consider picking up a decent casein powder and consume a shake before bed – casein absorbs very slowly.

You can also slow down the absorption rate of any protein by consuming it with a tablespoon of olive (or any kind of healthy) oil. Fats have that effect.

what about a soy protein shake before bed? isn't soy a slow release protein as well?

greek yogurt is good stuff, but expensive as hell like almost 3.00 dollars for 1 small container!

I'd avoid soy on a regular basis because of it's estrogenic properties.

Yes it is expensive, but you're paying for the protein.  A regular cup of yogurt is ~.75-.99~ with about 6-8 grams of protein and A LOT of carbs, whereas Greek yogurt has about 23 grams of protein and about 9 carbs.  I pay about 1.79 for a 6 ounce cup or 7.59 for a 32 ounce tub.  Trader Joes has the best price @ 2.99 for 16 ounces.
Oh, and it tastes sooooo much better  ;D
