Do you ever rent out your vacation home to short or long term tenants? Are they tenants you know? Friends? Family? Strangers? My friend says I should rent out my vacation home, but I don’t want to do it. I don’t want the hassle of being a landlord or having tenants who may not share my living standards; I like things kept very tidy. Originally the idea behind this home was to have my own place to stay when I am in town without crashing with friends or family and to share it with my in-laws or my brother and his family when they are in town; conversely, I get to use my brother’s place in Hawaii, but the truth is I almost never use it. I do end up staying with family when I am in town and the house sits empty.
Getting a rent check every month would let me upgrade to an even sportier car (S Line anyone?). 8)
I think I’m gonna try renting for a year. Any tenant horror stories I should hear about? :-\

I think Hereford has some tenant horror stories.
Personally I wouldn't rent it. Many people can be destructive slobs and don't care about your property. And how would you know who they are for sure? I vouched for a relative to a landlord I know and her kids or boyfriend or maybe even she put holes in the walls, stained the carpet etc. :-\
Plus would you leave your furniture there? Who knows what kind of "stuff" they could leave on it :P What if someone got hurt? Don't do it!!
Unless you want to, I'm sure it would be fine :)
j/k I wouldn't do it.

My father lives in CT but owns a condo in Myrtle Beach SC.he uses an agency to handle all the bookings and it works well for him.cleaners come once a week and all minor repairs are taken care f.

I would rent it without furniture.
Obviously, I would try to screen the tenants via family members who live locally. I would request a credit report from any prospective tenant. Years ago a friend of mine who is a landlord told me something that initially seemed silly, but has proven to be true. He said before he responded or rented to any applicant he would walk them out to their car as they left. He did this in order to “inspect” their car’s interior. He said, the way someone keeps the interior of their car is the same way they will keep the interior of the house they live in.
Again, when he first said this I thought it was silly, but over the years, I have conducted this same experiment and 95% of the time it has proven to be true. People who keep a clean car interior also keep a clean house. People who keep a messy or junky car interior live the same way at home.
btw, why did you vouch for your relative? On what basis? Would you vouch for them again? ???

I thought I "knew" her. :-\
No, I would never vouch for her again.
-
Hmm, interesting. And scary! I am glad to hear that you would not vouch for her again. I wonder what her credit score is… or that of her boyfriend. I would only rent to someone with a good credit score and someone my local relative interviewed and approved of.

Is it in a touristy area? Could it be a vacation rental? As Calvin mentioned, you could use an agency. If it's in a desirable area, it shouldn't be that difficult to find a like minded, mature individual/couple (no kids) looking to relocate or something. Maybe check with a relocation company.
I have a friend with several rental properties, but they're not very nice and hence he doesn't have the greatest tenants. My mom owns the house next to hers and she rents that out (in Cali). Never seems to have a problem. They're very respectful.
What about corporate housing? A very large company in my area rents a house nearby for their out of town/country guests who are on extended stays. Works out well since there's very limited hotel choices.
I used to work with a woman whose office was a complete disaster. She knew where everything was, but she just seemed like a slob. I wonder if her house was like that.

All good thoughts. Thanks for sharing. Yes, this is a touristy area, but I am disinclined to use an agency because I want to be more picky than an agency might be. For example: no kids and no pets! ;)

I've rented vacation homes/condos before and it's usually through an agency, but I've also dealt with the owner. The contracts are very clear and specific re: the rules. The owners have a cleaning service come in afterwards. When someone is going that route, I would think they're of a mature mindset and wouldn't trash the place.
When I was first out of high school, I rented a house that was up for sale - the owners were relocated and I had gone to school with their kids so I sort of knew them. I was an excellent renter but... what the hell were they thinking ::) renting to an 18 year old. :o ???
We have friends who own cabins on a lake and they rent them out by the week - they're nothing special - very rustic and not at all updated. Families rent in the summer and guys rent during hunting and snowmobiling season. They're at full occupancy at least 40 weeks out of the year and get $700-$800 week. Good $ka-ching$
Check out some vacation rentals and inquire as if you're a potential renter or just be upfront and ask the owner how it's working for them. :-\
If you approach it with a business mindset, you could make some serious cash and maybe even get the car AND the pillows ;D

I usually on ly let freinds and family use the place. The last few years though we rented it out. We used a guy in Madrid to be the property manager

I work on base during the week but I have a condo in the city I go to on weekends and holidays
renting two of the three rooms to people I've known since kindergarten and things are going well
I just wouldn't trust some douchebag students or people I hadn't known previously
