Title: Galactose... functions similar to glucose, or more like fructose? (muscle/liver)
Post by: tbombz on October 12, 2009, 11:01:22 PM
anyone have some info on galactose metabolism?

im not 100% sure on this. it may be converted to glucose in the liver, or it may be like fructose in of that it only has liver capacity and doesnt effect insulin or skeletal glycogen.

I could be wrong but isn't Galactose one molecule of fructose & glucose? So I would imagine that it would have to properties of both when broken down (note: I'm completely guessing right after reading the post & haven't done any research).

your thinking of sucrose.

what exactly are you looking for?

glucose and galactose can be used interchangebly via uridyl transferase. It is not a big topic in biochem, i mean galactokinase deficiency comes up in pathology but other then that no.

it is usually combined with glucose inside the mammary glands, it does not function like fructose, which can also be made from glucose-sorbitol-fructose, if im not mistaken. Haven't read this shit in a while.

im pretty sure you answered it. you said glucose and galactose are interchangeable. and the same cannot be said for glucose and fructose.

glucose can be made into fructose, but fructose is required, yes.

the glucose and galactose statement is spot on

good look finding galactose by itself

I stumbled across this.  Thought it might be of interest.

now that is exactly what i was looking for.

thanks princess.

however, while it is very clear that glucose is used by all the organs, liver muscle and brain. and fuctose is only used by liver. it is not very clear as to whether galactose will have an effect similar to fructose, or similar to that of glucose.

i just want to know if drinking skim milk, or eating skim milk based foods (for example fat free ice cream)..is okay.

Wouldn't you be more interested in lactose metabolism then?

I have found that FAT FREE ice creams replace the fat with mystery ingredients and sugar alcohols  :-X

dude im drunk as all hell right now but what effect are you talking about that is different in glucose and fructose, the different glut transporter or the site of utilization, ie liver vs muscle glycogen.

galactose will act as a substrate for glucose, and a combined in mammary tissue to form lactose.

i already said this, but yes you will be fine if you drink it, if you dont your body can synthesize it just like fructose, albeit a different pathway.

make your question more specific and i might be able to help, is it ok in regards to what?

fructose isnt good because your body can only use it in liver, unlike glucose which yoru body can use in muscle liver and brain.

can yoru body use galactose in muscle brain and liver?
