Im planning on moving and was thinking texas. Many reasons. Can anyone tell me if this is the spot? Im close to 30 yrs old, so Austin seems a bit youngish for me. I want someplace nice with a good local economy, hot single females and a nice nightlife. Nothing too crazy, but not someplace boring either. I live on the west coast so im used to being close to the ocean and yes that does matter.

This is a question more suited for Aaron Singerman and or The Great G o a t b o y.

i have lived in the area since i was born. Houston has something for everyone. Austin sucks balls, san marcos(TX) is better.
i really like to go to rice village on Friday with three good friends and make our rounds bar to bar. its really more of a college crowd, but who doesn't love fucking college girls.
if you want to go cougar hunting check out wild wild west on the Richmond strip....it is very close to "the gentleman's club".
let me know if you move down.

the west coast to texas...pretty much the opposite of what i want to do lol.
things you will find here that never even crossed your mind on the west coast:
1.HORRIBLE weather. 8 month summers, super hot, humid as fuck, even all night. forget about opening your windows at night(or ever). prepare for ridiculous heat day and night, sweat like you wouldnt believe in all sorts of day to day situations. unlike west coast you will not want to go outside, ever. wont want to get a table outside, wont want to walk from the parking lot to your car(much less get in your ovencar), wont want to go outside for anything really, ever. about 30 days a year total of good, west coast weather. 30.
2. mosquitos. flying insects , by the cloudfulls that are immediately drawn to humans and will suck your blood, and leave itchy welts all over your exposed skin. there is no escape, and nothing you can do to prevent it. about 8 months of year, if you are outside for more than a few minutes you will be bitten by mosquitos.
3. allergies. ive spoken to MANY people from the west coast, didnt even know what allergies were till they got to texas. expect for shitload more sneezing, runny/stuff nose, itchy puffy eyes, etc. central texas is known as a 'perfect storm' place for allergies, houston isnt much better.
4.heres the ONE good thing about texas. its (relatively) cheap. you will get more space and bigger housing for your money, and parking is generally easy anywhere. why is it so cheap? for one, it is a huge state with lots of space. but also because there are so many more desirable places to live...see the reasons above.i find that although you get more house for your money, your not really 'happier' because of the climate, insects, allergies, generally mundane landscapes and the cities are 90% sprawling, unaesthetic and pretty much not too pretty in general, in stark contrast to 90% of the west coast.
if i were you unless you have some strong reason to come here, id DEFINITELY recommend staying on the west coat.

monica brant lives in lakeway on the west end of austin. this is near lake travis. the area is beautiful. close to city center yet laid back and open. the lake goes on for miles and there are golf courses, restaurants and homes all along it. if i moved to texas this would be the area.
-
exactly hazbin, the lake areas of austin are probably the only really good parts of texas.

Eat Shit.. Houston is the bomb.... I've lived here since 97.... Good place to live... meet a chick, settle down here. Austin is too liberal, San Antonio has too many mexicans... Dallas is ok, but the economy is better in Houston than anywhere else in Tx...

She might have been from Houston.

dallas is much nicer

Houston was named fattest city in the nation 3 years in a row..

Ive lived in Houston my whole life and its a great place, night life is always bumping from trendy bars and clubs to local dive bars. Ive never had a complaint about the ladies and like I said there are plenty of bars and clubs depending on your taste. Plenty of shit to do from Pro sports to outdoor activities to the fuking BBQ's you probably havent experienced BBQ till you come to Texas good food and good ppl for the most part.
Now matrix is right about the weather, its humid as ish down here the majority of the year and it gets damn hot and can stay that way for months. Other then that im going to have to call matrix a little bitch ;D the mosquitos arent any worse then other places really but they can bad.
You might miss the beaches the only thing we have close is galveston and ahhh you can even see your feet standing in 2 feet of water. I dont really call that a beach but its fun to go hang out and bbq and drink with some friends.
Look up mid town, rice village, washington avenue, downtown and houston night life to get an idea of the night life.
feel free to pm me if you have any other questions

Dallas is shitty, horrible freeway system, not shit to do, higher cost of living, etc...I guess it depends on who you are but imho dallas isnt even a nice place to visit.

pretty insightful comment on Corpus Christi, TX.
Thanks HTexan.

It depends what kind of chicks you like. But Austin has the hotest chicks. Been that many movies companies work there. It is a second holleywood. Plus it has tons of college chicks. It's like your dicks version of heaven.

Dang some mixed feelings here. Some reasons I want to move-
Guns. I dislike californias attempt to deprive me of my right to own firearms. I want guns period. You can not tell me what I can or cannot have nor can you convince me that 10 bullets are less lethal than 30.
Conservative lifestyle- I am not uppity nor a Bible thumper but I refuse to accept certain lifestyles because they are "popular" in todays culture. I am sorry but I have MORALS. Also I dislike Obama and going to college here MY GOD even my fucking professors have told us they voted for him and hope we did! I am sorry but he is SHIT as president and if you can't see that then fuck you. Quit blindly following a liberal politician like a fucking lemming.
Women- Cali women are nothing special and the guy to girl ratio in the bay area is HORRIBLE. It's so bad your very barely average looking girls (5-6 out of 10) get to act like they are the shit because they are constantly being chased by guys. It's pretty bad. I almost never meet single girls without children over the age of 20- most are married by that age or somthing is REALLY wrong with them. Like being fat.
Views on the military- i am very pro military and I get sick of living here. I swear most californians would happily dismantle the entire military and just beg other countries not to attack us which of course would suck because we also would have no guns of our own lol. It really boggles the mind.
Astronomical housing- you would think I am used to paying 1200-1400 per month for a tiny hovel downtown with a view of a parking garage but I have not. I hate it here.
No jobs. At all. Unless you have at least a 4 year degree and even then it's tough. Really tough. So you would think housing prices are much lower- NOPE! So we are stuck with thousands of out of work people who line up to get 12 dollar an hour jobs whilst their 4 year degree sits and collects dust. No thanks.
I hate it here. Is Texas the answer?

houston is getting hit right now too bro its better then alot of other places but if you dont have experience in a certain field you will be looking for a job for a while unless you want to settle.
Rent can range bro, if you want to live in a nice apt in downtown, mid town, rice village, heights, galleria area your going to pay a good amount. Good thing about Houston though is it is spread out and those same apts in town are probably 400-600 dollars cheaper in the suburbs of houston.
Theres plenty of women down here but at times the hip places can be cock fests but great thing is there are plenty of places to go around here so you can just pick up and head somewhere else.
other then that sounds like you would like it here like i said biggest thing you may not like is the weather.
-
I lived in Vegas for a year, then Los Angeles (Mid-city West) for a little over year...then I moved back to Austin, TX about a year ago.
I now own a 2100 sq ft house on a .25 acre lot; I was paying $1800 for a crappy two bedroom in Los Angeles.
Guess what? I'd still rather live in So Cal. Texas is where So Cal'ers go to quit/retire/die.
I'm sorry, but you can't even compare the two. Compared to the rest of Texas, Austin is an oasis in the desert. Compared to the CA coast, it's jack-mutha-fuckin' shit.

I've spent many many weeks in Houston area, and all of what you speak is true.
I've always said "There is nothing on earth like a Texas Female!" Many reasons why! ;)
And for food? All I have to say is "Montgomery Country BBQ Cook-off!" Damn, from the private booths, the girls walking around nearly naked, the food, or just the hospitality....:o :o :o

Guns. I dislike californias attempt to deprive me of my right to own firearms. I want guns period. You can not tell me what I can or cannot have nor can you convince me that 10 bullets are less lethal than 30.
Dude, you can still buy a handgun in CA much easier than you can in TX.

CA is not as liberal is perceived by the rest of the country; much of CA outside of the Bay Area and So Cal is very conservative. Why do you think Prop 8 never passes in CA?
Women- Cali women are nothing special and the guy to girl ratio in the bay area is HORRIBLE. You want to find single, hot women? MOVE TO NEW YORK CITY OR GET SOME GAME WHERE YOU LIVE. Your problem is not lack of women, its a lack of pull w/the opposite sex.
Views on the military- i am very pro military and I get sick of living here. I swear most californians would happily dismantle the entire military and just beg other countries not to attack us which of course would suck because we also would have no guns of our own lol. It really boggles the mind.
Once again, why do you give a FUCK?
Astronomical housing- you would think I am used to paying 1200-1400 per month for a tiny hovel downtown with a view of a parking garage but I have not. I hate it here.
Who cares about how big of a house you have when you spend all of your time indoors because the weather sucks?
No jobs. At all. Unless you have at least a 4 year degree and even then it's tough. Really tough. So you would think housing prices are much lower- NOPE! Sorry you didn't take the time or make the effort to get the obligatory 4 year degree.
I hate it here. Is Texas the answer?
I think YOU are the problem, not any particular place you are living. Believe me, there's nowhere close to a bounty of jobs here in TX. Austin is doing better than most of the country, but it's very hard to find a job anywhere right now if you aren't qualified and aggressive.
-
pretty insightful comment on Corpus Christi, TX.
Thanks HTexan.
LOL. Just talked to a buddy selling construction materials - he said Corpus is shrinking. Apparently, no one wants to live in a barren wasteland in muggy South Texas. Who woulda figured?
-
Houston, San Marcos, Katy are all cool spots....I have friends that live in The Woodlands and we go down there all the time, float the guadalupe drive to Austin...goodtimes...
Dallas is nice too (although it has the worst "bad area" of any texas city), I have friends that live in both the downtown area and just outside, closer to Plano...
-
I am still in college. I go full time (14 units now, 20 in the spring). If you really think only the bay area is liberal THINK AGAIN. Also prop 8 did not pass because we are not morons, we can certainly understand that there is NO reason to re-define what is effectively A RELIGOUS CEREMONY just because some fucks who usually are NOT religous want it that way. Screw that.
Not that I do not have game- there really are not that many single girls. Any chick that is has at least 3-4 guys workin on her or she is undersireable. You would not understand if you didn't live here.
Id like to also touch on the materialism of people (specially women) here. You are judged so much and so fast it's really sickening.
I heard the job market out there was a lot better? Maybe Austin or Dallas is a better bet? I'm really not sure. Perhaps I should look at another state?

Maybe you should check out NC.
We have beaches and mountains.
VERY pro gun and pro military.
Conservative, except for a couple of pockets in Raleigh and Charlotte.
Job situation is ok, MUCH better than Cali, but probably not as good as Houston or Austin.
Real estate is much more affordable than Cali.
Great colleges too, if you wanted to go on to graduate school or something.
Humid in the summer, but not nearly as hot as Texas.
Good hunting, fishing, golf, camping, backpacking, etc.... if you like outdoor stuff.
I was born in NC, but lived/moved all over the US and chose to move back.

guns are easy as fuck in texas, hanguns too, i can go 5 mins down the street to the store and walk out 20 minutes later with any handgun i want and a bag full of ammunition. its almost funny.
and if your a conservative right wing piece of shit like you sound methyl mike, then you will feel at home at texas as it is filled with bible thumping, backwards-thinking hatefilled simpletons. stay away from austin though as it is a liberal city. and be warned, houston has tons of mexicans and tons of blacks.
-
I will be moving in May 2010 and Houston might be on the list. Not too crazy about the large black population though- thats the reason I am moving in the first place lol.
-
in all honesty, yes there are lots of black people but its just like any other big city in that there are parts that will be almost exclusively white, and parts that are almost all black. texas cities are very, very open and spread out, so all you have to do is avoid those areas, its not like everyone is all on top of each other. nothing at all like the big northeastern cities.

I just went to my ranch with 3 handguns, and a rifle for some target practice with my dad yesterday. On the drive in and out, i saw 3 bucks, 5 doe, 3 rabbits, a maybe a rattle snake. We have a buck over pop problem. My cus is already getting his blind ready for the hunting season.
Poor little guys.
I don't like deer meat. But, don't get my wrong, if the store stopped selling beef. I would be the first one in line to "hunt" a cow. LOL

this is very true especially in houston, blacks seem to congregate in certain areas of Houston same with mexicans etc...
ever hear the term white flight? this happens in houston white are in the process of moving back in town my cousin and his wife live in the heights which is a mix right now of poor as shit ppl and fairly well off ppl.

Texas is full of nothing but steers and queers.
-
I lived there (houston) for 4 years and have no desire to go back.
Housing is affordable but cheap construction unless you live in 350k and up. Most homes are on top of each other and no basements due to soil issues. Mostly slab homes.
Night life is good if your a kicker or rocker. chicks are hot and the accent is cool.
Houston is not a pretty place. Its hot as hell and very humid. You will sweat your ass of in summer and the bugs are huge and plentiful.
Crime is an issue. High crime rates and apartment living just makes the crime issue worse.
If I had a choice to go back I would say no. Look elsewhere.
Just my opinion. do your home work. Maybe go there for 10 days to vacation and check out all the suburbs. I lived in sugerland before it exploded with homes. Traffic sucks. Your car better have good a/c or your screwed.
Good luck.

Do they really make everything big in Texas, such as yourself, MOS?

-
Do they really make everything big in Texas, such as yourself, MOS?
MOS is just mad just he was born without balls. poor guy. :(
-
Now really are the bugs/heat really as bad as people say?
yes, absolutely. think of it this way-people assume desert cities like phoenix are hotter cause the highs get over 100 every day...but its super dry heat (yes it really makes a difference), so in the shade it is not too bad at all, as soon as the sun goes down its cool, you can open windows, etc...meanwhile in humid hot cities like houston it FEELS much hotter, you sweat far quicker and far more, the shade does not help at all, you can feel the moisture even indoors, when you get out of the shower you stay wet, you sure as hell do not open any windows at night as it stays sticky humid all night, etc..and yes the mosquitos ARE that bad. id take a phoenix 110 over a texas 98 ANY DAY.
but hey, housing is cheaper. its just not a pleasant environment for human habitation.
-
Now really are the bugs/heat really as bad as people say?
LOL bro there are days when leave my place and before i get to my car in the driveway im starting to sweat...
It doesnt get much hotter then alot of other places but its the humidity that gets you. The bugs arent that bad but I agree the mosquitoes can be a pain but you can avoid them.
I agree with the phoenix comment and the weather
-
Now really are the bugs/heat really as bad as people say?
Heat? yes
Bugs? depends on the bugs, but for the most part, yes.

yes, absolutely. think of it this way-people assume desert cities like phoenix are hotter cause the highs get over 100 every day...but its super dry heat (yes it really makes a difference), so in the shade it is not too bad at all, as soon as the sun goes down its cool, you can open windows, etc...meanwhile in humid hot cities like houston it FEELS much hotter, you sweat far quicker and far more, the shade does not help at all, you can feel the moisture even indoors, when you get out of the shower you stay wet, you sure as hell do not open any windows at night as it stays sticky humid all night, etc..and yes the mosquitos ARE that bad. id take a phoenix 110 over a texas 98 ANY DAY.
but hey, housing is cheaper. its just not a pleasant environment for human habitation.
sounds like florida :(
