Title: 'Avatar' Posts Biggest-Ever Non-summer Monday/Tuesday With Total Of $ 32 Million
Post by: Bodybuilding Related on December 24, 2009, 09:25:59 AM
Any worries about "Avatar" after it got off to less than a phenomenal start this past weekend have been erased.

20th Century Fox's costly 3D tentpole movie sold $16.4 million worth of tickets on Monday and $16 million on Tuesday in the U.S. and Canada, according to the studio. That's the highest-ever domestic gross on either day for a film playing outside of summer.

Including flicks that opened in summer, traditionally the strongest time of the year for moviegoing, "Avatar" had the third-biggest non-holiday Monday (excluding Memorial Day and July 4th weekends) ever and the third-biggest Tuesday ever.

Huge weekday ticket sales for "Avatar" are yet another sign, along with its higher-than-predicted Sunday, that word-of-mouth for the movie is fantastic and spreading fast.

According to people who have seen audience polling, "Avatar" will probably decline very modestly, if at all, this coming weekend compared with its $77-million debut. Combined with the $109.5 million it has grossed so far, it will probably be close to and possibly over $200 million by Sunday and on its way to an ultimate domestic gross of at least $350 million.

Combined with even bigger grosses from foreign countries, including a debut in Japan today that is expected to be very strong, a final worldwide total of more than $1 billion is looking more and more likely for "Avatar."

The $430 million that Fox, along with Dune Entertainment and Ingenious Partners, spent to produce and sell the movie is looking like a better investment every day.

Who's seen this movie yet?  What did you think?  I don't think I've heard a bad word about it yet so I'm hoping at least Uberman09 could chime in.   ;D

He deserves it. Not sure if he's the one doing the next movie in the Alien franchise, but it would be great if he did.

"I'm talking about him drowning in the ocean, of course."

I remember being a stupid 20 year old, seeing Titanic in a movie theater with a girl (yes
homo)

My brother and his GF were there.  Right when Leo's character Jack froze and sank into the sea, my brother quipped "hu hu huhh... Jack Frost..." way too loud in the theater.  A bunch of people in tears were all like "You asshole, WTF is wrong with you.."

They were emotionally involved with a movie character.  gayer than pink popcorn.

It's not definite and apparently, it might be Ridley Scott doing it. They are considering doing a prequel to the first movie (Alien), which in the movies' timeline would place it somewhere between AVP II and Alien.

And LOL @ Jack Frost ;D

The 3D was great but you going used to it after the first hours.

The story line was way too predictable. All show. Little go.

Hardly fantastic. It was okay...the storyline, the characters, everything about it, is fucking played out. I wouldn't have bothered to see the damned thing (at the theater), but my buddies treated me. I would not have spent a dime on it, my self.

For those saying it was "shit" let me just ask you why you go to see a movie to begin with?  Check your fucking brain at the door next time you're going to see a movie about blue aliens in a fantastical world.  You might have a better time.  I do agree the story was rather lame and the characters were quite forgettable, but the world and action going on it, especially the battle at the end are all worth it.

ROFL!  ;D

This is classic McFarland humour here!!  He posts this knowing that very few people on the board will get it, but those who do will really appreciate it.

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/willheaven/100020488/james-camerons-avatar-is-a-stylish-film-marred-by-its-racist-subtext

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/willheaven/100020706/avatar-james-cameron-deserves-the-worst-lefty-award-2009

The movie avatar is supposed to be a metaphor for the evil white man invading the nobler put upon race [the blue aliens or "Na'vi"] depicting white imperialistic greed versus the supposed peace in tranquility of other more tribal races.  Of course in reality, tribal races didn't live in a world free of technology because they were intentionally setting out to save the environment or anything like that.  ::)  They simply lacked the intellectual capability of producing the technology in the first place.  Leave it to the media to turn a VICE into a VIRTUE and use it to slander all white people for their crimes against humanity while ignoring similar crimes by all other peoples of man.

McFarland - knowing this motive behind the movie and knowing that Uberman09 is against globalization/multiculturalism, knows he will not like the movie which is why he asked him to offer his opinion.

Great stuff!!!  McFarland really "knows the score" so to speak.

And yet you want us to pretend it's better than it is, when even YOU who claims to have worked on it, is knocking it?

Like I said, it was okay. The story is one we've seen 100 times. You really want me to break it down, I suppose I can (from what I remember) if anyone cares. Some nice visuals, but that's about it.

The problem with this type of movie is, they NEVER like up to the hype. This is why I usually skip this sort of movie. They rely on hype to sell it, rather than actually making an effort to put a good storyline together, along with great special effects.

Sorry, But I am not 12 anymore. This type of movie, is the equivalent of jacking off to the Victoria's Secret Catalog (just because it is VS catalog and the hype that goes with it, even though NO ONE is nude), when I could jacking off to some nasty porn on the web.

EDIT: BTW, didn't this fucking movie cost an obscene amount of money to make?

Yea you've said what everyone else who has anything negative to say about it has already said, weak story and so so characters which are true.  If you can get past that and just turn your brain off and enjoy the ride then it can be a fun movie to check out.

Yea, the cost of the movie including marketing was close to $500 million.

We say those things cause they are true. I'm not knocking the movie, for the sake of doing so. Just my honest opinion. I'm not the type of person who'll applaud something, just cause everyone else is.

And please, I don't go to the movies to turn off my brain, I go to be entertained. If I wanted to turn off my brain, I'd watch reality TV.
You remind me of a buddy of mine, who says things like you. He hates movies with plots, and loves these hype fests, which cater to the mindless drones.

Considering the average Movie ticket (in my area) is about $10, and then you add $5 for watered down soda (and whatever else I get that day), I think I have a right to express my opinion.

BTW, Emmortal, what did you do in this movie?

Also, half a billion for a movie is fucking insane. Can't help but wonder what good things could be accomplished with that kind of money. We've got kids and elderly, with no health care, some who are starving. Some homeless......but there's money to blow on an over hyped shit fest. What a wonderful fucking world.

I watched it today with my 7 year old - apart from the 3 times he needed to pee, the movie was awesome in 3D.

Of course, it's not real. Neither was Star Wars. I did get the horn over the 8 foot tall blue leading lady with her tight body and small perfectly formed titties but I think my son missed that.

The last time I was in awe of special effects was T-2. That time, I didn't think such things were possible and the same happened when I saw Avatar today.

As for the 'unobtanium', I thought it was a good, tongue-in-cheek joke. Then again, I'm English, so irony isn't lost on me  ;)

I can easily say it's one of the BEST movies I have ever seen!!!! It's also sad movie, It shows the best and worst of human race.

Avatar kind of puts spin on Independence day movie. This TIME WE ARE THE BAD ALIENS!

I saw Avatar in 3d. VERY VERY Beautiful movie!

The graphics were very cool but it was essentially 'Dancing with Wolves' in 3D.  It even had the tribal warrior leader "I will fight with you brother" speech before the big battle.
It was also Pocahontas (no homo), The Last Samuria (no homo), Dune (kinda homo), and The Dark Crystal.  A lot of red neck patriots and Fox 'news' were getting all riled up over anti-american storylines...oh well, if you can't take the heat, dont start the wars.
On another note, Cameron ripped his Aliens movie several times including music motifs (very homo that I know what a motif is) during the climatic battle.  Considering what's out there these days and Cameron's obvious talent it's worth the price of a ticket.

I got my ticket bought for me or I never would have gone as these types of movies don't appeal to me. I'm not a big fan of people and cartoons mixing together most of the time as the blue people looked very obviously fake, etc. I don't understand why Lord of the Rings could make a lot of the creatures look real but everyone else computer generates everyone.
However I can see how some people might like that aspect, but besides that the acting was terrible and storyline was "Made for TV" material. A ton of cliches, etc.
