Wow, he really had skinny legs.

Who cares? The guy looked incredable. His legs look better than these bloated little midgets with "huge hams" that you see now in days. Modern bb's look like shit. They are way to big. They look like weebles. It's embarrassing.

-

big legs suck, they rub together and cause chafe
Skinny legs suck they make spandex look like baggies.
-
bodybuilding is an illusion...
he had the right proportions... ala pumping irons
just the right size legs to help make his arms look great...
platz had crazy legs,,, arms were ok (ok meaning not stand out as his legs still had great arms though),,, but if his legs were a bit smaller his arms would have looked a few percent better.

IT has been found that, those who criticize arnie for lack , of leg size , usually belong to the , H.I.T. -ARTHUR JONES camp ; they usually assume , arnie had 19 inch arms , so his legs were small , something arthur jones called indirect effect ....; mike mentzer, sergio , were always said to have better, bigger legs than arnie ....
many believe only H.I.T. - TRAINING CAN ORLY BUILD HUGE LEGS ...
so they assume, arnie, with his high volume training, could not build huge, legs....!!
something that has come, down from arthur jones, bulletin ...
Throw a stone into a pool of water, and it will make a splash and a wave will run to the far end of the pool; the
larger the stone, the larger the splash and the larger the wave. A very similar effect results from any form of
exercise I have named this "indirect effect". When one muscle grows in response to exercise, the entire
muscular structure of the body grows to a lesser degree even muscles that are not being exercised at all;
Until quite recently, this effect was most pronounced as a result of the practice of full squats. It has been
repeatedly demonstrated that the practice of squats as a single exercise will induce large-scale muscular
growth throughout the body; and while nobody yet understands why this happens, there is no slightest doubt
that it does happen.
While such an individual might have 13 inch upper arms at the start
of such a training program, it is almost impossible for his arms to stay that small; by the end of the program, his
arms would probably be at least 15 inches. And in almost all cases, the bulk of this arm-size increase will be in
the form of muscular fiber rather than fatty tissue; the strength of the arms will increase in proportion (but not
in direct proportion) to the size increase in spite of the fact that no exercise is employed for the arms at all
it is difficult to build the size of the arms beyond a certain point, unless the large muscles
of the legs are also being exercised.

Strong as an Oak: an authoritative retrospective of Arnold Schwarzenegger's training programevery bodypart, every exercisefrom the last 35 years of muscle & fitness - BY - Joe Wuebben
------------------------------------------
In his early days, Arnold's leg-training protocol suffered from two critical pitfalls: Disuse and, as Joe Weider called it, primitivism. The former was pretty straightforward--the young Austrian didn't train legs at all his first year of bodybuilding. After finally clueing in to his lower body, he went overboard, even going so far as to train legs every day for a year, doing 10 sets of squats and 10 sets of leg curls each day. Not surprisingly, he wasn't satisfied with the results.
His primitive ways were most reflective in lifting "retreats" that he and his buddies would go on in the Austrian countryside, as described in another Tyler-written story. They'd load up several cars with weights and drive to a remote area in the trees where they could train. They'd squat from morning till afternoon, then rest and drink beer, then go right back to squatting again. That's how they did it--pick an exercise and do it until you can't do it anymore.
When Joe came into the picture, such antiquated training methods went by the wayside, as did the beer-drinking. He felt Arnold's legs had become bulky without enough definition. "[Your legs] suffer by comparison [to your upper body] and it is of the most urgent necessity that you completely alter your leg-training program," Joe told young Arnold. "I rather imagine, too, that others may have noticed this odd effect and are puzzled by it."
Arnold agreed, which produced the type of workout you see here, not to mention wonderfully proportioned legs.
OAK TIPS
* Arnold often split his quad workouts into two sessions, doing his first three thigh exercises in the morning and doing the last one or two in the evening. This assured that every exercise was performed at utmost intensity.
* Despite the intensity of his leg training, Arnold kept his rest periods between sets short, no more than one minute. This created a "flushing" effect, keeping maximum blood in the muscles for the entire session.
* Sometimes he would do leg curls in the middle of his quad workout (after front squats and before leg presses) to give the front of his thighs a short break. Then he'd do more sets of hamstrings at the end of the workout.
EXERCISE SETS REPS
Barbell Squat 5 8
Front Squat 5 8-10
Leg Press 5 10
Leg Extension 5 10
Lying Leg Curl 8 10
* FRONT SQUAT
Arnold liked this movement for building up his lower quads just above the knee to accentuate the "teardrop," aka vastus medialis. He went heavy (no surprise) and took it down very low, thighs well past parallel to the floor. To avoid injury, he always made sure to keep his back straight throughout and warmed up thoroughly beforehand.

When there is photographic evidence of arnie training legs with heavy weights, i cant believe how many anti-arnold ,and H.I.T.GROUPS believe , arnie didn't have huge legs ...!!!

HIGH VOLUME WORKS , SINCE ARNIE PROVES IT.... !
exactly,,, QFT
because if ^^^ hit sh!t was true then everyone would have had a better chest and bis than arnies to compliment they're big legs, (genetics aside, in arnolds earlier years his chest wasn't as impressive as towards 72-75)
so the jones way would have meant that anyone with better legs would have had everything else better,,, NOT.
if 3 times a week was it then every twink in planet fitness would have an olympian body.
volume volume volume, only way i know how to grow.
-
arnie before meeting joe weider , and during arnie's pre-olympia days, when arnie was mr.universe,
arnold had good legs ,but maybe not as defined , as during his olympia reign ... !!

Wag Bennett: bodybuilder who helped Arnold Schwarzenegger
-----------------------------------------------
In the event, the 1966 title was to elude Schwarzenegger. He was beaten that year by the American bodybuilder Chet Yorton, whose musculature and legs were adjudged superior. Bennett immediately went to work on these areas, improving muscle definition and the power of his legs, and Schwarzenegger won his first Mr Universe title, the first of five, the following year.

BUT THESE ARNIE BIG, HUGE LEGS, WILL TELL U THE TRUTH ...
HIGH VOLUME WORKS , SINCE ARNIE PROVES IT.... !
::) I don't understand why a thread about Arnold's genetically weak legs( in comparison to his upperbody) has all of a sudden turned into a HIT vs high volume training thread.
Again, Arnold's legs were somewhat weak mostly because of his genetics, it has little to do with: "he did volume not HIT" thing.
Now, as far as training, what matters most is high intensity. I mean train as hard as possible, with maximum intensity. Volume can be adjusted according to the individual.
That's why Arnold was able to build great legs despite having them genetically weak, because he trained them with a lot of intensity.
Would Arnold's legs and overall whole body gotten even better, had he tried lowering his training volume and increasing his intensity?
It is a possibility I say, just look at what happened to Sergio Oliva when he was trained by Arthur Jones and did just that. He got into his biggest and best ever.
So, trying to "use" Arnold's legs as a prove of whether HIT or high volume work or not is a little silly. Too many variables come into play.

Now riding bike to shape up his legs ;)
