Title: An App for text messages being deleted
Post by: GRACIE JIU-JITSU on February 28, 2010, 01:41:44 PM

Since many of us spend more time texting on our iPhones than we spend actually having conversations on them, perhaps there is a sizable audience of iPhone owners who will find value in the new TigerText application.

The word "Tiger," of course, is likely invoked here as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the golf pro recently embarrassed before a global audience for his private-turned-public marital infidelities.

So is TigerText really the iPhone's ultimate app for people with "something to hide?" Basically, TigerText is a texting app that literally leaves no long-term record of who said what and when. In short, the app makes your texts disappear - or "self-destruct" according to the lifespan you establish for their existence. And by disappear, it's not an exaggeration. Text messages are deleted from your iPhone, the device that received messages from you, and even the server that made your exchanges possible.

Talk about covering your tracks, huh?

While the app is obviously a response to high-profile celebs like Tiger Woods who were partly busted by SMS messages that gave away extramarital "transgressions," the makers of the app are having fun with this nifty little offering that's being promoted as perfect for "cheating spouses, politicians, sexting teens!"

TigerText is free to try but there will be fees to use the full version - something you'll need if there's really something to "cover up."

How does it delete the text from the other persons phone?

 Lifespan.

WHAT DOES TEXT LIFESPAN MEAN?
“Lifespan” is the length of time a message will live before it is deleted on both devices. For example if you send a message at 2:00 PM and your lifespan is set to 4 hours, at 6:00 PM the message will be deleted from your device, the receiver’s device and our server.

WHAT DOES “DELETE ON READ” IN SETTINGS MEAN?
“Delete on Read” indicates a message will be deleted 1 minute after the receiver opens the message. When a message is sent with “Delete on Read” as soon as the recipient opens the message a countdown clock begins at 59 seconds. When the clock reaches 0 the message is deleted from the server and therefore does not exist on the recipient’s phone anymore. Please note that if a message is sent with “Delete on Read” but is not opened prior to the expiration of the Text Lifespan, the message will no longer exist and therefore not be read.

WHAT DOES “DELETE HISTORY” IN SETTINGS MEAN?
Some TigerText users really want to cover their tracks. Delete History will destroy the record of your conversation on your device once you exit the application. Thus, the next time you login there will no record of your ever having had a conversation on your device.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I SEND A MESSAGE AND IT EXPIRES BEFORE THE RECIPIENT READS IT?
The message is gone forever!

WHY DO YOU NEED MY MOBILE NUMBER?
Although not required for iPod Touch users, the mobile number allows TigerText to verify your device. By verifying your device, recipients of messages can be sure who their message is coming from.

HOW DO I KNOW HOW MANY MESSAGES I HAVE LEFT BEFORE I’VE USED MY ALLOTMENT?
Scroll to the bottom of the settings page and it will show how many text you have left and when your subscription runs out.

WHAT IF I SEND A TIGERTEXT TO SOMEONE WHO DOES NOT HAVE TIGERTEXT INSTALLED?
The user will receive a message from TigerText that encourages them to install the free reader. Once the free reader is installed, the user can read any message you send. Both users must have TigerText in order to communicate through the platform.

CAN I USE TIGERTEXT IF I HAVE AN IPOD ITOUCH?
Yes!

I believe texts are stored on a server so they never technically go into a phone.

In reading the above, you have to install the app on the other phone and give the program your phone number....so, the way it would delete the text on the other phone (presumably) would be that phone numbers probably work like IP addresses (again, presumably) and that the program sends a 'message' to the other persons phone to delete the message.

Pretty cool....but I think that opens up a shit ton of potential hacking issues of allowing another program from another phone have access to functions on your phone.

You don't need an App for this.  Your iPhone can delete individual text message items or entire message threads with a simple "delete" option.  Go to your text messages and select the "edit" button.  The you will be given the option to delete.

List, if you're worth 500 billion, you can afford a second phone, a BootyBerry... or the Iphuck.

Turn the power off, keep it in your golf bag.  Turn it on to check texts and send pictures of your privates to waitresses and pornstars of your liking.  Put your caddy's name on it, so if the wife finds it, you have plausible deniability.

Would you let someone to have a phone using your name?

Let's say he uses a phone under the caddy's name.

 The caddy would blackmail Tiger.

That is a stupid function.  The ability to delete a text message should rest with the phone's owner--not the sender.

But it's way better if I can do it myself.
Plus the message will be deleted from the server.
In some states its illegal to record a conversation... but to save a text apparently its not illegal.
And today nobody likes to talk on the phone anymore... damn I hate text.

I dunno.... his caddy gets 5 to 10% of Tiger's tournament winnings.

For that much money, I'd take credit for damn near anything.  Porn skank?  yep, that's me playa.  Banging in a church parking lot?  Sure thing buddy.

Plus, I wouldn't try blackmailing a dude with everything to lose and plenty of money to use to save it...

Maybe you wouldn't blackmail him. but what about the TV networks and news paper offering you money for information.

eh, I dunno...

If he had given me hundreds of thousands of dollars...
and I considered many rich dudes will do ANYTHING to preserve their situation...

I'd probably STFU.  I know, those 21-year old hostesses just want attention, a career, etc.  Me?  If I have enough money that I don't have to work again, I stay quiet and let my boy get his nut.

This app might work on non smart phones and blackberry.

It will not work on the Iphone because of this...

Iphone users go to any screen email, text or phone.

Hold the power button and press the home button. then go check your pics.

 Let me know what happen.
