White House Adviser Rahm's Older Brother: 'Heavier People' Bad for Economy

While the White House is making its last pushes for health care reform to be passed in Congress – a campaign against the so-called obesity epidemic has been ramped up in political circles. The media have played along, of course. First Lady Michelle Obama recently made an unusual appearance on the Fox News Channel about this issue.

But in all the obesity hand wringing some bizarre remarks from an important person were overlooked. Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, a White House adviser and the older brother to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, told the New York Times “Freakonomics Radio” recently that this condition has a broader impact on our lives, specifically the economy. (h/t Stuart James)

“I mean, we’re all focused on health care, diabetes and heart disease,” Emanuel said on Feb. 25. “But, there’s all sorts of things like the simple that, you know – heavier people – transportation is more, so there’s more spent on gasoline, more on jet fuel.”

Emanuel, a bioethicist at the American National Institutes of Health, explained that it’s not just energy costs, but also infrastructure.

“People have had to change, ah you know, the size of doorways, the size of chairs on airplanes and at sports stadiums,” Emanuel said. “So there’s a lot of hidden costs as well to the increasing girth of Americans.”

The obesity epidemic’s impact on the economy has been an argument used by left-leaning groups and pundits that advocate stricter regulations from the government for the past several years, now more recently employed by First Lady Michelle Obama. However, as Reason.tv’s Nick Gillespie recently pointed out, the best way to solve these alleged impediments on wealth and prosperity for the country is for the government to get out of the way so that people will have to pay for their choices.

More BS from the government, more smoke and mirrors to divert attention away from them as they destroy what left of America. How many fat people spent  820 Billion Dollars on a stimulus package that didn't stimulate a fucking thing?  Did fat people run the deficite up to what 14 Trillion? Those fat people I tell ya, if it wasn't for the government I don't know what we would do ::)

240 should just go ahead and admit it now that it was a failure, as in 6 months we could be in even worse shape.

There are only four drugs that improve the quality of life. All other drugs extend life.

it would be the most fiscally conservative thing to do. There's no possible way to calculate how much money it would save but many industries depend on fat people for their survival. Personally, they are job security and great learning in hospitals when their organs and stuff start failing.

Things like Insulin, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, thyroid meds and you have to include vaccines. 4 is too conservative but most drugs extend life without really affecting quality.

Added by edit: My girl is complaining and throwing out drugs that should be on the list, LOL@

Ummm according the Zeke Emanuel EVERYONE on here is obese. That pin head goes by the BMI index. That means ,for me at 5;9 Id have to weigh 160lbs,over that and Im fat.At 3% bodyfat I compete in bodybuilding at 224.So,according to Zeke and Rahm[two fags by the way]I need to loose 60 additional pounds at 3% bodyfat.Thats why its fucking gay as hell.

What about all the lazy skinny welfare recipients ?  I guess they are all OK ?

If someone is a law abiding, hard working  person, that pays their taxes,  it should be nobody's concern, if they are overweight.

The long term costs associated with fatassedness are probably greater. Easiest comparison is probably cigarette smokers, ultimately when they get sick it becomes expensive as crap though smoking is still considered a personal choice.

How many personal choices exist in a vacuum?
