Title: Are you healthy and in shape? Or just a walking heart attack?
Post by: ShipSekki on May 09, 2010, 07:39:58 AM
Can you run a mile in 6 minutes or less?

Can you hike up a 3000 foot mountain?

Can you bicycle 60 miles in one day?

Can you touch your toes without bending your knees?

 Can you do a handstand?

Can you play basketball for a solid hour?

Or are you just a permabulker walking around like an elephant who can't do shit?

Personally I would rather be able to do all of these things and be 170 pounds, than be a 260 pound ogre who can't do any of these things.

Some people here seem to think that being "in shape" is directly related to how hyyyooooge your arms are bro! Well, that's just not true. Sorry fat boy.

Well it doesn't have to be basketball.

The question is, can you play a physically intense sport for an hour? Like Basketball, Soccer, Rugby, Water Polo or whatever you like. It's a measure of fitness.

Shipsekki, please stop contradicting yourself. Before you stated that what looks healthy and/or good is a matter of perspective. You stated that some people might think powerlifters look healthy. And I quote "Its a matter of perspective" - ShipSekki.

Just because you think climbing a mountain means your healthy doesn't necessarily make it so.

Its a matter of perspective.

 You read it wrong.

I think that all the things I listed here are true measures of health and fitness.

Some people mistakenly think that bulky 270 pounds guys are "in shape" just because they have big muscles. And this is almost always false.

There are exceptions to every rule though.

Back in 2005, I was the guy on the left... 210 pounds and disgusting.  Other message boards said "good job bro, you'll be 240 pounds in no time!  Keep on plugging away" with all sorts of delusional support.  I could do none of the things above.

Getbig kept it real with me.  Told me to get my fat ass on a treadmill.  Today I'm an upper 170s twink who has abs even when not flexing.  I can do all of the thing above, easily actually.

Thanks getbig!

I have trouble believing those that said they can run a 6 minute mile.  That's 10 MPH on the treadmill for a mile at a 1% grade to simulate a six minute mile.  If you can do that you're in decent cardio shape having a good Vo2.  I haven't met to many bodybuilders that can do that.

I ran a 5:15 mile when I was younger.

Most people that just complete a marathon and don't race it are not capable of a 6 minute mile.  I would bet that all sub 4 hour marathoners could but I would have trouble believing that any one completing it in over 4 hours could do it.

Strength without conditioning is worthless.  That's why elite military, boxers, wrestlers, MMA guys all hit the road.  You need gas in the tank.

I went through a long cold winter out here and I barely did any cardio. Just sat around lifting weights, doing a little yoga and eating and gained almost 35 pounds. This bulking life is not good. It doesn't feel good. It's much better to be healthy and conditioned.

It depends what you're into though. I'm into hiking, backpacking, sports and being active when the weather is good. If you are just a TV watching couch potatoe and than there's no need to get in shape.

 It's all about being inbetween.

Being muscular and cut with some decent mass. Yet also being flexible, athletic and conditioned for cardio.

Long distance runners are on the extreme end of the spectrum for being skinny and in shape, but weak as hell.

It's all about balance. I look to boxers, martial artists, yogis, and some 70 bodybuilders as my ultimate goal. I definitely don't look to freakshow IFBB guys as my fitness role models.

That's awesome for you then. That's very, very uncommon.

Most guys don't have the genetics for that. When they push themselves to 260 with huge arms they have to do heavy bulking for years and years and limit cardio. And then if they decide to get in shape and do lots of cardio later, they lose a lot of mass.

Of course if you use lots of hormones this changes the whole game though.

It's better to have conditioning than be bulked up.
I've lifted since I was a teenager. It is much harder to gain and HOLD ON to muscle than it is to stay in decent cardio shape. Also sucking wind after a few hard sprints is much harder than any lactic acid burn.

Being in good cario shape is way more practical. Most lifters don't get to use their strength/muscles at all outside helping a buddy move their apartment once a year. The only people that dig the huge muscle look, are other men and disgusting women.

I always think of it in the worst case scenario of like 1 in 1,000,000 chance happening. If for whatever reason I got stranded in the middle of nowhere what's going to come into play more...the fact you have a 2,000 total in bench/squat/dead or the fact you can run a sub 6 minute mile? ...obviously the cardio aspect.

True.  At 293 I was in the best cardio shape ever.  I just couldn't get tired.  When I think about all the shit I did back then today I just can't feel it.  I mean I barely get up stairs now. Back then I would go up stairs three at a time.  Ride my bike miles and miles up steep hill without quiting.  I was never home cause I was out training or doing something physical.  I really want to get back there

I remember in high school winning my last wrestling match ever. WHen the ref raised my hand, all I could think of was that I'll never be in this good of shape ever again.

I joined LA Boxing 7 weeks ago and I'm getting back there as far as cardio goes...it's starting to suck less every week.

I must say that Im rather impressed with all of those who can run a sub 6 min mile, that an indication of a rather outstanding level of fitness. I would say anyone who could run a mile in less than 7 min and 30 sec is a more resonable standard.

I'm guessing you have never heard of Dante, the creator of DC training. !?!?

His life as well as the life of his supplicates revolve around bulking up with as much mass as possible at all costs possible! He aspires to bee tippin the scales at 300 lbs drugged to the gills and still doing early AM cardio! Cus he says that how you gain mass! BOOOOOM!

It's all about being inbetween.

Being muscular and cut with some decent mass. Yet also being flexible, athletic and conditioned for cardio.

maybe someday you will achieve that....that sure isn't you now

Sorry fat boy.
doesnt really sound like you have a choice... twink

Shipsekki, you don't have to be 170lbs to do all that shit.

I'm not even gonna pretend i can run a 6 minute mile, but i can do all the rest and i'm 232.

I do agree with you on unfit permabulkers though. Can't be neglecting the old heart and lung health for the sake of filling out an XXXL shirt.

Thanks for the honest answer newmom :) Maybe I was trying to "call u out" on the 6 min mile thing, but I guess that now u realize how tough it is to run a actual 6 min mile :) P.S  I think that I would be quite lucky to break an 8 min mile at the moment ;)

Oh gosh I didn't take it as calling  me out. I did my running this am. When I went to the gym again, I did my stairclimber workout. I said let me do a mile run in 6 minutes. UM that didn't happen at all. I run 6 days a week and feel I'm pretty proficient in the running department. I think it is easier for leaner tall men to run that though. There was a man next to me, I'd say at least 5 ft 10 and I looked over at his speed and it was 8.5 without batting an eye

I have logged a lot of miles on the track, road and yes treadmill. I was a sprinter in high school and college.   I use the treadmill example because that's what most bodybuilders can relate to.  So 10mph at 1% incline does equal the effort to run a six minute mile on level road.  If the treadmill is so worthless get on one at 10MPH and see if you can run a mile.  It should be easy because the treadmill is worthless.

treadmills are the most useless thing in the gym.....get out and actually try it...

thank you but it wasn't easy that is for sure. I do find it much easier to run outside in races then the treadmill as far as speed goes. I ran my first 5k last year with a 8 min mile average and sure doesnt seem like I was running that face in the race. The marathon I ran last year, my average was 12.29 mile..ugh gotta improve that this year on the next marathon

I'd rather be outside running down a trail or through a city at night

Bicycling however is a great thing....here in AZ i bike a lot of short trips that i otherwise would drive to....I bike to my gym at least three times a week, up to the store if i'm doing a light shopping....etc.

It's good cardio and I'm actually trying to be a little environment friendly

why would i need all that protein powder when all thats needed to maximally stimulate synthesis is 20g  ???

i can get 20g from milk, a little tuna, chicken, beef, bacon, some eggs etc etc

in fact you yourself have commented in another thread that you are better eating a few grams of protein every 20mins or so, rather than big feedings.

not to mention - dantes powder tastes like ass.

ummmmmmmm   FATPANDA

is there a requirement on protein shakes that one must overcomsume them??

is there a requirement on protein shakes that one must use them exclusively instead of whole food?

is there a reason why you would only want to buy 20 grams of protein at once if you could get pounds!! of the stuff at once and save money per gram?? (wholesale is always cheaper)

FATPANDA

the protein on dante's site trueprotein is cheaper gram for gram than any other source of protein. cheaper than beef, cheraper cthan chicken, cheaper than milk, cheaper than tuna.

not only is the protein cheaper, but its the best possible protein (whey) you can possibly take in.

the cheapest and the best?

oh yeah, did i mention free flavoring??

(btw the only protein that tastes bad is the hydrolyzed proteins. the rest taste great, especially when you use his free flavoring system.

Advice for newmom at the quest for a 6 min mile. Try some interval training, by running 4 to 8 quarter mile intervals and running each interval at a 90 sec clip at a 2 to 1 ratio, meaning 90 sec quarter mile run followed by a 3 min walk, do this twice a week. Remember, I am just an out of shape fat toad, but that doesn't mean that I don't know what I'm talkin bout :>

Interesting mile run fact:

When Roger Bannister ran the first sub-4:00 mile in 1954, he trained primarily with high intensity 400-meter sprints.  At the time, other competitive mile runners trained almost exclusively with low intensity long distance running.  This is why he was able to throw down his enemies and smite their ruin 8)
