Deputy Kyle Dinkheller was shot and killed after pulling over a man on a rural road about 6 miles north of Dublin, Georgia. During the traffic stop he called in for backup. Before the backup arrived he was shot by the man with a rifle. He was able to return fire, striking the suspect in the stomach. The suspect was found during a search the next morning and taken into custody.
The entire incident was videotaped by a camera in Deputy Dinkheller's patrol car. On January 28, 2000, the suspect was found guilty of murder and was sentenced to death two days later.
Deputy Dinkheller is survived by his expectant wife and 22-month-old daughter. Deputy Dinkheller's son was born in early September 1998

Some of my mods on my page are Vietnam Vets and especially one Moderator is extremly screwed up PTSD and all, it went as far as that he dropped of the radar for a few month and he has a lot of members really care about him so they tracked him down and send im a letter since he wouldn't answer the phone, he came back and said he was
ready to kill himself and all.
A lot of vets have the feeling (and I have heard this a lot) that the state is not looking after them, they are valuble to the government as long as they are active members of the defense force but when they have to battle with their demons and PTSD they are not being looked after as much as they should be.

Clips like this get shown at show ups, or roll calls at police departments in the hopes that it will sink in to some of the officers that this very day they may have to take someones life and they need to be honest with themselves and determine if they can do it or not. This officer may have never really thought it could happen to him and mentally prepared himself to pull the trigger. Being in the same line of work, it's unfathomable to me that he didn't react much sooner. Unfortunatley he discovered too late he might be in the wrong career field. Really rips my heart out to see things like that

It's not routine for drivers to refuse to take their hands out of thier pockets, it's not routine although in some lower states it does occur, for drivers to break out into a jig... You're probably right, when he first stopped the vehicle he probably thought it would go down like the hundreds he stopped before. It's hard enough to hit anywhere on a person when you are shooting in a high stress situation so while shooting to wound sounds like the humane thing to do, it's just not very practical.

Overall what most traffic cops or any other cop does it tell people to keep their hand IN their pockets, since they don't know at this time what they have in their pockets, some handguns are very small but can still harm and kill you.
The vid has been analysed for a long time since it has been around for a quite some time, if you pay attention to the deputy's voice you can hear that he always must have had a strange feeling about this guy.
The problem with being a cop is that even if you shoot somebody who shot at you first the news tend to spin it in the favor of the person that got shoot, before you know it there are interviews of family members and neighbors that testify that the person in question was such a good brother in law and a good neighbor and it seems to be always overlooked that the friggen guy tried to shoot a police officer.
Take for example an incident in Ireland, mentally challenged guy barricades himself in house with shotgun, the rapid response team (WITH UZI's I shit you not) suround the house and the guy comes out leveling his shotgun at the officers and advancing at them.
Of course they shot him.
Now for years after that all kinda do gooders were debating if they did right and why they shot him (THE GUY FUCKING LEVELED his shotgun and advanced atm the for christ sake) also the same people tend to say ... well why did they not shoot him in the legs ::) - like in the movies right? I've shot an Uzi on many occasions, it might be a simple solution for a quick and dirty job but it is NOT accurate enough to shoot somebody in the leg.
So thats part of the reason why he was hessitating, because he was of course thinking shit if I shoot him I be in so much trouble I might loose my job and my family and I will feel bad.
If you ask me he should have shot at him the second he walked back to his truck and said I've got something for you.

We're cool. And I know what you mean about how the media will spin any shooting into it being the cops fault. Here in my own town we had an officer shoot a female who had chased an apartment manager with a butcher knife, was standing over her and the knife was coming down towards the victim. One shot.. dead right there.. You couldn't paint a better scenario for a good shooting. The officer was white, the deceased minority female with a history of mental issues (unknown to the officer). Her family had disowned her long ago..but came out of the woodwork after the shooting to proclaim how horrible it was that their innocent little girl was shot and killed for no reason. It's unfortunatley part of the process.
We have a saying about being tried by 12 rather than carried by six. In any event, regardless of the why... you and I obviously agree it was tragic

every vietnam veteran has discribed what a real life was for them when they were 22, it was what you guys say disgusting and scary and horrid, hell even younger than 22, some of them went to vietnam in their pre teens... you know how hard it was for veterans after the war, hell it's still hard... over 80% of them who are allive are homeless... some fucking government you guys have (if you're american)

It's easy to Monday morning quarterback this cop. Many are right in saying fear of losing his job and going to jail could have made this cop hesitate. That cop knows how much the media and a big segment of society wish him ill. Cops just respond to bad situations. They are always given the evils of society to deal with.
Even in clean shootings the cop pulling the trigger is seconded guessed for ever. The split second decision to pull the trigger is debated for days by the media, juries, lawyers, judges and the public. The cop pulling the trigger doesn't have the luxury of getting a nights sleep in his decision.
I don't care that he was a Vietnam vet. Murdering a cop because he was going to get a traffic ticket is pure evil. How many World War II vets came back and led productive lives that many have called the greatest generation ever.

I find it incomprehensible that anybody could defend such a senseless killing. I am no great fan of police, but that clip shows an obviously deranged man unnecessarily taking another life all because he couldn't handle his emotions. I dont care if he fought in every war since the beginning of time, get over it, the hillbilly should man up and deal with his emotional life. I am tired of these war vets playing hard done by, a lot of them cant wait to "see action" and then piss themselves when they do and complain for eternity when they come home.

I. Factual Background
On January 12, 1998, Brannan was stopped for driving his truck at
98 miles per hour by Kyle Dinkheller, a Laurens County Deputy Sheriff.
Dinkheller’s patrol cruiser was equipped with a video recorder, and Dinkheller
was wearing a microphone. The recording shows that Brannan exited his truck
and addressed Dinkheller with relative cordiality. However, Brannan became
angry with Dinkheller when he ordered Brannan to take his hands out of his
pockets. Brannan shouted, “Fuck you, goddamn it, here I am. Shoot my
fucking ass.” Brannan then began dancing around in the street, yelling, “Here
I am, here I am . . . shoot me.” When Dinkheller placed a call on his radio for
assistance, Brannan yelled, “Who are you calling, ####?” Brannan then
charged at Dinkheller repeatedly as Dinkheller ordered him to get back and drew
his baton. Brannan yelled, “Fuck you,” repeatedly, and he then yelled, “I am a
goddamn Vietnam combat veteran.” Brannan then began rummaging behind the
driver’s seat of his truck, ignoring Dinkheller’s orders for him to stop. Brannan
yelled that he was in fear for his life, and Dinkheller replied that he was in fear
for his own life. Brannan took a .30 caliber carbine rifle from his truck,
crouched at the door of his truck, and pointed the rifle at Dinkheller. After
Dinkheller repeatedly ordered Brannan to put the rifle down, shots were fired
by both men. Dinkheller was hit, and he attempted to retreat and take cover
behind the patrol cruiser. Brannan pursued Dinkheller, firing repeatedly and
reloading. Brannan was shot once in the abdomen. Dinkheller had been shot
nine times and had likely lost consciousness when Brannan took careful aim,
said, “Die fucker,” and fired a final shot. Brannan then fled in his truck. He
was discovered hiding in the woods outside his home and was arrested. He gave
statements to GBI agents indicating that he regretted what had happened but that
he believed Dinkheller had provoked him with an aggressive and disrespectful
approach.

OMG!! what a friggin travesty!! 17 yr NYPD vet who retired at 9/11,and my stomach turned at this video..I worked 17 years in NYC,15 in the south bronx & 2 citywide in plainclothes-been shot at,been in shootouts,had a fellow cop who was shot die in my arms,had perps(bad guys) die at my hands and this video still shocks me and while I feel for the family and hate the term ""monday morning qb" have many questions ....why when hilbilly started his dance(shindig) why he didnt mace,tazer,or nail the motherucker with his nightstick?He was withing his rights! He has a daughter and pregnant wife at home and therefore should have been way more careful and blasted the guy as soon as he saw the gun, or maced or tazed him when he started dancing. Was he thinking "well he hasnt listened to a damn thing I've said since I've pulled him over, I've already told him to put the gun down 7 times, maybe he will listen to me the 8th or 9th time I tell him to put the gun down". Stupid cop, was just a matter of time before he was killed.
Because of his incompetance his children have to grow up without a father. I wouldn't feel sorry for a tight rope walker who fell to his death because he was too ignorant to have a saftey net, nor would I feel sorry for a rock climber who doesn't use ropes, and I don't really feel sorry for a cop who was giving a plethora of indications he was dealing with an unstable subject, yet took 0 measures to preserve his life. Hard to feel sorry for stupid people.

u know the clip is pretty crazy, but there are a ton of dirty cops out there, and Im sure this cop wasnt one, but me myself being fucked by a dirtycop and a dirty judicial system, Im sure that vet harbored alot of ill feelings towards government, cops, etc....bc believe me when you become someone who has been fucked by a dirty cop, and dirty DA, and judges, you get fucked up mentally, physically, it takes a toll on you, and this guy was in vietnam, he been goin thru probably 40 years of shit...........you know when a person signs on to be a law enforcement agent, these things are part of the job....yeah its unfortunate, but there been alot of dirty cops do bad shit to fuck peoples lives up, and Im one of the people it happened to. I am no great fan of police, but that clip shows an obviously deranged man unnecessarily taking another life all because he couldn't handle his emotions. See this is where that cop (imo) should have and could have "put him down"....sure he would have been on admin leave while they reviewed the tape, but damn that....this fool was obviously out his mind, his checkered veteran "hero" mental status would have been taken in consideration as just such (loose cannon)...not to mention the FULLY LOADED weapon he had on his seat not concealed at all.
Like I said in my earlier post...as soon as he charged him...that cop should have dropped his a$$. Sure it would have been questionable, but in the end he would have been justified imo.
Me being former military...I would have no doubt put his a$$ down as soon as he charged....at the VERY latest would have been when he went to his vehicle and brandished a firearm (no matter if it's a fk'n water gun)...open fire on him.

if you put another persons life in danger by threatening to take it away with a fire arm, be prepared to lose your own via a firearm
people need to learn to subdue or fight a person with their hands, not draw guns. to many pansies reach for the gun to fast and end up paying the price.

Listen...let me help you out here....the military teaches us (while actively serving might I add) to surrender power to a police officer no matter what...give them complete control. We know and the military knows...we've had waaaay more combat training then a standard uniform cop.
If a cop has to scream, yell..and then draw his gun on me or even REACH for it...I've already failed as a veteran. He feels threatened by ME.
the cop failed in following through and killing the veteran. By not doing so the veteran had the confidence and experience to use suppression fire with a rifle (fully loaded on the seat might I add) and kill the officer.
The "veteran" showed zero discipline and no honor in his antics and is an embarrassment to those of us who served and should have been killed onsite and that moment. ...this is no different then me beating the crap out a guy...I'm waaay more advanced in physical combat and know how to physically impair a human...I'd be an embarrassment if i were to fight a guy that I know i over match from a combat perspective.
There is no way you can rationalize his behavior and antics compared to a normal everyday civilian who more than likely would not have the confidence to advance on an officer like that with a rifle. Most would fire, get in their car...and LEAVE....they don't suppress the officer, back him down and continue fire until he's dead.
The only problem i see here is the cop didn't have the killer instinct to knock this guy off, tase him..whatever..to get control. Cops are simple to deal with..give them control basically...easy.
Now in the hood somewhere...yes there are shady cops...but this wasn't some hood/street environment....this was a traffic stop for christ sakes.

I'm not sure how much of the blame should fall on the cop vs the teachers at his police academy though, because from the reading I have done on this incident it appears he was taught not to shoot until the weapon is pointed at him, which has since been changed because of what happened to this officer.

This vet was probably was waiting for years to have an excuse to use that rifle to kill someone (while else would he drive around with it?)
He got his chance... and it was all captured on video... sealing his fate
