Don't know if you guys remember, or have read, but the reason Piper went face in the mid-atlantic/georgia territories was because he stepped in when some knife wielding maniac was attacking some kids.  he suffered a chest wound.  It was all over the local media, so of course in those kayfabe days he couldn't be a heel any longer.

I'm familiar with the incident, but I didn't know that was what initiated his face turn at that time.
I suspect he would have remained heel in WWF had the fans not done a 180 during his WMII match with Mr. T.

Piper was always a guy you loved to hate.
There were other heels who had their little cliques of rebel fans; guys like Superstar Graham & Flair, etc.
But, Mania 2 was weird.
Roddy was doing everything he was supposed to/could to stay bad, but the fans just started cheering for him like early shades of Austin 3:16.

I suspect its because everyone legitametly hated Mr.T. After that he went nowhere and fell off the face of the earth. People got tired of "I pitty the fool".

T was one of the shallowest, most one-dimensional personalities ever in show-biz.

lol...I remember back in 1985 just before the very first WM, there was a special Piper's pit at MSG and Mr.T was his guest. Before he came out Piper chimes in and says...

"I know your a coward but if you would come out after they finish powdering your nose...with all that dark powder....come on out Mr.T the wonderful human being."

unbelievalbe :)
