No wonder the president's wife is passing the hat to his supporters asking for $3 campaign donations. Have you seen the size of the national debt? It's a new record.
The United States of America now owes someone(s) $13,665,000,000,000.
By 2012, when Hillary Clinton next challenges Barack Obama for their party's presidential nomination, the national debt will be even larger than today's record -- $16,500,000,000,000, according to current federal estimates. That's more money than the entire United States economy produces in a complete year.
That's also way more money than either Obama or Clinton spent to win the Democratic nomination in 2008.
This stunning debt news comes to us courtesy of Mark Knoller of CBS News, who is the White House press corps' chief cruncher of all things numbers.
Knoller has also figured out that during Obama's presidential watch, the....
...national debt has increased by $3,039,000,000,000, as in, that much more than it was when he took the oath on Jan. 20, 2009, in front of millions of excited witnesses and Aretha Franklin's huge hat.
Obama prefers to lay the blame or credit for this gargantuan spending increase at the cowboy-booted feet of his Lone Star Republican predecessor. During George W. Bush's Oval Office tenure, the national debt increased more -- by $4.9 trillion, in fact.
However, Bush took 96 months to do that.
Obama has accomplished his spending feat in less than 21 months. Under his spendership the national debt has grown about $4.8 billion every day since he took the oath of office twice, just to be safe.
Just imagine the dough Obama could push out the door given another two years of partnership with Democratic congressional leaders like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.
Those Democrat majorities controlling Congress since 2007 didn't have time to get around to passing a federal budget this fiscal year, what with all the additional spending measures and recesses and necessary campaigning and all.
But according to polls in recent months, the federal debt and spending deficit have emerged as major concerns of American voters, who have this silly idea from their own lives that spending ought to be more in line with available resources. They may have something to say about this on Nov. 2.
The ongoing gap -- or, more accurately, chasm -- between federal in-come and out-go is a major reason why Obama says he opposes a continuation of tax cuts for what he considers wealthy Americans. He wants that tax money coming in to help cover spending.
Not much talk yet about cutting that spending.
But maybe that subject will come up now and then when the newer members of Congress convene in January.

They could and should be touched. However, a lot of that number in the last two years in the Stim Bill, AIG Bailout, Fannie Freddy, GM, the escalation of the wars etc.
We need to balance our damn budget and get spending under control like we did in the mid 90's. Its totally crazy and they are causing the Fed Reserve to devalue the dollar to keep this charade going. Bro - you have no idea how bad a fiscal mess we are in with all of this out of control spending and the crazy schemes that are being hatched to prop this nonsense up.

the issue with GM was that their labor costs were far too high for the product that were placing on the market. they needed to restructure to reality, BUT NO, Santa claus Barack decided that the fellow taxpayers should bail out the UAW from their bloated and unsustainable contracts and give the illusion of saving jobs, when is essence they simply destroyed someones elses' job in another sector. By devaluing the dollar, stealing taxes from one guy to pay GM, they destroyed jobs in another sector. Hence why UE is still rising!
Like I keep saying - your ignorance on econ is what it is. read a book on econ for fucks's sake.

Ford saw ahead of time that their business plan wasn't working, that SUVs aren't marketable anymore and a host of other cost problems that were contributing to their near-collapse. They took the steps to fix it and as a result not only did they not need to be bailed out but they are now killing it.
What's better? Closing plants or keeping them open until your company collapses, and 10x as many lose their jobs?

One of my opponents was Dinesh D'Souza: He wasn't the only one who maintained that Reagan had been historically vindicated by the wreckage of the Soviet Union. Some of us on the left had also been very glad indeed to see the end of the Russian empire and the Cold War. But nothing could make me forget what the Reagan years had actually been like.
Ronald Reagan claimed that the Russian language had no word for "freedom." (The word is "svoboda"; it's quite well attested in Russian literature.) Ronald Reagan said that intercontinental ballistic missiles (not that there are any non-ballistic missiles—a corruption of language that isn't his fault) could be recalled once launched. Ronald Reagan said that he sought a "Star Wars" defense only in order to share the technology with the tyrants of the U.S.S.R. Ronald Reagan professed to be annoyed when people called it "Star Wars," even though he had ended his speech on the subject with the lame quip, "May the force be with you." Ronald Reagan used to alarm his Soviet counterparts by saying that surely they'd both unite against an invasion from Mars. Ronald Reagan used to alarm other constituencies by speaking freely about the "End Times" foreshadowed in the Bible. Reagan then modestly let his underlings maintain that he was too dense to understand the connection between the two impeachable crimes. He then switched without any apparent strain to a policy of backing Saddam Hussein against Iran. (If Margaret Thatcher's intelligence services had not bugged Oliver North in London and become infuriated because all European nations were boycotting Iran at Reagan's request, we might still not know about this.)
One could go on. I only saw him once up close, which happened to be when he got a question he didn't like. Was it true that his staff in the 1980 debates had stolen President Carter's briefing book? (They had.) The famously genial grin turned into a rictus of senile fury: I was looking at a cruel and stupid lizard. His reply was that maybe his staff had, and maybe they hadn't, but what about the leak of the Pentagon Papers? Thus, a secret theft of presidential documents was equated with the public disclosure of needful information. This was a man never short of a cheap jibe or the sort of falsehood that would, however laughable, buy him some time.
The fox, as has been pointed out by more than one philosopher, knows many small things, whereas the hedgehog knows one big thing. Ronald Reagan was neither a fox nor a hedgehog. He was as dumb as a stump. He could have had anyone in the world to dinner, any night of the week, but took most of his meals on a White House TV tray. He had no friends, only cronies. His children didn't like him all that much. He met his second wife—the one that you remember—because she needed to get off a Hollywood blacklist and he was the man to see. Year in and year out in Washington, I could not believe that such a man had even been a poor governor of California in a bad year, let alone that such a smart country would put up with such an obvious phony and loon.
However, there came a day when Mikhail Gorbachev visited Washington and when the Marriott Hotel—host of the summit press conferences—turned its restaurant into the "Glasnost Cafe." On the sidewalk, LaRouche supporters wearing Reagan masks paraded with umbrellas, in mimicry of Neville Chamberlain. I huddled from dawn to dusk with friends, wondering if it could be real. Many of those friends had twice my IQ, or let's say six times that of the then-chief executive. These friends had all deeply wanted either Jimmy Carter or Walter Mondale to be, presumably successively, the president instead of Reagan. They would go on to put Michael Dukakis and Lloyd Bentsen bumper stickers on their vehicles. No doubt they wish that Mondale had been in the White House when the U.S.S.R. threw in the towel, just as they presumably yearn to have had Dukakis on watch when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. I have been wondering ever since not just about the stupidity of American politics, but about the need of so many American intellectuals to prove themselves clever by showing that they are smarter than the latest idiot in power, or the latest Republican at any rate.

I'm not sure exactly... GM closing would have cost 1 Million jobs.
They were not in the same position as Ford at the time. Ford did let many many people go... I don't know the exact number, but I've heard numbers of 1 million jobs lost if GM had collapsed.
I feel that 1 million jobs lost and the company that produces the corvette being sold to an outside country would be pretty damn bad.
