Beginning in 2011 a new division for men will be introduced – Men’s Physique. The following are the guidelines/rules.

Judging Criteria:

* Muscularity and Body Condition: Judges will be looking for fit contestants who display proper shape and symmetry combined with muscularity and overall condition. This is not a bodybuilding contest so extreme muscularity should be marked down.

Competitors will enter the stage without a shirt and barefoot. No lewd acts are allowed. Example: The moon pose. Judges are looking for the contestant with the best stage presence and poise who can successfully convey his personality to the audience.

COMPETITION JUDGING

Good god. This will probably take off in all honesty, you have a better shot of having the next Arnold like person coming from this division than the BBing one for sure these days.

But it fucking sucks that they allowed the men's BBing to become such a sideshow that they have to do this.

However it may not work out at all unless it was its own event without association to the real contests.

"This is not a bodybuilding contest so extreme muscularity should be marked down."

Huh?  So if you come to this show without enough muscle you lose, but if you come with too much muscle you also lose?  Can you give us an example of someone who would win this contest?  Is Bill Davey too muscled or not muscled enough?  Can one win this contest without steroids or are contestants expected to juice--just not juice too much?  ???

I have said it from the start.  If they want a fit physique contest at the expo as an extra fun thing , fine. Giving it pro card status is silly. After some reflection, I am not letting it drive me away from attending contests. I am done with judging in the NPC, but I may still compete as a bodybuilder.

I  would never be rude to any guys in the male fitness division, at a contest. I simply have NO interest in seeing it or judging it, etc.

Musclemania and other orgs have similar categories, but they call it Model.  Why the confusing name of Physique?

on the women's side, the categories are generally called Physique, Figure (sometimes called Body Fitness in Europe), Fitness, Bikini, and Model Search.

on the men's side, esp outside the US, there is Bodybuilding, Classic Bodybuilding, Fitness, and Model.

so, now Women's Physique is the hardcore roided out bodybuilding.  and Men's Physique is for fitness models.

Yeah I am very curious what is "to much" for a division like this. Doing something like this says that it wants to deviate from the "user" look but I suspect the winners will still be "using" just not in large amounts.

The whole damn thing is a joke anyway honestly. When you realize you need a nightmarish quantity of illegal drugs just to attempt it, you find out quickly that you really have no chance from the get go.

Bodybuilding has to be natural or they need to legalize steroids. Otherwise it will never work for the public as a whole.

I don't know what WPD is.  I'm talking about amateur women's bodybuilding in the US and elsewhere:  the non-Figure, non-Bikini, non-Model Search category, the one that Amber DeFrancesco won at this year's Nationals, is generally called Physique.

Terrible idea; that will, in time, over shadow the bodybuilding aspect of the shows.

A piss poor attempt to make the sport more mainstream and appeal to 120lbs twinks!

May as well turn the fucking thing into a full blown pageant.

I checked and the all seem to do this "model, figure or fitness whatever".
Why? It insures the promoter will cover their costs and make some profit via just the entry fee and people each contestant brings to watch. Bodybuilding does not have much of a fan base or media coverage in the last few years.
Now, the Arnold always sells out and the Olympia does well, but other shows would be hurting if they didn't add more entrants.

It made sense that the figure and especially bikini divisions would be packed with entrants and popular.
The avg female wants to look like that and most guys enjoy seeing them, etc.

* Now the big question is, will the avg guy who works out want to spend $$ to compete in a male fitness body pageant?????
I tend to to doubt it.

Sagi's about the size of the top amateurs prior to the introduction of insulin and growth hormone (not saying that's how he got there).   so basically Men's Physique is suppose to be bodybuilding 1989?  I doubt it.  I think Men's Physique 2010 is suppose to be closer to what's on the cover of the fitness magazines.

But he's yet to put up any photos of what the criteria of mens physique is supposed to be.

Does the npc/ifbb even know what they're looking for yet?

Exactly the point, good post.
I think smaller guys should simply compete in the jr or novice classes in their wt class.
This is what state and local level NPC contests should be about, along with a handful of good guys in the open class.

The new male physique deal is nothing more than a male beauty contest. It isn't bodybuilding and they don't even judge or pose their legs.

They should have called it the male modeling division.  By calling it physique, you could have Dexter Jackson walk out in board shorts and have the best physique.  There's no such thing as not rewarding muscularity, it's a physique contest.

I went to a show a few weeks ago, and some of the guys in the men's physique division would have placed well in the open class for bodybuilding. You see a lot of variation in terms of musclarity, but the judges seem to go mostly for conditioning and proportion. I don't have a video from the show I went to, but here is one just to show you what it is like. It seems kind of gay at first but when you compare it to actual bodybuilding, its not that bad.

There are two (2) sides to every story …. And here are three (3) of them.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly  ……  as seen by numerous GetBiggers:

1. The Good:

This new Men’s Physique Division will open up a lot of financial opportunities for a lot of guys and many GetBiggers who criticize the likes of Jay and Ronnie and all those other beefed up, bald-headed guys you seem to despise so damn much.

The supplement companies will hire more public-appealing models who will be featured in their ads to enhance their sales.

It will help the promoters make a decent income for their efforts.

It will be of great financial benefit for the NPC.

2. The Bad:

It will add to the length of every NPC event and cause the competitors to “Hurry up and wait!’ which was a serious problem in an earlier day. (see below).

BUT … I don’t see this added length being a problem for the fans if the event is run on a reliable time schedule allowing fans to see that part of the contest that they are interested in and leaving shortly thereafter. (Actually the NPC does a good job achieving this at the yearly USA.)

4. The Ugly:

It seems that a lot of us GetBiggters who attend NPC contests complain  about overly bloated muscle heads competing on stage in skimpy posing trunks ….. and then we still complain when the contestants are not ‘overly bloated’ and competing on stage in knee length shorts and then make unfounded accusations about the cotestants.

Take that as the Ugly part!

And … some of you guys and gals might be able to recall just HOW and WHY the NPC came into existence.

No room here to tell you the somewhat complicated “HOW” but here’s the very simple (but not all inclusive)  “WHY”!

Back in the 60’s most bodybuilding events were held with lifting events. And those lifting events held priority and began at decent hours while the bodybuilding event (there was only one back then) was allowed to start only after the conclusion of the lifting event and only after all the lifting trophies had been presented.

This ensured that some people would be in the audience to witness the lifting awards.

So on many occasions the first bodybuilding competitor got on stage long after midnight and the BB trophies were passed around as the sun came up.

Those were the days of the AAU’s dominion over competitive bodybuilding and the very start of its demise within the bodybuilding world.

Somewhere here there’s a lesson to be learned.

Does history really repeat itself?

I personally hope NOT as I know the principals and under the circumstances …. They do a damn fine job.

Thanks for reading down this far, Stunt

yeah, well something else about why AAU contests fell out of favor and the NPC became dominate.  The AAU Mr contests was to find the best representative of the ideal male.  Facial appearance, personality and interview skills were part of the judging.  So more often than not the most muscular guy did not win the overall.  Weider's amateur IFBB said that they will judge on muscularity only.  Fans liked that. Then Weider was able to win the right to promote some AAU events, some in the AAU revolted, and what was left became the NPC.  the AAU lasted another 20 years, trying to go the natural route near the end, before they washed their hands of bodybuilding.

With AMI going bankrupt, there may not be an Olympia this year and bodybuilding may be seeing it's last days. ;D

Don't you mean competitive professional bodybuilding? There will always be folks who seek to change their physical structure via weight training. Also folks are naturally competitive. I suspect there will also always be some level of bodybuilding competitions. Maybe it will not be the Mr. Olympia but there will be a Mr or Ms something or other.

Why is the American public so afraid of the male body. Women in a similar contest are wearing thongs!

Interesting, isn't it? I was under the impression than modern man in the last couple of decades had become just as objectified as are women. Women buy those calendars with shirtless fireman and such....I know this because my wife is one of those women. She's very considerate of my feelings though; she always tells me I look better than those dudes....yeah right! I wondered what's with the board shorts when I read the original post. Like someone said, maybe these fellas won't have quads worth showing off.

* Stage Presence and Personality: Contestants will be asked to walk in board shorts (shorts must be just above the knee in length and can be one inch below the belly button, no spandex and no logos are permitted on the board shorts however a manufacturer’s logo such as Nike symbol or Billabong are acceptable. Competitors will enter the stage without a shirt and barefoot. No lewd acts are allowed. Example: The moon pose. Judges are looking for the contestant with the best stage presence and poise who can successfully convey his personality to the audience.

Stage presence? poise???!!!!!  WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF??????? FUUUKKING GAAAAAAYYYYYYY

Some folks think Kai Greene getting on stage wearing whatever and doing is elaborate posing routine with a mask on his face is fucking gay. You can't please everyone.

Insecurity About themselves, plus gay men go gaga...

I am bisexual. I think guys and gals should pose nude. I vote no on board shorts from navel to knee. And who the heck wears board shorts 1" below their navel anyway. The look today is board shorts about to fall off with a little butt crack showing at the top in the back and some pubes showing in the front. Yeah!

If bodybuilding is a sport than dog shows and horse auctions shoul be considered sports too.

How rude!
