Washington welfare benefits cashed at strip clubs

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- State. Sen. Mike Carrell of Lakewood is sponsoring a bill to prevent the use of Washington's welfare cash cards from being used at strip clubs, tattoo parlors, gun shops and taverns.
Carrell says an investigation by Seattle TV station KING found the benefit cards are being misused.
The station earlier found that about $2 million in welfare cash was withdrawn in one year at casinos. The Department of Social and Health Services asked casinos to block the use of the cards at their ATMs. Most have complied. Gambling with welfare cash is illegal.
Now, KING has found the welfare benefits - known as EBT cards - are being cashed at strip clubs and sex shops. DSHS Secretary Susan Dreyfus agrees it's time to tighten restrictions.

Ga. Welfare Dollars Spent At Popular Vacation Spots
CBS Atlanta ^
A CBS Atlanta investigation revealed some of Georgia's poorest spent their welfare dollars at popular vacation destinations including Las Vegas, California and the Virgin Islands. CBS Atlanta requested a list of every withdraw and expenditure made in 2010 by welfare recipients who receive cash assistance. According to CBS Atlanta's calculations, more than $50 million was used by beneficiaries of the state's TANF program in 2010. TANF stands for Temporary Assistance For Needy Families. Records show $1 million was spent out-of-state. Thousands of dollars were spent in California, Las Vegas and New York, according to the documents. They also revealed Georgia's welfare recipients used nearly $600 in Puerto Rico and $520 in St. Croix, Virgin Islands. The expenditures may be point-of-sale purchases or ATM withdraws with the government-issued debit card. CBS Atlanta found one recipient spent $60 at Tattoo Addiction in Venice Beach, Calif. Another recipient either withdrew or spent $200 at a luxury resort on Las Vegas Boulevard in Las Vegas.

I dont get it. Welfare is a small amount right? How much is paid to someone who is on welfare?
And in a strip club? There should barely be enough for food and shelter?
