Obama Refers To Himself As "The Gipper" In Farewell To Gibbs
President Obama recounts an anecdote about the 2004 Democratic National Convention at White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs' final press briefing:
"The most challenging problem was what tie to wear. And this went up to the very last minute. I mean, 10 minutes before we were about to go on stage we were still having an argument about ties. I had bought five, six ties. And Michelle didn't like any of them, Axelrod didn't like a couple of them -- him being one of the best dressed men in the world. So we really valued his opinion.
"And then somebody -- I don't remember who it was -- turned and said, 'You know what? What about Gibbs' tie? What about Gibbs' tie? That might look good.' And, frankly, Robert didn't want to give it up because he thought he looked really good in the tie. But eventually he was willing to take one for the gipper, and so he took off his tie, and I put it on. And that's the tie that I wore at the national convention."
-
you do know he was playing him in a movie. george gipp was the gipper, George was athlete at the university of notre dame
-
I don't see Obama referring to himself as the Gipper. I see a phrase of speech there that doesn't signify Obama in any way.
You = FAIL
-
Read it again dope. And before this turns into another embarrassing thread for you like the gas prices one, just stfu now before you make it worse for yourself troll.
-
I read it.
You obviously didn't understand it. No surprise. In your rush to post something whine and cry about it, common sense was once again ignored.
Welcome to Friday Night FAIL.
While most people are out hanging with friends, hitting up the scene, taking in a movie, or other real life activities, the little no life having crybaby that you are was sitting here making one more useless thread that backfired on you.

::) ::)
Its only a mere coincidence that the press has been 24/7 reporting Obamas' admiration of Reagan, his reading Reagans' biograpghy, Time putting thw two side by side, and this statement.
You = fucking idiot.
-
yes, obama wasn't referring to himself as the gipper... thread title fail on this one... but nonetheless you've been on a good streak lately.
how about a new thread on that interview about a kenyan born senator? It was 2002 or 2004 right? newspaper article.
-
Obama has always said he admired Reagan.

Obama has always admired Reagan and said so in debates as well as his books. I guess you forgot that.

I remember that. But the 2 aren't related. He didn't claim to be the gipper, as your thread title references. You've been great lately with accuracy. Just shrug this one off and find that obama newspaper article again!
-
But eventually he was willing to take one for the gipper, and so he took off his tie, and I put it on.

So who was "the gipper" here? Axelrod?
-
Yes, it appears to me that's exactly what he did:
-
Take one for "The Gipper" was referring to Obama needing a tie before the convention speech. Gibbs took his off meaning "do this for "the gipper" i.e. Obama in this case needing the tie.
Yeah, and everyone runs around using that phrase. I'm sure all you guys in the bar looking at the fat chick tell your friend "take one for the gipper" and go with the fat chick so I can get with the hottie. ::) ::)
-
You know if it was a true kind of admiration for Reagan with Obama saying that, I don't think it would matter. But I honestly don't buy jack shit coming out of his mouth. He's sold out on everything he ran on...... I got no respect left for the guy... For all I know he tossed that name in their for personal gain and not admiration.
IMO Reagan is overrated anyway.

relax, you got this one right. He clearly refered to himself as the gipper saying that. Not that I think it's very important, but you're right.

Lurkertroll jumped the shark again.
-
refers to himself as "The Gipper" george gipp ;D
-
Sure did. Did you? Which is it? You didn't read it or you didn't understand it?
Again, reading comprehension is a daily struggle for you isn't it? Since apparently you are suffering from something in the head, I can assume you missed the response I gave regarding this prior. So just to help you out a little bit I will quote it again.
Wallowing in the FAIL aren't you?
"willing to take one for the gipper"
So if they had used the phrase "willing to take one for the team", you would be crying about Obama refering to himself as the team. As it stands, I don't see a single instance in there where Obama refers to himself as the gipper in any personal sense. Where you saw that or came to that conclusion, only the voices in your head know. You obviously struggle with basic reading comprehension don't you?
Maybe you can come up with better material to post while spending Saturday night alone in front of the computer again.
-
Lurkertroll jumped the shark again.
Bullshit. This is one more thread that blew up in your face and having it hacked up for your benefit isn't really making you look any smarter either.
That previous link you posted to the LA Times does absolutely NOTHING to support your cryfest here. Not a single mention in that or the original post you quoted where Obama made a personal reference to him being the gipper.
Keep trying, maybe you will have better luck on your future threads.
-
What an idiot you are. This really takes the cake if you cant see him referring to himself as the "The Gipper" in needing the tie before the speech and asking Gibbs to take his tie off and give it to him.

Keep crying and backpedaling. So far, I am not the only one that has the same thing.
Good luck on your Saturday night internet session. Let's hope those threads turn out better for you than this one.

Yeah, ok.

He didnt use that phrase you moron. He specifically said "The Gipper" in referring to himself needing a tie before the speech.
Damn you are stupid.
-
So how did the saying come about? Well, there's the sad part of the story. It seems that Gipp caught a throat infection during one of his final football games at Notre Dame. He died a few weeks later at the age of 25. Just before his death, he told Coach Rockne, "Some time, Rock, when the team is up against it, when things are wrong and the breaks are beating the boys - tell them to go in there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock. But I'll know about it, and I'll be happy."

dude, you're wrong on this, look at the video posted above. You're dead wrong and just making an ass of yourself over something that is lame and doesn't even matter. In the context he spoke, he puts himself as the gipper. It's over, you lose, it's done... move on.

If you believe the same so be it. Bottom line is, it is used as a phrase and not a personal reference.
If you can't see that, that is your problem, not mine.
-
Yes, it appears to me that's exactly what he did:
Yeah, cause everyone uses the phrase in everyday talk "take one for the gipper" ha ha ha ha.
-
He didnt use that phrase you moron. He specifically said "The Gipper" in referring to himself needing a tie before the speech.
Damn you are stupid.
Keep crying about the tie aren't you? Doesn't matter if he needed a tie or a blow job from Nancy Reagan before the speech, it was not a personal reference.
And you calling someone stupid? HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA HAHAAAAA
-

Ha ha ha ha - yes he did! He needed the damn tie that himself put on. The "Team" did not need a tie, "Obama" needed a tie.
-
Yeah, cause everyone uses the phrase in everyday talk "take one for the gipper" ha ha ha ha.
Yeah... because Reagan always needed a tie before a speech too?
::)
Your own bullshit works against you. Again.
-

Bro - you got owned again - just move on. You lost, get over it.
-
your right, but it has nothing to do with reagan
You ASSume right. And at this level of politics, you shouldn't ASSume anything unless you really do want to be an ASS. these guys know what they're saying and why they're saying it and the meaning of what they're saying.
-

Bro - you lost - get over it. Its no big deal - no the first time for you, certainly not the last either.

you do know the difference between real life and the movies. reagan was an actor playing a movie role
-
Dude you are still beyond delusional in your crying and whining that basic read skills are compromised.
Not a new thing with you.
Yawn, move on, you lost.
-
You ASSume right. And at this level of politics, you shouldn't ASSume anything unless you really do want to be an ASS. these guys know what they're saying and why they're saying it and the meaning of what they're saying.
agree so we should stop assuming he met reagan ;D

lurker, bring some substance to these posts otherwise there is no point to them being here.

Obama's long held admiration for Reagan is well known.

I did. As evident in the one I originally posted and then quoted again after it was deleted.
::)
-
Obama's long held admiration for Reagan is well known.
I don't see that it's a problem if it's an admiration for Reagan. If he had said that being a fan of Reagan, I don't think that would be a problem. but I doubt it's true anyway. this is calculated bullshit and I don't believe anything from him at this point.
-
He was pretty clearly referring to himself as the Gipper. What a stupid argument. ::)

I think lurker just saw my name attached to the thread and decided to go on the attack before reading the quote and watching the vid.
No biggie, wont be the last time this happens.
With regard to the story, I dont believe it one bit, Obama never said this, 2004, he is making shit up now so he can attach himself to the Reagan love going around.
-
Sounds to me like he's talking about himself. But, let's face it, this is criticism is just as dumb as when they jump on Palin for the most minute, irrelevant, trivial bullshit.
-

I thought it was interesting in light of all of the Reagan stuff and comparisons we have had over the last few weeks that he would say this. Its not a coincidence, Its not a criticism as much as it is telling of how he is trying to position himself by tossing these things out to the public.

that was back in 2004, you should just leave this tread alone :D
