Title: People brainwashed into supporting capitalism
Post by: Firemuscle on April 11, 2011, 06:19:21 PM
 I'm not a communist. And I don't hate capitalism.

But. It's funny to me to see how so many Americans have a blind hatred for Communism. And a sheep-like, unbreakable support for capitalism.

This is what the elites have shoved down our throats. This is the shit people have swallowed. The media pounded into our heads that Capitalism is the best system, and Communism is shite. And most Americans just swallowed it without thinking about it.

Capitalism is a good system in some ways. But it's got it's problems.

Communism is similar. Good in some ways, flawed in other ways.

Just think about it with an open mind instead of being mindless.

 I've studied politics a lot.

Usually people who study politics a lot realize that Communism is not evil or horrible. It's just an economic system, and there are elements of communism in every countrie's economy, including America's.

Why do people have such a hate for Communism? It just seems like groupthinking and herd mentality. People lost in the social conditioning that they have been exposed to since they were children.

communism as it's conceived and written has never been tried on a large scale successfully, (kind of like christianity as conceived by jesus  ;) )

When you consider the gulags, the mass starvation the tens of millions of its own people that it has killed... if you study history, as leafy mentiones, it kind of puts things in perspective

its easy to smoke a little weed and live in your tiny little world and think you are some kind of out of the box thinker whoes totallty open to doing the whole moral equivalence thing

most of us get over that shit when we graduate college ;)

The problem isn't capitalism it's how the we've implemented it.  Capitalism is by far the best economic system around, it brings poor countries from poverty into wealth, frees people from opression allowing them to flourish on every level.  Don't even start on socialism, it's by far the WORST system out there.  Just look at the down turn of our own country as we've gone to near pure capitalism to socialism.

The problems with Communism related to totalitarianism and tyranny could easily be avoided in the future.

Also, many, many Capitalist countries are all fucked up with atrocities and genocides and all that.

Capitalism kills lots and lots and lots of people too. But in capitalism, the ones who get screwed are those poor brown and black people in foreign countries. And Americans who get screwed by capitalism are branded as "lazy, stupid, free-loaders" etc.

It's all just an ignorant little game in which black and white thinking is the norm when there is really a huge grey area.

There are a few major problems with capitalism.

First. It is horrible for the environment. If things continue as they are, a global capitalist system with over 8 million people consuming, we are gonna pollute ourselves into oblivion and use up the world's resources very soon.

Second. In Capitalism lots of people get screwed. Lots of people get screwed hard. But they are villified by the masses and looked down upon. A convienant way to keep a clear conscious I suppose.

Communism has some major problems too. It's vulnerable to totalitarianism and abuse of power. Sometimes the government gets too heavy in Communist countries. These are problems.

 Both system have their problems.....

Dude so what? Bachelors aren't that hard to get. Even if you got it in political science, still doesnt mean much. I've met a bunch of dumbasses in the political science department.

By the way, you should have had this "original" thought about 13 years ago.

Capitalism definitely pollutes the environment a lot because it is the system of mass consumption and fierce competion.

Under Communist economic systems, waste and pollution are reduced in almost every area.

Seriously man, you are just ignorant if you don't know this. This is basic stuff that is universally accepted as truth.

What the fuck is happening in the USA right now? Seems like everyone is turning in total conservatives??? I guess Obama is pissing everyone off and making them move to the right.

The fuck are you talking about? China is well on their way to being the biggest polluters on the planet, if they haven't already assumed that title. They have next to no regulation of pollution and the air in many of the largest Chinese cities is so ridiculously polluted that it's almost impossible to breathe on bad days.

Yeah, communists really take care of the environment.  ::)

The USA hates Communism because Communist countries don't "play ball" with the US.

THAT is why the USA brainwashes it's citizens into hating Communism.

I'd like to say that I don't support Communism and I think pure Communism is a bad system.

But, I think the best system would be a blend of the best aspects and Communism and Capitalism.

Pure, 100% free market Capitalism is bad. There needs to be some Communist elements to it to keep it from become totally corrupt and keep the masive inequalites from getting out of control.

SweetMuscles is right

I never said anything about this being my original thought. When did I say that?

In the Communist/Capitalist debate there are only 3 main sides.

 1. You have the hardline Commies, the people you all think are the devil.

 2. You have the hardline Capitalists, which is what most of you all are.

 3. And then you have the moderates who see the good and bad in both sides. They think the best system incorparates elements of both systems. THIS is where i'm at.

The US does have a lot of socialist things going on. It's been like that for the past century at least.

But as far as the people's beliefs and attitudes, it's hardline Capitalist in the US. And if you talk about Commuism at all you get labeled in a very bad way.

The privatization of health care is a good example of how Capitalism sometimes fails. Health care should be controlled by the Gov.

The U.S. Military is a socialist/communist organization, run by the US gov. Do you hate the U.S. Military?  :o That's very unpatriotic.

 It's not quite that simple.

But as far as people's beliefs in general. 95% of the people fit into one of these 3 areas.

Macroeconomics has Communism on one end of the spectrum and Capitalism on the other end of the spectrum. It's a fairly simple and linear progression.

When you get into microeconomics it gets more complex. But macroeconomics are pretty simple.

america (capitalism)  is FAR better than any communistic state (russia, cuba, china)

live in china or cuba for a few years, you may start to think differently.

america IS a hybrid of capitalism (i make money by working hard), but also semi-socialistic (they take my hard earned money and give it to those who don;t work for whatever reason).

The environmental situation isn't the fault of capitalism, that's like saying obesity is the fault of capitalism. Second, the biggest problem with both socialism and communism is that they force individuals to be motivated by the perceived well being of other individuals, but other individuals never actually end up feeling good or being happy if they don't support themselves and earn their respect of others by being active contributing members of society. Giving people good lives never ends up in people living happy lives.  I've never experienced a communist society, but socialism today(and definitely yesteryear) makes me want to scratch my friggin eyes out.

Both systems bring out the worst qualities in humans
Communism - laziness
Capitalism - greed
Only one of those qualities can be used to motivate people though and that's greed. So despite all of Capitalism's short comings and ugliest sides, it's the only proven economic system that encourages forward progress.

This is the bottom line. My pops lived in communist Europe 60s-80s and he hated it and all the communist supporters because no matter how hard you worked you could never get ahead. Also he said pretty much all people were lazy and did the minimum.

When he came stateside he realized his potential through his work and made a pretty nice life for himself.

The extremes of capitalism are shitty too. Look at the banks and some corporations...you have to be blind to say they aren't greedy and full of corruption.

I think the people who are anti-capitalism are the people who are victims of the system... i.e. the lazy and too stupid to get ahead.
If you're aveage intelligence with decent work ethic, capitalism will work in you favor.

Just think about it with an open mind instead of being mindless.

I guess Communism would be OK if they could avoid murdering tens of millions of their own people. Then Russia, China and North Korea would be a paradise on earth. Ever see a satellite image of North Korea and South Korea? One side in total darkness except the capital. The other vibrant and alive. Remember Cuba before Castro? Was a resort town.

Do you have a single example where Communism was succeeded? Why do you want a government controlled economy? Remember the bread and cheese lines in the Soviet Union? There was a reason why East Germany constructed a wall. Was it to keep the West Germans from rushing in and enjoying their lavish life style? If the East Germans didn't shoot those trying to get out of the state prison they constructed the people would have emptied the country. Why would you want to surrender more of your freedoms to the government? The reason why China has become a power house is that although they are still a totalitarian society they have moved more and more to a free market economy. Capitalism.

In any transaction between a buyer and a seller: be it shoes, cars or labor, the only ones who should call the shots are those actually involved in the transaction. When a third party, who bears none of the costs or consequences of the transaction, starts dictating unilaterally what one is allowed to charge or spend then that's when you run into problems.

In terms of pure body count, Communism was the most evil empire that ever existed on this planet. Did you know that Mao outlawed humor? That they all had to dress the same? He killed more of his own people then all the previous wars combined in our countries history? Say in Russia what you say about this country and you disappear.

Seriously, you surprise me. Just compare the life styles and the freedoms. Like night and day. Heaven and hell.

Like I said, Pure Communism is usually very bad for a country.

Pure Communism is GREAT on a small scale, like a village or isolated community. But on a national scale it's not too good.

HERE'S MY POINT. Extreme Communism and extreme Capitalism are both flawed. The best system would be a hybrid of both.

The U.S. system is pretty good. But it has a few big problems. Like the privatization of health care, the corruption, the inequality.

I just don't understand why everyone love Capitalism so much on this forum, and there's this kind of closed minded and blind support for Capitalism by lots of people who don't know shit about economics.

I guess I would love Capitalism too if I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth and benefitted from it all my life.

Why do people support a free market, i.e., capitalism? Because no other system has come close to producing the high standard of living we enjoy and take for granted. Capitalism doesn't make you greedy it motivates you to do something. Why is it greedy to what to improve your lot in life and standard of living? Greed is wanting only to succeed yourself and others to fail. You want everything and want the rest to have nothing. In America, contrary what people seem to think, we actually want others to be successful. They are the ones who grow the economy and provide jobs. Do you resent those that have built a successful business and provided a good and/or service that people actually want? They are the ones that increase the standard of living and grow wealth. The government CANNOT created wealth. They can only redistribute it, confiscate it, and in some cases destroy it by regulations. WHY would you want to turn over more of your freedoms to the government?

You think air conditioning, refrigeration, automobiles, food in the grocery stores, variety of clothes for cheap, microwave ovens.... the list goes on and on. None of this innovation occurs in a planned economy.

You don't seem to realize that in a Communist country you have no middle class. You have the small percentage that are very rich and the majority are poor. Only in a capitalist economy can a poor person rise above his class and become well off or even rich. You think Coach would be making six figures living in one of the most upper class areas in California if he live in North Korea, Middle East or any other government controlled economy?

You have it completely the opposite. Communism is good only if you are born into a privilege class. The only people who romanticize Communism are those that haven't lived under it's oppressive boot. My brother hosted an East German in a student exchanged program and had her parents and grandparents over for a visit. They remarked that one of the things that most struck them was when they walked into a grocery store. They said you have everything. The colors in the produce section was mind boggling. Fruits of all kind.

Imagine that, "colors in the produce section." You... WE, take so much for granted here.

BFRS, you started a thread indicating that you might be moving to Texas. Why would you want to come back here? OK, you got a good job opportunity. Why no job opportunities in Russia, Belarus, Vietnam, Kazakhstan? Why haven't you gotten any job opportunities in a Communist country? If you did, would you go? Cuba ain't Japan, my friend.

I know all this stuff you're telling me already and I agree with a lot of it.

People aren't understanding what i'm saying here. I'm not supporting Communism. What I am saying is that people are WAY too gung ho in blind support of Capitalism. People have this kind of militant support for capitalism, I don't see why it's necessary. And I see it damaging the US in several ways, like stalling health care reform and allowing a lot of the deregulations that helped lead us into the 2008 financial crisis.

People immedietal interpretted that as meaning that I support Communism. That's not where i'm coming from. I just think a lot of people of closed mindedly Capitalist. Just like religion, or political parties, some people just blindly support it with this intensity that makes them closed minded.

I lived in China for 6 months and visited like 3 times, seen a lot of it. It is economically Capitalist. Modern China is not economically Communist at all really.

I have been to lots of rural areas in Asia and South America. Many of these places are tribal. Meaning they exist without much oversight at all from the federal government. So the people live communally and it works great for them.

If people just stopped blindly supporting Capitalism then we could evolve forward.

As for innovation. Yes Capitalism is great at making people innovate and work hard and well, that's a good thing about it.

if you are a politician the people can know in real time what you are up to, who are you meeting for dinner, who do you talk to, your financial situation, IN REAL TIME

cops, in real time see how they act, see how they talk between themselves REAL TIME audio video

its not the rich mans fault or the poor mans fault its the fault of greedy junk politicians

BTW BlackFlag, you talk about hardcore capitalist and hardcore communist implying there's a middle of the road here. Can you give me an example of a moderate Communist country?

And I believe you are simply wrong saying everyone, or most, is gung ho about capitalism. It's actually quite the opposite. Our country has grown more and more socialist as time goes one. The role of government plays a bigger and bigger role in our lives and takes more and more of our money and spend more and more of our money. That's the fight that is going on right now.

Compare society now to say, the 1950s. The idea that the government will mandate what kind of light bulb you can use, how much water is allowed in a flush toilet, whether you can allow smoking in you place of business... the list goes on and on.

Why do tax payers have to, be force to, support the National Endowment of Arts or PBS? There's nothing wrong with art or Sesame Street but why should a welder, a bus driver, a McDonalds manager, a grocer be forced to support it. Is that really the role of the government? If people really want these things they will support it and it will thrive. Just like music, movies and other TV programs that are successful in the free market. If your painting or TV show sucks nobody will support it and it will disappear -- as it should in a free market capitalist economy.

Edit: Often times people will conflate Communism with Socialism. One is more of a political system and the other an economic system.

I'm old enough to be your father but I think I could hang with you (for around 30 minutes). We don't agree on everything but you have a great personality, quick wit, and awesome sense of humor.

Carry on.

What happens is communism becomes a dictatorship.  All for greed.
