Starting June 1, UFC and Strikeforce fighters will be divided into four categories, based on how many Twitter followers they currently have. At the end of each quarter, three fighters from each category will be awarded a $5,000 bonus. The three winners will be based on who has gained the most followers since the start of the quarter, who gained the highest percentage of new followers and who wrote the most creative tweets. White will be the judge of the last category.
At the conclusion of a full calendar year, the UFC will end up paying $240,000 a year to its fighters for their Twitter usage.

Stupid.
IDK why, but stupid.
-
Attention should be on fights, not the computer and how many fans one has imo.
-
It's just a way to advertise for free. The more people that follow fighters, the more they will know about up and coming events...

How can anyone say this is a stupid or worthless way of marketing?
As a fighter, you have a FREE, real-time, unedited way to communicate what you want to your fans, with little effort.
No hassle with interviews or things getting taken out of context and fans can interact with you in real-time as well.
Think about this...When Dana gives away free tickets, without any prior knowledge by his fans, he 'tweets' where he is to his fans/followers, and literally within 30 seconds or less, people show up to get their free tickets. Just a brief text from his phone, and literally millions of INTERESTED people hear him. FOR FREE!
Very smart by the UFC to encourage this technology.
