Tough week for Tea Party ends with fizzling rally
By JOHN O’CONNOR

Governor Nikki Haley speaks during a meeting of the Tea Party in Columbia Thursday night at the Statehouse. A.L. Geddings and Louise Geddings of Columbia were representative of the low turnout. Turnout was low at the event due to Donald Trump canceling his expected appearance.
The Columbia Tea Party went from Donald Trump to jilted chump after the celebrity businessman canceled his appearance at Thursday’s State House rally, and state legislators approved tax breaks and spending that the group opposed.
Trump’s decision to not enter the GOP presidential race left local Tea Party leaders stewing about the way they had been treated. But about 30 people were on hand Thursday to thank Gov. Nikki Haley, lawmakers and activists for their work to require more on-the-record Legislative votes.
It was all part of a tough week for the state’s Tea Party movement.
On Wednesday, the S.C. House reversed course and approved a controversial sales tax break for online retailer Amazon. Thursday, the S.C. Senate voted down a proposal that would have rebated any better-than-expected state tax collections to income tax filers.
Columbia Tea Party chairman Allen Olson expected as many as 2,000 would have attended Thursday’s rally had Trump been there. But The Donald, a favorite of many who attended the group’s Tax Day rally with U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., elected to not run and dropped the rally from his schedule.

“It was a kick in the gut, but it gives you a chance to regroup,” said Olson. “He’s a businessman. He showed his worth.”
Olson said the legislative losses will motivate Tea Party members, adding they will turn their focus now on a bill to cap punitive damages in lawsuits and other legislative issues.
Other Tea Party activists agreed.
Haley told the meeting she was forming the Governor’s Tea Party Coalition to be run from her office. The group will be made up of volunteers who will work with Haley on issues, advocacy and grass-roots organizing, spokesman Rob Godfrey said.
Philip Stanley came to Thursday’s rally from Asheville, N.C., in hopes of seeing Trump but said he was pleased to learn Haley would headline the event instead.
Stanley said he respected Trump for directly questioning President Barack Obama about his birth certificate without fear of being labeled with “the R word” for racist. (Obama subsequently produced his long-form birth certificate, and Stanley said Thursday that he did not dispute the president’s U.S. citizenship.)
“I never thought he was serious,” Stanley said of Trump. “He’s a promoter. ... Then, I heard Nikki Haley was here. That’s almost as good.”

tea party definitely peaked a while back.

I guess you didt see the interview
-
I guess you didt see the interview
I did, you just view it from a insane person's point of view, you already have your mind made up what you see the outcome to be, you don't actually analyze what you just saw.
-
As opposed to you, doing the same thing, only in the opposite direction.
-
Ha ha ha - Benny spamming the gossip board now with his garbage since he goets wned royally on the pol board every ten seconds.
-
This was his true intention all along with all that birth certificate crap. Mission accomplished for Trump.

that's been my CT for a month.
An NBC employee... lifetime liberal positions... ends up getting an extension for his show for another season...
completely legitimizes obama in the eyes of america... and trump (more than perhaps anyone else on earth) just doesn't give a shit what people think.
If it were anyone else, Repubs would be calling CT on it. No way a lifetime lib/NBC employee gets these kinds of results 9which benefit obama top to bottom) without it being a plot lol...
-
Kloppenberg approves of this thread.
-
if Jane fonda was an NBC tv star...
a lifetime liberal with lots of lib political history...
and she ran a conspiracy-theory based anti-Obama campaign...
and ended up taking tons of attention off Obama's economic policies - while legitimizing his birth (which has actual Qs that need looked at)...
and ended up with a $60 mil TV contract for her trouble...
Holy crap, people would be screaming about it being staged. But Trump wouldn't do that, right guys? ;) Identical actions, identical lifetime political ideology... but since you're emotionally tied to trump, you cannot accept this possibility.

Just becausse people are not in the streets does not mean things are not happening. 240 makes me laugh. He still thinks bama is popular and that his messeiah has some secret plan for the economy.
So long as the gop runs romeny huntsman cain daniels obama is a goner.
People are sick to death of this disgusting cabal in dc. Just in court yesterday I heard liberal jews screaming about why bama is not facing a primary. Turnout for bama is going to suck and there will be massive armies of people waiting to get him the hell out there.

You're all over the place on this one man. Now you think Romney will beat Obama? You are critical of Obamacare yet now you think Romney has a chance to beat him? huh? Romney may be huge with the Mormons but he looks and sounds like a used car salesman to everyone else.
The reality is most people are stupid, stupid, stupid. I predict here and now, Obama wins by another landslide.
-
My first and foremost concern is getting bama out of office, not getting the perfect gop candidate. I can't stand romney but will vote him over bama in a heartbeat, same for madoff vandersloot etc.
-
The reality is most people are stupid, stupid, stupid.
You sound like TA. :-\
-
Again - if for no other issue - the supreme court alone is reason enough to vote for the gop candidate. Heller was 5 4 dsmr w a lot of other close ones.
If bama gets two more kagans on the bench - you do the math.
-

wow.. so you get mad when he invites common to the white house but you openly admit that would vote for those 2... man you must really love your country ::)
-
Supreme Court is one of my many issues. Too many issues on a 5 4 basis that two more kagans on the court will destroy.
Any gop candidate will make better sc picks than bama.
-
You're all over the place on this one man. Now you think Romney will beat Obama?
33 has said for months that Romney and t-paw will roll over and let obama win.
-
They might. But the public still might go for them simply to get bama the hell out of there.
Again 2 more kagans on the supreme court - think about that.
-

yeah .... that would be good, we would have like what gay marriage OMG NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO what else are you scared of??? Religious crazy topics and other things? Plz name.

The wretchis against the 2nd amend, said thegovt can tell everyone what to eat, will support obamacare, takes a view of the commerce clause that is insane, and is a tyrant in her own right.
I will take scalia, thomas, alito, roberts, over that disgusting slob any day.

lol she is not against the 2nd amendment, I am sure the NRA has told you that because they want more money and memberships, how can they survive without fear mongering. All they say is Obama wants your guns and Obama has never even talked about gun control legislation, he hasn't even touch it LOL! Still selling memberships on lies and fear.
Government run healthcare is good for the middle class and lower class, the rich well they wouldn't like it because they wouln't get treated "specially" no one is special, they are created equal, if you read the bible. Commerce clause again good, all this is good, keep greed and capitalism in check which has put us in this huge depression.

Fixed.
How is corporate welfare and welfare for the rich capitalism? Sounds like you are putting the standard 'liberal' slant on things.

You sound like TA. :-\
It's probably one of the very few things we agree on.
Do you think history has proven different? Don't let the contributions of a small minority fool you. Next time you go out pay close attention to the people around you. Fumbling, bumbling, slow, careless and clueless. Half the time I'm having a conversation with someone I just met, I'm thinking of a way to excuse myself from their presence. George Carlin nailed it.

Try living in the tower of babyl otherwise known as nyc and see how you feel!

I have the good fortune to experience people of all income and net worth levels, from dirt poor to very wealthy, from uneducated to highly educated, young and old. And I've been to nearly every state in the country.
You couldn't be more wrong. The American people are smart, resourceful, decent, hardworking folks. They don't vote, but voter apathy doesn't make people stupid. There are people who aren't very bright, but they are not the majority. There are people who break the law, and they're a minority.
I think people like you and TA who walk around thinking you are smarter than the average person you meet on the street are arrogant fools. Sorry.
What I've learned is that people are not stupid solely because they have a different viewpoint. Stupidity is a little more complex than that. I'm o.k. with people who think differently than I do. That's why I have great relationships with people who still love Obama, even though I think Obama is horrible.

What exactly are "corporate welfare" and "welfare for the rich"?
Well, as an example, General Motors, got bailed out, that is corporate welfare.

What I don't get is that you have no issues with abuse of state authority and do not think there is any significant corruption in government? ???
-

Only if they didn't pay the money back. I agree taxpayer money given to businesses is corporate welfare, but I don't include tax breaks in that category. Do you?
What about "welfare for the rich"? What is that?
-
great post
Thanks.

Welfare for the rich: the various Wallstreet companies that got bailed out, they called in favours and got bailed out even though they should have failed for their mistakes. I don't include tax breaks because I think taxes should always be lowered for everyone, the lower, the better.

Isn't that "corporate welfare"? I understood your use of the phrase "the rich" to mean individuals, but correct me if I'm wrong.

I suppose I do use it interchangeably. Big business calling in favours from the government is 'welfare for the rich' or 'coporate welfare', however you want to term it. But one thing is for sure, that's not capitalism.
-
Damn right - welfare for the rich is actually worse than welfare for the poor imho.
Bad businesses need to fail and go away - not be propped up by govt contracts and favors.
-

Understood. I don't agree with government handouts. I was opposed to TARP. I was opposed to the stimulus.
I agree that's not how capitalism should work. Failure is part of the system.
-

Actually I'm not arrogant, I don't claim to have all the answers and I'm humble enough to admit when I'm wrong. I can name quite a few posters on here who have NEVER admit ed to being wrong, they seem to be experts on just about every topic.
I agree that the general public is hard working, (hardworking doesn't equate to smart), and decent overall but they are not intelligent where and when it counts. Are they resourceful? I don't know, in what way are we talking about? They aren't smart with their money and statistics have shown us that. Its only when they are at risk of losing it ALL do they finally wake up...kinda. I find the general public to be extremely gullible, naive and totally apathetic to things that really matter. I think a good gauge in judgeing the publics intelligence is politics because its when the public gets to actively participate in its own destiny. Look at what we have in the White house now. Would an intelligent group of people be that easily fooled? The current political spectrum indicates that the general public is stupid, despite what you say. Look at our "leaders". They are a perfect gauge as to where the consciousness of the public is and it's in a coma.
Here's just one example. We have a former Federal Reserve director running for president, the same guy that doesn't have a problem using tax payer money to buy partial ownership of banks and corporations. The co opted Tea Party has been the most vocal free market, anti socialist group around in quite some time, (at least that's what all their signs suggest they believe in), yet they embrace the same individual who is the complete opposite of what they want us to believe they stand for! Why are they promoting a person that voted for bailouts, when a free market, anti socialist follower doesn't advocate that at all? The Fed is the most powerful institution in the country, the decisions it makes can make or break the people of the country and so far it's track record is terrible, yet again, the public is falling over itself for one of its former boneheads.
That is just one example, but its a serious issue and I can think of hundreds of other issues as serious as this where the outcome was similar. An intelligent society would never allow this to happen for this long.

I don't know you, but the mindset you describe is pretty arrogant. I have learned, and continue to learn, quite a bit from people who are less educated than me, who make less money, etc. The vast majority of people bring a lot to the table, often with different strengths. That's part of what makes this country so great.
For example, one of my professors said: "I know a lot about a few things, and nothing about a lot of things." I think that is true of most people. I use that phrase all the time. It's certainly true of me.
So, just because someone isn't as informed about a particular political issue as you are, doesn't mean the person is stupid. They are exercising their freedom to stay tangentially involved, just like you are exercising your freedom to become intimately involved in the political process.
There is definitely an intelligence component of hard work. Smart people have a good work ethic, and most of the country works hard.
I agree many people are not responsible with money and finances. Does that mean most people are stupid? No. It just means they are poor money managers. That's partly the fault of parents who haven't taught their kids how to be responsible (although once they become adults, it's out of the parents' control). Trying to teach some of my kids how to manage money has been painful.
You gave me an example of one issue that you disagree with regarding Cain. Your complaint is unreasonable and inconsistent. I think the best thing Cain brings to the table is straight talk and successful business experience from outside the beltway. That's what DC needs. He's not perfect. No candidate is. But to call people stupid because they support him, solely because you disagree with him on one issue is pretty shortsighted.
And I call your position inconsistent, because you could make the same argument about Ron Paul. He's a devout Christian. He's pro life. He believes the Constitution was divinely inspired. I doubt you agree with those positions. Yet I doubt you would call people stupid who support him despite those positions.
One thing I will say, is I'm not happy with the overall quality of candidates who run for president. I really dislike having to vote against, rather than for, a candidate. I don't like picking the evil of two lessers.
I'm going to create a thread about this.
