Title: Overeem - not impressed
Post by: kevcat on June 19, 2011, 02:20:40 AM
I think Overeem carried ALOT of hype into this fight and well, lets be honest he sucked.People can say 'But Werdum was going to ground all the time so Overeem couldnt do much ', but Werum clearly outstruck this 'world class striker'.He probably didnt hurt Overeem but landing more is what should count in a judged fight IMO. Wasnt really a great fight and well for everyone who says Overeems the top HW in the world i have major doubts.JDS recently looked alot better on his feet for a start.....opinions? :)

Your right.  I would say that a couple of Werdum's knees/punches actually were doing some decent damage. If any decent striker like Dos Santos hit him with shots like that, he will get beat.   He definately had his opportunities to strike with Werdum but didn't.  He also looked way too gassed for not doing much.

Due to each fighter's strategy this wasn't going to be an exciting fight.  One fighter wanted it on the ground and the other wanted to stand.  Overeem didn't want to make the mistake he did the first time around or the mistake that Fedor made.  He didn't and won.  He allowed Werdum to land some strikes because he was more worried about Werdum taking him down.  In a fight against Dos Santos, Overeem would be much less worried about getting submitted so he may be able to be more effective striking or at the very least defending strikes.

Solid post. Pretty much sums up last nights fight.

As for Alistair, I never liked his stand up AT ALL. MMA or K-1.

In K-1 he's not "technical" AT ALL IMO. He's going on sheer brute strength. If Badr Hari was in the last K-1, I bet my paycheck he would have KO'd Overeem a$$.

Those shots Werdum got in on him when he did strike was no fluke. Alistair tries to walk through shots off sheer brute. I think Cain or even Junior Dos would KO Alistair no problem. They just need to make sure they test that big fucker leading up to the fight.

Based on this fight,I would agree.. Standing there and trying to take shots is not a good defense.. Do that against Cain or Dos Santos, and you'll be on the ground ,lids wide open ,eyes rolled back.

What called my attention about this fight is that Overeem didn't dominate Werdum in the stand-up like we all expected. Werdum was clinching and kneeing Overeem pretty hard and the latter was feeling it.

Because of his jiu-jitsu skills, people forget that Werdum is a very big and strong guy. He actually threw Overeem to the ground twice. Werdum ate many jabs and overhands from Overeem and didn't even get bruised.

I actually think that Werdum was feeling Fedor's punches a lot more than Overeem's and avoided standing with Fedor a lot more than with Overeem. This tells me that even though Overeem is a very technical striker, he lacks power especially with his hands. His feet and knees do have power.

LMFAO!!!!!!!Dude spent the entire fight throwing haymakers, technical my ass. Overatedeem should have lost that fight, he spent it going backwards away from Werdumbs strikes. If Werdumb hadn't spent the entire fight taking WWE style "bumps" maybe the judges would have sent the decision his way.

Overall a very boring fight, judging from what I've seen of these guys in Strikeforce, that Bigfoot guy or that other cracker that can't pass a steroid test will both whip Overatedeem.

bigfoot won't have the power to whip overratedeem... the other cracker that can't pass a steroid test might, but it's hard to tell.  Overratedeem was manhandling rogers' pretty easily too.  pretty sure velasquez would murder overratedeem if he fought like he did last night.

How can big nog claim Fedor is better than Mir?  Even though he faced both of them, Mir straight-up whooped his ass and was the first to finish Nog at the time.   Fedor will  go down as the the better fighter, but that is an idiotic statement.

Opinions are subjective, and we are all entitled to one, and it is my firm opinion that Fedor will never be matched as a HW in my lifetime. Mir doesnt come close and would have been demolished as easily as most of his opponents, infact Mir may very well be one of the most overrated fighters of the modern era. Whenever he has had to step up he has been destroyed and left in a bloody mess, for whatever reason he just hasnt been able to establish himself amongst the elite.

This is as pointless discussion as the Yates / Coleman debate as there are always those who swear by either guy, and those who have no opinion on either.

Lol, dude, Mir beat a brain destroyed Nogueira who had just come back from knee and back surgery and was past his prime. Fedor destroyed Big Nog in his prime when Nog was 25 years old and in prime condition. Fedor pretty much toyed with Big Nog and made him a bitch. Watch the three fights between Fedor and Nog and you'll see that Fedor wasn't even struggling. It would be like watching Cain vs a third-tier heavyweight like Congo. The skill gap was enormous, and that is a scary thing because Nog in his prime was a monster. This is the Nog that whipped Randy Couture's ass at UFC 102 with ease. Fedor in 2004 was cartoon superhero good. I think that even today no fighter has reached the skill ceilling Fedor had in 2004. His speed, power, quick decision-making and grappling made him the G.O.A.T. We have never seen a fighter with that power who at the same time was versatile and could grapple like that. Even past his prime in 2011, Fedor can still hold his own against 285 lbs monsters at a bodyweight of 225 lbs and go 1-1 on 2 rounds. Now imagine how much greater he was in 2004.

You do realise they have already fought? Had it not been for Kongo's complete lack of a ground game he may have actually beaten Cain in that fight, he had some rare but effective opportunities & its just a shame he couldnt stay off his back. Each time he looked like he was ready for a title shot he failed at the last hurdle.

100% right. overeem took knees and punches from werdum because he wasn't worried about his striking as much as he was getting taken down. overeem has dominated everyone else. look what he he did to rogers. weather he wins or loses this tournament the guy is dangerous to anyone.
