Title: Who is the most overrated fighter in the history of the sport?
Post by: MindSpin on August 11, 2011, 03:20:31 PM
I think Fedor is the obvious answer.  But there are others like Bisbing, Lesnar and Liddell.  Who do you guys have?

This board is ridiculous, its no wonder almost nobody comes on here. Your statements have no reasoning / justification and in  all honesty all 3 of your choices are so far from being overrated you are now quite the laughing stock. We have tolerated your incessant rambling about Fedor for months but you come across now as someone that genuinely has NO idea about the sport. Simply writing this is an absolute waste of time but i shall view my opinion none the less because you sir are, in simplistic terms, an idiot.

1. chucky is overrated. fed wrestlers with no stand up his whole life. went to pride with dana thinking "chuckies da man" and got spanked by rampage.

2. randy is overrated. fought a bunch of nobodies and scrubs. his testing ground was pride and he didnt have the balls to fight there.

ANYONE IN THE UFC THAT WAS A HEAVY OR LIGHT HEAVY DURING THE PRIDE ERA WAS OVERRATED BECAUSE THEY NEVER TESTED THEMSELVES AGAINST THE BEST

1.LOL at you for even thinking belfort has good standup. he only has fast hands and decent standup.

2. he defeats an ubereem who was only on cabbage juice as a light heavy. lets see him fight a non weight drained ubereem

WHAT DONT YOU GET? IF YOU WERE A HEAVY OR LIGHT HEAVY DURING THE PRIDE ERA AND NEVER FOUGHT THERE YOU HAVENT BEEN TESTED. except chucky, he went their and got his ass handed to him. he was just lucky he never made it to wandy beacuse he would of been stomped to death.

ESPN used to always talk up "Ice Man" then show the highlight of him getting owned beyond belief.  He's the Danica Patrick of MMA.

1> Chuck Lidell
2> Randy Couture

End of list.

Anyone who has the slightest bit of intellectual curiosity on this board ( which means 5 people max) can confirm this as fact, not opinion.

It is remarkable that Randy stayed relevant into his 40's> However, lets be real here, he was a shadow of his former self and deeply flawed as a fighter, especially later on in his career.

Lidell was a tough mofo-- no doubt about it. Every UFC fighter should be forced to be as aggressive as Lidell (ala Pride yellow cards) . However, Rampage exposed what everyone else had always suspected; the man has a jaw made of eggshells. Rampage owned Lidell not once, but twice and to top it off, so did Shogun. It was a happy accident that a totally depleted and over the hill Franklin ko"d Chuck. He helped put MMA on the map, no doubt-- but in terms of actual skill, the man was legendary for a short period of time and then imminently beatable.

fedor is not overrated imo.
Lesnar very much so, big foot also, and cain.... jds will kill cain!
cheik kongo also, the guy is a baby on the ground. shane carwin also overrated..

Kimbo
Lesnar
Franklin
Forrest
Leben
Bisping
Arlovski

All good fighters, but built up to "god" status by Dana/UFC to hype their fight cards when they first started out.

Why the hell would you put Liddell In there. Before his decline he was knocking dudes out left and right. One of the most feared strikers during that time. Stupid list!

First of all, this is all OPINION based.  There are no right/wrong choices.  I put Liddell on there because most people consider him the greatest LHW of all time and some fools even consider him the greatest ever.  He is one of 2-3 MMA fighters that became household names.  Yet, he is far from the greatest LHV ever, let alone the greatest MMA fighter ever ::)  Liddell was good and he should definitely be mentioned in anyones list of the top 10 LHW of all time.  But, truth be told, he was fed a steady diet of wrestlers/grapplers with horrible standup...perfect for his sprawl & brawl style.  When he finally faced someone with better striking, he was KOd. He was overrated...

Totally agree.

Liddell was never overrated.  He was top dog for years.  He KO'd dudes all the time, and based upon his great sprawl, he fared well against wrestlers.  And he faced other strikers all the time.. look at his record.

You can't base him being overrated on the fact that he started getting KO'd at the end of his career.  The guy had his issues outside of the sport.

Honestly MS, this was a bad pick on your part.  Liddell was never overrated.
Title: Re: Who is the most overrated fighter in the history of the sport?

As long as you can justify a pick to yourself for legitimate reasons, then you will always be correct. If MS genuinely sees these flaws with Chucks game as an objective viewer then he is entitled to state that and nobody can tell him he is wrong, however alot of people will view Chuck as one of the all time greats due to his prime fights and what he was able to do to world class fighters.

Thank Granite...some people have a hard time differentiating fact from opinion.  Discussions about greatest of all time or greatest P4P or who is overrated are all opinion based.

He's won nothing since joining the UFC. And no I don't count the split decision "win" over Belcher.

He's also a Judo supremo but never tries takedowns. If he did one Parisyan-style sweep a match he'd at least be some entertainment. Maybe he wants to get cut so he can go back and fight in DREAM?

Minspin has a point. For someone to be over rated it has to be loads of people calling them legends or greats. So his opinion based on lidell is kinda fair, although i dont agree.
People sayin lesnar??? WTF??? ??? I dont think anyones ever said he was one of the greatest fighters ever LOL thats the difference. He has/had alot of fans and nuthuggers but i dont think anyone ever really said he was the greatest ever or anything, get real!
Its hard to have an opinion on this, as alot of guys were amazing in their 20s then dropped big style when they hit mid 30s ( Crocop, Fedor,Wand etc )
Also Bisping??? Once again not many people have ever rated him highly to be 'over rated' ::)

Fedor, Liddell, Couture are all being judged here based on more recent fights. I'm just applying the same logic to Silva. They were all monsters at one point and hardly overrated.

In the UFC? I don't think I've seen the guy win a fight.

Yip point there however he hardly had enough fights in MMA to judge that point properly on a fight, Kimbo was a good Street fighter (no hes sure as hell is no Lenny McLean) but he was a good Fighter on the footpath, in the mma ring with rules against trained fighters not so, theres always too many Variables when and where rules are involved, ive heard hes now trying boxing....might be a bit late in the piece for him there.... However he will have a better chance @ the lower B-Grade Boxers than the same Ranked MMA Fighters.

Wandy is my favorite MMA fighter of all times, but I don't think he has a career left. He is 35 and a very old 35 since he has been fighting for 15 years. He also has suffered severe injuries to both of his knees and to many disks in his spine. He is finished. But...I think he should and can give a severe beating to Chael Sonnen for all the things Sonnen said about him like that he is not good enough to fight in the UFC and that all his fights in PRIDE were fixed. Wrestlers have always had a hard time with Wandy, and he is still a knock out artist. He should train like a madman for 6 months, come back to fight Sonnen, give him the beating of a lifetime and then retire. That would be a golden way to finish his career. Like Coltrane said, he has nothing left to prove. He is almost universally regarded as one of the top 5 MMA fighters of all times in all weight classes.

6 months training for that fight wont help him in any way, as you stated he is an old 35 now so why do you believe he will suddenly be better? This wandy isnt getting anywhere near Sonnen, it would be as good an MMA rape as you would see. If A. Silva couldnt do anything to him - and his stand up is the best you will see in any division - then how is wandy expected to get to him?

Ok, first of all, Silva went into that fight with two broken ribs. Secondly, Sonnen was cheating with steroids. Steroids increase your pain threshold and your will to win. He beat on Anderson for 5 rounds, but did he do any damage? Silva had barely a black eye at the post-fight press conference. Sonnen can't bust a grape. In a rematch, Silva might kill Sonnen. We might actually watch the first death in MMA.

Wandy has some of the best takedown defense among strikers in all divisions, and he is devastating when he gets you in the clinch with those knees. I can see a furious Wandy clinching with Sonnen every time the latter tries to take him down, and kneeing his head in. If Sonnen does take him down, he won't be able to knock Wandy out on the ground-and-pound. He is no Chris Leben. He has no power at all. The guy hits like a primary school girl. What is Sonnen going to do in this fight against Wandy except getting knocked out or TKO's on the ground?

First point: absolutely ridiculous statement to make.

Second point: He doesnt have awesome KO power, but he'll have enough to knock out wandy if hes on top of him hammering down blows repeatedly. You seem to think that even though his punch resistance is at its all time worst he'll still be a superman against Sonnen - why is this? Sonnen only needs to control him on the ground for 3 rounds - which he is more than capable of doing - to get a decision victory and then what will the excuses be?

Wandy overrated ??? Holy fuck, is there anyone who fought in PRIDE who is not overrated to you? Wandy beat Rampage, who just gave Jones the hardest fight in his career. Was he overrated? He also beat Sakuraba, who even Dana White regards as the greatest middleweight ever. Was he overrated? Wandy in his prime was a monster, although that was probably the result of steroids. Maybe drug-free Wandy is overrated.

SUCKMYMUSCLE

That was the hardest fight Jones ever had ???  Bonnar and Gusmao took him to a decision.

I wouldn't say Jones has even had a hard fight from anyone.  But, going to a decision would probably be the hardest if one had to pick.

So? They couldn't even touch him. At least Rampage lended some shots and Jones' eye was black at the end of the fight. You can hold a guy in the clinch on the cage and take the fight to a decision without doing him any damage. Who gives a shit?

Black eye at the end of the fight?  LOL.  Let's see a pic please.  The only damage Jones had, was to his feet, from kicking the shit out of Rampage.

Really?  I've done nearly 10 BJJ matches (won 6).  I train BJJ, wrestling & muay thai 5 days a week.  I watch every UFC, StrikeForce, Bellator & MFC fight. I listen to 4-5 MMA podcasts and read every tidbit of MMA news.  The last time I put on "posing" trunks was in 1996.  Perhaps I'm not an "expert" but I know enough to be able to form a good opinion on any MMA topic...

For those mental vegetarians out there:  I'm guessing that MS means 8 or 9 matches.  "Nearly" means close to, or approximately.  Hopefully this clears up anyone's confusion.  I know the english language really has some zingers out there.

Actually I have gotten in more than my fair share of fights including being jumped by 7 guys at a high school part, dozens of fights in the water while surfing and plenty of sparring sessions that went a bit too far.  But, what does being a a real fight have anything to do with being knowledgeable about MMA ???

If I count all of the matches I've had with my 8 & 10 yr old daughters then I've been in over 100 of them and my record is 99-1...eat that Fedor..lol.

How the fuck do you get bitten with an "MMA bug"?? Your either a fighter from the beginning or you're not its simple, you don't just one day decide you wanna be an Ultimate Fighter lol. And the way you judge fighting shows you have no clue what the hell is going on in the cage during any given fight, you're just watching to cheer on your favorite UFC 'hero' and ramble on about p4p rankings and your beloved and overrated GSP.

The most valuable member of this board from what i could make out is Chuteboxe and even he doesn't frequent here much anymore. The result being that we are subjected to the same arguments over and over again from the same 3 - 4 members, and so this board is dead - this is a genuine shame as there is potential here for insightful discussions which people can contribute to in a positive way and learn a little more than what they know now.

CockSpin, people would take you more seriously if you didn't say stupid things like Fedor and Wandy are overrated. They could have crushed as many tomato cans as they want and they would still not be overrated because you determine the skill ceiling of a fighter by the best they beat and not the worst. Fedor beat Big Nog, Crocop, Heath Herring, Goodrich, Semmy Shilt and Mark Hunt. Wandy beat Rampage and Sakuraba who even Dana White regards as the greatest middleweight ever. They were not overrated. They may be overrated now, but saying they were always overrated is ridiculous.

agreed bro! but it is human nature....
fedor was not defeated for what 10 years? beat some of the best in their prime!
the guy looses 3 fights and is regarded overrated... lol!

the 3 fights he lost were not even that bad of fights! had some bad luck....
against werdum was his own fault, thinking toooo easy and was impatient.
the fight against the giant head, well that was a bit of an off day i think. but still he was stopped by the ref, not a loss in my book.....
against hendo, man he looked better allready, just he got ktfo, happens you know in fights... lol!
he will be back i think , his problem is more mental then physical...
and wandy.. well..... you do not get a name like axe murderer easy! legend!!, whatever fight he looses from now on does not change that!

calling guys like that overrated.... hell if you fight in the ufc you are good! period!
to get to pro level you are allready a amateur champ!

A great example of being labelled overrated is Igor. People only remember him being knocked out viciously by Crocop, and neglect to remember the world class killing machine he was for most of his career. He seemed to peak too early, once he hit his late 20's he just wasnt the same guy.

Near 40 fight in streak against some decent opposition too, the man as born to put people to sleep. He fought a good 30lbs+ over what he should have too, and yet he as one of the nicest people you could meet outside of the ring.

I think he hurt his knuckles to the point of not being able to hit like he used to, so he started to become more of a grappler than a puncher hence his downfall..  :-\
