You know the one where you adjust the weight stack with the pin (like with leg extensions) as opposed to the one where you put a million plates on each side? I am so sick and tired of putting plate after plate on the dam leg press and then taking them off after. Hurts my back like a bitch. Lately I've switched to the machine since all I need to do is move a pin to the weight I want. Any difference in terms of effectiveness?

"Any difference in terms of effectiveness?"...Same shit
-
squats are the best

Tension is tension.
That being said I prefer incline 45 degree leg press vs leg presses where you press forward. The latter feel uncomfortable for my back. But it also depends on if the sled is moving or not.
-
I call the ones with weight stacks and pins,"The Fischer Price Version".
-
When it comes to 'straight forward leg presses the worst are the ones where the foot plate is moving, if the seat moves and the foot plate is fixed they feel better (for me). But overall I prefer 45 degree leg press with a moving sled (when it comes to leg presses).

Gotta love all this bullshit that you cant have big legs without squatting ::)
I prefer squats but my trainin buddy never does them and his quads are massive ( with muscle ).
Its all genetics, not what exercises you do ;)

Well I believe in max contraction and that theory states "the longer you can keep a muscle in a fully contracted position, the more muscle fibers you’ll stimulate and the more muscle growth you’ll promote." and you can do this with any exercise and any machine you can get the muscle in the fully contracted position. The length of time you hold the contraction is debatable, but 20 - 30 seconds on each exercise is proven to stimulate muscle growth

yea that's the one I am talking about. The seat moving one. I can't believe anyone ever thought to make a version where the foot plate moves.

bitch I've started every leg workout with squats since I first step foot in a gym. lol at you suggesting squats replace leg press. Do them both trainer man

I use the plate loaded leg press before squats. I feel its superior compared to the machine type.

You are wrong if you naturally have big legs then anything you do will grow them, but if you have skinny legs you better get over to the squat rack fast.

It's the "machines are dangerous" guy. LOL

Squats rule! Leg presses are secondary. Just my opinion of course. :)

squats is the number 1 exercise to get your legs big sure you can mix it up with leg press, hack squat etc., now if you have being squating for 10 years or you have big legs then that is different you can ease off the squats, but if this is not the case you better start squatting.
-
Squats can be great but they are not a must. And for many taller guys they are problematic because they end up in a very bent over position which puts a lot of stress on the lower back. Butt grows but quads don't necessarily get a lot of stimulation.

Why do you post this twice? Early-onset Alzheimer's ?
-
What feels better for you? If you aren't feeling it enough from a plate loaded leg press or squat then yeah, give the machine a try. If the machine leaves you struggling to walk after, stick with it! Don't worry about what others do. Experiment and find what works best for you. Just make sure you are always pushing yourself.

the machine leg press tend to make my ass come off the seat pad and i feel the weight on my lower back then on my quads.... i just dont use those machines at all laying or seating

I don't use them but this is cool......

You hate having to load and unload the machine with plates because your back hurts?!
I bet it does.
Leg presses, when done "properly", are horrific on the low back. Sure, some get great results from generally shallow leg pressing and doing tonnes of volume, but for those who are not set-up in this way and/or not on drugs, full squats cannot be beaten.
Big wheels developed through leg presses often look unfinished. Like they're not really real-world functional.
Avoid leg extensions for anything but perhaps light warm-up sets. Heavy extensions will destroy the knees faster than ANYTHING. Largely useless exercise unless you're someone who has just woken from a two-year coma. Think about it: when in real life does a human flex his knee without any hip flexion? That's right, never.
The freebar full squat, done well, is one of the very safest movements one can do in a weight-training gym.
However, many are simply too weak of will and body to wiggle their asses under that barbell and bend the knees sufficiently.
I have been squatting ass-to-grass for 26 years and have never had a knee issue. Last weekend I raw (and drug-free) squatted an easy 650 in my meet.
