How can this be? 80million over his career and it's all his agents fault + bad biz ventures!!
What ever happened to putting money in a good old fashioned Roth IRA, CD and savings account?

To be black and have some financial sense, you'd actually need to be part-jew (Wiggs) or gay (Goodrum).
If either of these prominent getbiggers had Owens money before this, they would have made that fortune grow even bigger.
Actually, he trusted the wrong people.
"It's not a matter of having lived too large -- he was never the type to stockpile Ferraris or build himself a compound; the flashiest car he ever drove was a Mercedes, and while he indeed racked up a few homes that cost as much as $4 million, the only crib he classifies as even mildly sick by pro-ball standards was the one he bought in Atlanta to live in during the Philly off-season.
The problem, he says, is that he's by nature too trusting, loyal to a fault, despite everyone's carping that he's selfish. It's the sad old stereotypical song of the up-from-nothing black athlete: He let other people take care of things."

LOL OF course!!! As if one must be part of some sort of esoteric pursuit to hold onto their fortune! ::) ::)

in the article it says he wasn't a lavish spender ???

f him. I got my own finances to worry about. No sympathy.
-
I thought he had those two niggerettes working for him. Weren't they suppose to help make smarter moves with his money?
-
if i was in his shoes. my money would have been in the bank... and thats it.
this fucking obsession with making investments to earn yet more. how much is ever enough? 80mil is more than enough for one lifetime. you could live of just the interest alone .
-
anyone who earns $1 million on their own is shrewd enough to keep it (most of the time). They know the hard work it took to get there. And they know how to make a living should they lose it.
ANyone who is just given that much money for a one-time luck (lottery ticket) or short term athletic prowess (NFL contract) can't replenish it, and often doesn't have that hustle gene that is required to earn/preserve that kinda money.

Would work if you have common sense also. Give me a million dollar and I would be set for life.

My wife is a fan of his reality show so I catch it from time to time. When he went home to Alabama I got the impression that he financially supports his entire extended family. That can suck someone dry in a hurry.

Obama will be broke like this within 5 years of leaving office too.
As for T.O. , nothing new. Something like 75% of NFL players are broke within 3 years of their careeer ending.
Same thing w Basketball players.
-
Obama will be broke like this within 5 years of leaving office too.
All former presidents are granted a pension, an office and a staff. Obama will make $200k a year just for being Obama.
This, of course, ignores the fact he made 1.8 mil BEFORE he entered office. He'll be paid WORLDWIDE to give speeches. He's gonna see clinton money when he leaves office.
33,, you hate him, and that's cool, but be logical here - obama will be worth $100 mil, in two years out of office.

He's a fucking idiot, he'll say anything hateful about the President before thinking it through. What I find hilarious, is Obama and every other minority he wastes his life hating have no clue nor care he even exists. And he types likes he's making a difference....70k+ hahahaha

I'm sure the president has his staff working feverishly to try and handle the issues that 33 brings up. ::)

i remember some other nfl player (i think ???) who went broke a year or so ago. all the people he had bankrolled through the years turned their backs on him ::)
there was a thread on here about him.. maybe ended up sleeping and living in his car

Mike Webster did that.
-
what---a--stupid---idiot--
-
I don't think he's "broke-broke". There is a difference between Rich people broke, and regular people broke.
Remember, Michael Jackson was supposed to be "broke" as well...but, I bet at that time be could of bought a luxury car of his choice, but if a regular person was "broke" , fat chance in that happening.
And extended families can lay a guilt trip on you, "Oh, so you can have a big NFL contract, but you can't help uncle Leroy with his dialysis."
"oh, so you can drive a Mercedes, but you can't help cousin Jah-Jah fix his credit so that he can buy a car."
-
The wife and him have grown accustomed to a billionaire lifestyle that no matter how much he makes will put them under.
You make a good point.
What the GB locals don't quite "get" is is that even if you make 1 mill a year BUT spend 2 mill a year you're still BROKE & in debt!
-
Mike Webster did that.
cheers.
must be a fucker to lose everything and end up like that.
-
Now maybe this fuckhead will finally be humbled...going from top NFL star to absolute zero.
The worst part isn't how he squandered $80 million by his own doing (grown men take responsibility and not blame agents because he fucking PAID those agents) The worst part are the people who feel sympathy and pity for this tool. Even 1/10th of that would set up a lot of smart and responsible people for life.
There are families being raised on $40K to $50K a fucking year...and this asshole can't avoid "financial troubles" on $80 million in a decade.
TO still can probably land some NFL hosting/commentating gig or VH1 will probably pay him some money to do some reality show.
-
The wife and him have grown accustomed to a billionaire lifestyle that no matter how much he makes will put them under.
Billionaire lifestyle?

Yes. Private jets, hanging w buffett, lavish vacations, lavish eating and dining, $500 sneakers, etc. They are already shopping for a megal mansion here in NY along the south shore in the Hamptons, etc.
-
They have absolutely no idea about financial "sense." Not a clue about investing, markets, financial securities. They probably don't even know how to put money into a fucking savings account. All they do is spend spend spend... ::)

now just another freegan getbigger =/

I know that former Ravens DB Chris McCallister squandered something to the effect of 52 mil. He was on the Super Bowl squad that was all-time great. Last I read he had been reduced to living in his boyhood bedroom at his mom's house. After I heard about it I was astonished that he hadn't bought his mom a luxury home upon being drafted. Maybe his mom had some down to earth financial sense that he didn't listen too.

Saddest story in NFL History..
also one of the best centers in history

Uh, The Prez has his own jet, yes paid for by us the people.
Mansion, ha, just like Bush looking for property in S America, eh?
I guess Obama should tell his cooking staff that everybody will be eating PBJ and ham sandwiches.
So, he'll cut the staff to one, his wife. And everybody is going to wear potato sacks for clothing---oh my bad, recycled potato sacks.

don't the nfl school and advice these players in matters such as looking after your finances ?
i'm pretty sure that most english football clubs are always running courses about everything from money to drugs and hoes

With the exception of real estate which can be an investment, the rest he'll most likely be giving for free, as unlike bush, people actually like the guy. Anyhow melt away bitch.
-
That's too bad. However, I wouldn't say that I'm shocked. People that earn money in sports are often not familiar with how to manage it because they don't come from money. They didn't grow their fortune in a natural way, they are just fortunate that they have a talent. They got a big chunk of money in a short time and they are ill prepared to make it grow or even last them until age 40.
Sucks to be him. Fortunately for a while he will be able to earn a modest sum just by being TO. Reality shows, personal appearances, etc.

hes broke but still has 100k in da bank

Hasn't he already faked a couple suicides? He isn't long for this world without $$$.

i have a nfl theory on that one too like the playoffs. yes, the nfl and nba do, but the players keep going under within 10yrs. nfl owners provide their financial officers via those schools they set up, and the advisors have players invest in dummy companies setup by the owners. hence, the owners over time recoup most of those mega-contracts. there is no other way that money guys fuck off all those millions with so called advisers given to them by the nfl and nba trust.
of course guys like jordan, willie gault, magic, etc, etc, etc pass on the advisers and meet their own in the real world.
-
I bet that while T.O. is now considered "broke", he is still richer than any recent Mr. Olympias (Coleman, Cutler, Heath).

I think you are right. I remember an article in the Washington Post Sunday Magazine on Jordan. This was back in HS (there was one on Kevin Levrone as well).
It talked about his agent, who was a big time agent, but he was very savvy with money, and Joran and him meshed...
Now Jordan has a flourishing Motorcycling racing team, I believe he still has his dealership and other ventures...
These dudes get huge contracts right out the gates, poor financial advice, big eyes, and all the other trappings. It's a recipe for disaster, especially when you didn't have a father figure, or witness your parents saving money (or in my father's case, being cheaper than a hobo).
So, something doesn't add up, I think there needs to be an investigation into these "financial advisors" and where the money actually goes.
-
I know that the league has guys like Cris Carter and Herm Edwards brief the rookies. But, you can't make someone pay attention.

Sweet Jesus how the fuck do you blow 100 mil?

hate juanita or not, she handled alot of his stuff early on, including neg for the nike deal, so her little $125M was a fair settlement. who knows, but those nfl and nba financial classes are BS!

The answer is in your question, right before "100".hate juanita or not, she handled alot of his stuff early on, including neg for the nike deal, so her little $125M was a fair settlement. who knows, but those nfl and nba financial classes are BS!
Quite true, he can't say she wasn't "hands on" unlike a lot of these trifling "basketball wives".

Very simple just get married twice.

'She's flat broke': Whitney Houston 'has spent her $100m fortune'
By Leah Simpson
She’s about to make her big screen comeback in the remake of Sparkle with popstar Jordin Sparks but Whitney Houston is reportedly 'broke'.
The 48-year-old singer - who has overcome crack cocaine addiction - has allegedly spent all of her fortune, including a reported $100million record deal.
Whitney is being financially supported by her record label Arista, which has given her an advance payment on her next album, according to reports.
Broke: Whitney Houston has apparently spent her all of her fortune
‘Whitney's fortune is gone. Music industry heavy hitters are supporting her and her label is fronting her cash against her next album, but no one knows when that will be released’ a source told Radaronline.com.
More...She's back! Whitney Houston shines as Jordin Sparks' mother in remake of musical movie Sparkle
‘She might be homeless if not for people saving her. She is broke as a joke.’
Whitney - whose ex-husband is Bobby Brown - is believed to be in such a dire financial position she has even had to resort to contacting friends for small loans.
The source added: ‘She called someone to ask for $100. It is so sad. She should have Mariah Carey money, and she's flat broke.’
A spokesperson for the singer strongly denied the claims when contacted by MailOnline and said: 'That is ridiculous and not true! She stars in SPARKLE out in August which she also Exec produced. She just wrapped the film.'
Bad finance: The star reportedly signed a six-album deal worth $100 million in 2001
In August 2001, Whitney signed the biggest record deal in music history at the time with Arista/BMG, renewing her contract with the label for $100million to deliver six new albums.
She released her last LP I Look to You in August 2009.
In August, her first film since 1996’s The Preacher’s Wife will hit cinemas in the US and Houston plays, Emma, the mother of Sparks’ character, Sparkle.
Making a comeback: The singer/actress is set to star in Sparkle alongside Jordin Sparks when the movie is released in August
In a new shot from the flick, the pair can be seen all glammed up for the new version of the blockbuster about how a girl group experiences turmoil after one of their members turns to drugs and another achieves their desired fame alone.
Houston said: ‘Part of the fun of making this movie is definitely the costumes and the hairstyles. The movie is set in 1963, and we had a great wardrobe, hair and makeup person and I loved wearing the outfits.’
Co-star Jordin spoke highly of the diva to People magazine.
‘She was so cool and very motherly toward me. If I ever looked like I needed something, here she came saying 'Are you okay?'
‘I sang her songs into a hairbrush when I was little. Now she's acting as my mum and scolding me. It was a dream come true.’

False - saving is good for the economy since it provides banks with liquidity to lend to businesses to start businesses and expand.
Consumption of cheap chinese crap does not help anyone in the long term but the chinese.

I need to get a job as a financial advisor to black athletes and milk them of their money. I need to change my name to Jesse Jewbergenstein.

well of course, if assuming that someone buys the stuff these companies produce. There is no point founding a company if there are no markets.
Someone must consume to keep the economy growing !!
what comes to individuals saving for providing banks the liquidity... I think central banks take pretty good care of providing liquidity for banks these days :-X

You can't legislate common sense, moron.

We were just talking about how possibly the financial advisers are employed by the owners to have the players invest in dummy corps...
If what you said was done, it means that chances are the money will again be put back in the owners pockets
i think, unless you have Jay Leno money and are a true enthusiast, you should leave the high end cars alone (and the stupid customizing and rims). They are nothing but money pits---granted many rare cars the depreciation is less than a Honda accord, and will actually be worth more---those are rare and few and far between. Many of those cars that "ballers" get aren't worth half of what they paid for in few yrs, add those stupid custom rims and stereos, you have a shitcan.
Get with dudes with like Buffet and others who live conservative lives, but make their money work for them.
Stop buying jewelry like you are trying to look like Brian Pumper.
Stop buying fur coats, your name is not Diddy, or Goldie.
Oh, and most importantly, those women don't like you for you, but for your money...and don't wife them up...and flush the condoms.
-
nobody in this whole thread has it right, none of you actually know why he is broke, and that he did not have to do anything in order to be broke, he could have been very smart and still would be broke today
he got hustled plane and simple, he did not even get hustled that hard, because he's not truly broke, he's down to his last millions and it is his new financial advisors who tell him to say he is broke and to start panicking. because he still is not nervous, he sees 1.76 million in his bank account and thinks he's fine, he's not fine because there's still sharks in the water who can swipe it from him easily
at least he's not mike tyson he truly got swindled and owes hundreds of millions
first to address the ghetto mentality of most blacks with money: they are entering into a world which they think does not respect them, they are very uncomfortable in suits and sweaters, they shake hands nervously with the whites who have inhabited that world, and they quickly look for someone who can be their friend, someone who they can trust and will stand up fo rthem in the world of rich men
the problem is the rich men don't like them, they dont want to be their friends, so the inly friends they make are the ones after their money. they only make friends with sharks who behind their backs compete to swindle them out of the most money. and even after they stole from them, there is never an "i told u so" moment on the part of th ehustler, there is never the pointed finger and the laugh, from the beginning to the end the shark is friendly with his target. at the poker table there is talk of that was a good play, tyrone, u got some balls. on the golf course there is talk of you gotta look out for yourself, dont trust anybody tyrone, btw put your hips into the swing.
it's a looooong con, a con that never ends, when owens dies the sons of people who swindled him will send flowers to his funeral, that's how long
-

lets not forget that no racing team is profitable. no motorcycle dealership is gonna profitable in an MJ way. I suspect jordan really lucked out with his air jordan marque and for that he can thank phil knight and the brothas that seem to obsess more over sneakers than women do over heels
-
no, jordan is in another league all together, if he didnt play basketball today he would be a rich whatever he wanted to be, he;s a guy who no matter what winds up with all the chips at the end of the day
-

Ahh, Mr. Buffett !! True inspiration for every human being.
The greatest American IMO. Very motivational (not saying that anyone can do what he has done and accomplished but his views of life and things are valuable for everyone).
I have read his story, the book brick "Snowball".

Rusty, from what I read, in the mags, Jordan's Suzuki team is/has doing well, of course there were hiccups when he started...he has good riders, and a good bike supplier...I don't follow the sport that closely, but I think they have had some podium finishes.
Jordan owes his mystique to Nike, and to a certain University of Maryland player who died.
The first Jordans were ugly, but everybody remembers that jumpman picture.
Then let's not forget Spike Lee's commericals (and he was a knicks fan)...the foundation was laid by Dean Smith, at Ball So Hard University aka North Carolina.
Knight only put the strategy together...Nike was the marketing behind it.
-
Maybe him and MC Hammer could open up a rib joint together. Call it Mc Owens.
-
you guys dont see the different between to and jordan? jordan was the leader at all times, he was the organizer, it was his will that was being executed on the court. he and the coach worked together, this ability to cooperate is important, so was his ability to manage a bunch of egos. he stood up for people when he needed to, he discouraged people when he needed to, he took the blame even when it wasnt necessary, he took up the position of leader and the responsibility of that role unselfishly. and to is still pushing responsibility onto other people to this day, there is the difference
-

sure we see the diff. TO is just another athletic black man with an over inflated ego and a big mouth. dime a dozen MJ is MJ..point. Maybe his mom had some down to earth financial sense that he didn't listen too.
haha classic!

Mike Webster did that.

lol i cant feel sorry for these idiots.
even if you had no common sense, no idea how to invest, no clue about roths, ira's, mutual funds etc, even just putting 25M in a high interest savings account will give you over a $1,000,000 in interest.
fucking idiots.

People forget that these athletes don't get all this money up front. Much of it is projected, over a number of years, based on performance incentives, bonuses and the like.
Just the athlete can opt out, so can the company. Throw in taxes, investments that bleed cash (i.e. real estate, bad business deals) and it ain't that hard to blow that much money.
Maybe him and MC Hammer could open up a rib joint together. Call it Mc Owens.
As someone said earlier, Hammer is hardly broke. He doesn't quite have the millions he once did, but you won't see him on food stamps anytime soon. Plus, Hammer has made a lot on his online businesses. Plus, he still does some touring, as a lot of old-school rappers from the 80s and 90s do (nostalgic touring scene).

Can someone loan me 25 million for a year? I won't spend any of the money. And I would force a bitch to suck your dick.

It's the sad old stereotypical song of the up-from-nothing black athlete: He let other people take care of things."
hahah kwonda speaking the truth as always !
forgive me if your name is Takwonda 8)

It's narcissism at it's core. Anyone going in to sports, 9 times out of 10 is narcissistic. It's the attitude you need to have in order to go forward in a industry that has such a high chance of failure. White people do the same they just end up in music and acting, as they have much greater odds of being successful in those two fields.
There are a couple of reason why the white folk don't get the exposure for this shit. In music and acting you usually have to be established, around 28 years old not 18 when they make it big. The two industries also don't punish people so hardly for getting older. And the obvious white folk hide their fucks up alot better than blacks especially narcissistic celebs.

He may have to start playing some tunes for money with Manute and Muggsy.

prison and jail ::) ::)

"And on top of that, he's battling in court with four women to whom he pays a total of $44,600 a month in child support for his four children, ages 5 to 12."
$535,200 a year... Pussy has destroyed many men. Control that, live a modest life, and let your actions speak for you rather than your loud mouth and you can go far. Most pro athetes cant do that. Women chase them constantly, they got money and all the toys, they think they have it made and talk shit. Then it all hits the fan.

prison and jail ::) ::)
as well as incarceration?

What apply85 said...Rusty, from what I read, in the mags, Jordan's Suzuki team is/has doing well, of course there were hiccups when he started...he has good riders, and a good bike supplier...I don't follow the sport that closely, but I think they have had some podium finishes.
You're showing your age , first Jordans were not ugly and everyone wanted them back then.

Back in 1985, I was 8, but when the Jordan II and IIIs came out, I liked them...as compared to the originals, I just don't like the colorways
when I worked in Footlocker during the summers in college, they had the Air Force 1s hightops out---they resembled the Jordans, except nobody bought the green, red, and white ones, they were ugly as all get out---I should say, the only people who bought those shoes were Latinos...
I'd say the Filas that were out at the same time were better looking looking than the Jordans.

Michael Jordan is an interesting man outside of basketball.
He's an African American man, but really grew up around white folks his entire life. His best friend who he's known since he was a young child is a white man whom bonded close with Michael and his late father.
The interesting part is that Michael doesn't like black people. He's notorious for telling black fans "NO" to autographs and will just refuse to even speak to them. He's been known to have simply surrounded himself around white people his entire life and feels uncomfortable around other African American people (eventually including his ex-wife?) and other African American teammates (hated Pippen and Rodman but was close friends with Steve Kerr).

well that explains his hugely successful public and private life then.

Warren Sapp who still has a job with the NFL network at $400,000 a year even though his contract will soon be over just filed for Bankrupcy .... D
http://www.tmz.com/2012/04/06/warren-sapp-broke-super-bowl-ring/ (http://www.tmz.com/2012/04/06/warren-sapp-broke-super-bowl-ring/)

Warren Sapp I'M DEAD BROKE and I Lost My Super Bowl Ring and College National Champ Ring too
Future NFL Hall-of-Famer Warren Sapp has filed for bankruptcy ... claiming he's racked up millions of dollars in debts ... but worst of all, dude claims he LOST his 2002 Super Bowl ring.
Sapp -- who played in the NFL for 12 years -- just filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy in Florida ... and in the papers he gives a full rundown of his dire financial situation.
According to the docs, Sapp owes more than $6.7 million to various creditors ... including hundreds of thousands of dollars in child support payments and alimony to at least 4 different baby mamas.
Among the debts, Sapp says he owes $853k to the IRS for 2006 and another $89k for 2010. Sapp says he also owes $2,858 in medical bills for "Corrective Speech and Language Therapy."
Sapp says he only has $6.45 million to his name ... and lists all of his assets in the documents ... which include:
-- 240 pairs of Jordan sneakers and sandals ::) ::) the blacks version of an IRA
-- Large Nude women painting
-- Lion skin rug (female - lioness)
-- Nike golf clubs
-- De Grisogono watch (scratch on crystal, nicks and scratches on band)
-- A boxing glove signed by Muhammad Ali
But most interestingly, Sapp notes he has LOST two of his most treasured and valuable possessions -- the 2002 Super Bowl ring he won with the Tampa Bay Bucs (example below) and the National Championship ring he won with the Miami Hurricanes.

In the docs, Sapp also lists his current salary as an analyst for the NFL Network as $45k per month ... $540k per year. Sapp says his deal with the NFL Network expires in August and he's not sure if the network will extend his deal.
Calls to Sapp have not been returned.
