Woman cashes $10,000 check, gets robbed
By: Will Kane

A South San Francisco woman who had just cashed a $10,000 check was robbed at gunpoint as she walked away from the bank, according to police.

South San Francisco police say the woman was walking near the corner of El Camino Real and Southwood Drive with $10,000 in cash in her backpack on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. when a red van pulled to the curb.

An unidentified man leaned out of the van, pushed the woman to the ground and grabbed her backpack, police said. The man then pointed a small gun at the woman and said he would kill her if she told police.

Police say the man is a 5-foot-9-inch, 250-pound Hispanic male with a dark complexion and black hair. The man was clean shaven and wearing a white jacket, a white t-shirt with black markings, gray pants, sunglasses and a gold chain around his neck, police said.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call South San Francisco police at (650) 877-8900.

how do you push someone onto the ground when your leaning from a van? leaning out the window? opening the doors and then leaning out?
Why would you Walk around with 10k?
Unless you're a getbigger.

They should be able to spot the Spotter inside the bank from the surveillance tape.

x2.  I laughed when I first read this story yesterday.  I still think it is funny.  Funny because it is hard to believe that anyone could be so stupid.  We are not given much information about the woman, but I think it is safe to say she is not an Olympic athlete or an amazon.  In other words, she is someone who could be easily pushed over and have her backpack taken from her.  If you are that physically vulnerable, why would you walk out of a bank with $10k in cash?  No possible cause could justify taking that risk.  I will stop short of saying she got what she deserved, but no amount of rules, laws, or protections can mitigate against sheer stupidity.

She either had a big mouth and told one too many people she was cashing a check or someone (customer, teller) in the bank saw what she was doing and alerted (text message?) the bad guy(s) outside.

I was a teller for a few years when I was in college at a busy branch.  In all that time, we never allowed anyone to cash a check for that amount.  If someone tried to cash a large check we specifically cautioned them against it and suggested alternatives (money order, cashier’s check, wire transfer, etc.)—which they always took.

This woman was simply a fool.  :-[

By the way, what’s the largest amount of cash you routinely carry in your wallet?  I prefer to use my debit card for most purchases, but one cannot use plastic for every thing.  When I go to the ATM, I usually get $100.  I almost never have more than $200 in my wallet.

I keep $200 in small bills in my car for emergencies… and small cash stash at home as well.  In an emergency/disaster (hurricane, earthquake) electricity and ATMS may be out of service for miles.

I carry a few hundred at all time, but I also carry a concealed weapon.  and yes, when I cash a check for $200, I'm walking out eyeballing fckers ready to throw down.

i can't imagine the amount of security i'd want carrying 10k...

I usually carry carry 500 dollars in my wallet. Every week i refill the amount until i have 500 in the wallet. However, let's say that i go to a gas station in a less than stellar location. I always put enough cash (10-60) in my front pocket to pay for a purchase.

There is no excuse for not having a bank account in 2012; one does not have to maintain a big balance to avoid fees.  If you get direct deposit most banks offer free checking.  Even if she did not hold an account at that bank she could still purchase a money order or a cashier’s check.

You would be surprised. I worked in a cemetery, not too far from the SSF bank that the woman was robbed at. We used to get little old ladies walking in to buy plots for their entire family and would pay in full all in cash. The kicker, is the old woman took the bus to get there and pulled the money out from a paper bag from a major shopping chain (Safeway/Lucky etc...)! This happened 5x that I can remember.

Just a little old codger that took the bus with 60k+ in a paper bag next to her.

Lol when I worked at a 7-11 I refused hundred dollar bills regularly. No one should ever have more than a hundred bucks on them.

P.S. for some reason or another the bosses in my area liked to pay their workers in cash($100 bills) some redneck shit I suppose.

Isn't $10,000 the magic number that the bank has to fill out forms for the Feds whether you take out 10G's or deposit 10G's? Taking out exactly 10G's is a red flag.

$10,000 correct. It generates a CTR Cash Transaction Report.

A currency transaction report (CTR) is a report that U.S. financial institutions are required to file for each deposit, withdrawal, exchange of currency, or other payment or transfer, by, through, or to the financial institution which involves a transaction in currency of more than $10,000. Used in this context, currency means the coin and/or paper money of any country that is designated as legal tender by the country of issuance. Currency also includes U.S. silver certificates, U.S. notes, Federal Reserve notes and official foreign bank notes.

Shouldn't the check take a few days to clear before she can walk out with the cash?

The new amount for SAR (suspicious activity report) was recently lowered from $10,000 to $5000.  They are slowly trying to get rid of cash altogether in favor of electronic transactions (using plastic) in order to track EVERY transaction you make.  Anonymity of cash will soon be a thing of the past.  Get ready.

In Egypt cashing that much money is totally normal...  There are way more cash transactions than there are credit card transactions.

I remember one time, my dad sold a property he owned, it was $200,000...  The buyer (a military general) paid it all in CASH!  Straight up cash... which he gave to my dad in a small duffle bag!

My dad called me up and asked me to take it to the bank to deposit it in his account, I had never been more nervous going from my home to the bank with that bag...

Funny thing when I got there, the bank manager was like "you'd better take a seat while we count this!" - just the way he said it was very humurous!

Yeah the $10,000 amount makes the whole thing sound suspicious.

I never carry more than $100 in cash. And I hate using a deibt/ATM card. Anywhere I need to go I can use a credit card  that I pay in full at the end of the month.

Revelation 13:16-18
[The second beast] also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.  This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.[e] That number is 666.

Rev 14:9-11
A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb.  And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”

hangclean was very obviously drawing a distinction between San Francisco and South San Francisco.  Your calling on Daly City, Brisbane, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico was rhetorically ineffective and made you look desperate to avoid the obvious and compelling conclusion hangclean articulated.  There is a case to be made for South San Francisco, but you failed to make it.
