(Obama's) GSA Chief Resigns Over Outlandish Spending

General Services Administration head Martha Johnson has resigned along with two of her deputies, reportedly over an impending inspector general’s report detailing lavish spending on a Vegas conference for a handful of government employees:
Organizers spent $835,000 on the event, which was attended by 300 employees. The expenses included $147,000 in airfare and lodging at the hotel for six planning trips by a team of organizers. Among the other expenses were $3,200 for a mind reader; $6,300 on commemorative coin set displayed in velvet boxes and $75,000 on a training exercise to build a bicycle.
“When the White House was informed of the Inspector General’s findings we acted quickly to determine who was responsible for such a gross misuse of taxpayer dollars,” White House Chief of State Jack Lew said in a statement to The Washington Post. President Obama “was outraged by the excessive spending, questionable dealings with contractors, and disregard for taxpayer dollars,” Lew said, “and called for all those responsible to be held fully accountable.”
The GSA is basically the federal government’s office managers, providing things like office space, desks, and cars to other agencies. One of its charges is to develop cost-saving administrative strategies. . . .

The head of Obama's General Services Administration resigned today over allegations of excessive spending at a Las Vegas training conference for federal workers that featured a mindreader, a clown, and a comedian.
The Washington Post scoops that GSA Administrator Martha Johnson submitted her letter of resignation to the White House Monday after the administration learned about the the conference from a forthcoming report from the GSA's watchdog.
According to the Post, the report found that the GSA used $835,000 in taxpayer funds to host a 2010 training conference for 300 employees at a luxury hotel in Vegas. Expenses included $147,000 on airfare and lodging for conference organizers; $3,200 for a mind reader; $6,300 for commemorative coin sets; $75,000 on a training exercise to build a bicycle. The Post does not specify how much money was spent on the clown and the comedian.
Johnson's deputies have also stepped down over the spending scandal, and four GSA employees who organized the conference have been placed on leave pending further action, according to the Post.
In a statement to the Post, White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew said the President learned about the spending report before his recent trip to South Korea and "was outraged by the excessive spending, questionable dealings with contractors, and disregard for taxpayer dollars."
"On his first day in office, President Obama made clear that the people who serve in his Administration are keepers of the public trust and that public service is a privilege,” Jack Lew said. “When the White House was informed of the Inspector General's findings we acted quickly to determine who was responsible for such a gross misuse of taxpayer dollars.”

Incorrect. The war in Iraq cost much more cash. To say nothing of the lost lives, wounded servicemen, and dead innocent Iraqis. I recall during a VP debate Cheny said the war would cost $80 billion and most if it would be paid for by Iraqi oil proceeds. ::)
In any case we never would have needed a stimulus bill if . . . Do I even have to finish that sentence? :-X

President Barack Obama will fly over 9 hours tomorrow, round-trip from Washington, D.C. to Las Vegas, Nevada, just to deliver a speech on immigration, according to the president's White House schedule. With Air Force One estimated to cost $182,000 per hour in flight, Obama's trip--that is, only his travel to and from Vegas--will cost taxpayers over $1.6 million.
Obama has no other public events scheduled in Las Vegas but his immigration speech.
"In the morning, the President will depart the White House en route Las Vegas, Nevada. The departure from the South Lawn and the arrival at McCarran International Airport are open press," the president's schedule reads.
