Those are the old 45's.  And look at his calfs.  Plus he does it with no straps.  Man the guys back then did it right.  Puts the "GH" guy of today to shame.

no question..I would just love to see some of the "hardcore" pros today try to keep up in a workout with the old Franco.  I remember reading that he was one of the strongest people in the world at the time...

Post by: onlyme on November 16, 2005, 06:26:43 PM
I used to watch him do deads and rows with no shirt on.  His lats were just incredible.  The biggest ever and yes they attached so low, right at his belt

looks like a shell. i wish my lats were that low
Title: Re: Franco

Two things really stood out in Franco the Bat's physique. His amazing lats, which ran all the way to his waist (as knny pointed out) and the split in his pecs.

I know theres alot of talk about wether flat bb bench is any good (i dont do it),but u gotta say those old boys did it and some had amazing chest. Franco was awesome, u think he had wee bit of gyno?
Even so....awesome.

Franco used to go around in the gym and always tell us how flat bench works more front delt than the chest.  The pec/delt tie-in allot.  But, he did bench allot.

i know this is a training question but arnold and Franco always let the weight "pull them in" when doing rows...especially cable rows. do you think this made their lats go so low to their waist or would you say its all genitic?

Muscle orgins and insetions are what you are born with-all genetics......

When he competed he was 185-190#.........I would guess off season max of 210-220.

Lyle Alzado pulled 765 for a single right in front of me at Gold's Venice- in 1982 or so-and he was in the 270# range and I think the strongest guy at Golds-or close to it.

That makes Franco's strength so much more impressive.

Calling Franco a midget takes nothing away from his incredible strength.  And Lyle pulling 765 in the deadlift is not impressive and he was far from being the strongest.  I have seen him numerous times benching and he could do 315 for 8 to 10 reps okay but he didn't have much more in him.  Considering all the shit he took he should have been allot stronger.  But he  didn't lift to be a powerlifter.  He played balled and his strength came in moving people not weight.

You know the what most amazing thing about Franco's deadlifting was.......he did not use any straps...no one used  straps back then.....that is amazing I think!
Title: Re: Franco
Post by: onlyme on November 24, 2005, 02:05:22 AM
That's right I never saw straps back then.  The thing I remember most about training back then was how you could ask anyone anything and get help.  No personal trainer or having to pay someone.  You just asked and they would help.  Running gym was so easy.  A index card was your membership application and agreement and all the cards went in this shoe box looking thing.  Nothing fancy but everything work smooth.  The blackboard behind the front counter had all the names of the guys who owed and when you membership was up for the guys whose membership was up that month.  Really easy.  Nowadays so much shit.  They have made it so complicated.

His lat origin/insertions are crazy in that kneeling front double biceps shot! It almost looks like a cape is hanging down or something. Lots of muscle on that small frame. Lots. Thanks for posting the pics.

It's funny how the guy in the backround looks real worried when the bar's halfway up, then when it;s all the way up he has a huge smile. ;D

I'm really surprised that of the thousands of people on here no one but me trained at the original Worlds Gym and saw Franco all the time training.  I'll never forget how he'd take his shirt off to do the bent over rows.  He was just huge and his lats started at his waistband

there is no fucking way lyle alzado deadlifted 765 or anything close to it.  he wasnt known for being strong, just super aggressive and had a bad attitude.  he wasnt even the strongest raider when he was on the team - howie long (who is in the hall of fame was).
Title: Re: Franco
Post by: onlyme on June 03, 2006, 01:10:12 AM
I'm not sure Howie wass the strongest.  I knew Howie.  I knew Matt Millen.  If you saw Matt in person you defintiely wouldn't say Howie was stringer than him.  I can't remember some of the other Raiders at that time but they were stronger than Howie and Lyle.  The team would come into the club I bounced nearly every night.

When I first joined the original World Gym in 1979 I saw a guy who I thought was john matusak.  I went home and was telling everyone how big and mean he was.  I coudl fo swore it was him.  It eneded up beingTony Nowak.  The guy in Pumping Iron who is peeling an orange when Arnold wals into the gym and by the front desk.

Franco was a man of very rare muscle inserts. That pec shot is unbelieveable, as well as his famous lat sweep going from his waist/obliques to under his arm pits. Always thought if he were as tall as Arnold, with the same bone size and muscle structure, Arnold would have had a very hard time against him in any Mr O. Good Luck.

the back was definatley unbelviable....Arnold's lats actually went pretty low as well.
