It's also very interesting that he's completely wrecked, and his sister is completely wrecked as well but in a totally different way. But you don't learn anything about their background, upbringing etc. This gives the entire movie a mystic touch. You wonder how have they become this way.
Also when she tells him on the phone "We're not bad people, we just come from a bad place". A lotta room for speculation and interpretation.
