Smith Machine is kind of good to use on reverse grip decline bench for triceps. Other than that I have no idea what it's for.

I normally don't agree with Woo on much, but he's right on this one. A lot people on here also agree with the way that nerd was doing a partial bench.

Smith machine is OK for a few things (seated press behind neck) but not for benching or squatting...

Smith Machine is great! Benches Inclines Squats Shrugs! If you have been training for years it is especially good, don't need to develop all the stabilizer muscles you need when you are starting out!

Just because you can do a variety of exercises on them - it doesn't make them great. That's not a justification. Urine is a liquid, therefore I can drink it. That doesn't mean it's a good drink.
Smith machines are great in that if you have been training for years and you're now lazy as fuck (or deluded by steroids that you're doing an effective workout), you can "retire" in the gym by loading up weight on a fixed track and convince yourself into thinking that it's just as good as free weights - which it isn't. Meanwhile - those of us who haven't given up improving (efficiently) continue to man up.
It is the implicit truth that doing free weight bench will increase your smith bench - but it is far from necessarily true that doing smith bench will increase your free weight bench. If you don't care, fair enough. Just don't try to claim that it is "as good" as free weights.

I use it for inclines presses. It's not a mainstay of my chest workouts, but it's a good tool for when my shoulders aren't feeling up to par. I can concentrate on pressing and it keeps you in the groove. Also, it's great if you don't have a spotter... you can go to failure and easily rack it yourself.

yeah,ill admit, i use the smith machines bc ive gotten lazy after years of training and have no further ambitions than to keep what i have now.
the free weight stuff is for the guys who arent there yet. :D
i dont think the muscle knows whether its contracted by using smith machine or fee weight anyway.
however, i wouldnt ever go as lazy and resort to cable machine only training, that is really for absolute newcomers or when one is sick.
doesnt matter where an individual is free
for me personally the appeal of lifting is telling myself im never there...
but yes the smith has it uses where a lot of guys go wrong is they substitue it for free weights.. becuse they can pile on weight and try to look impressive...or pretend they are moving massive weight
