I like Louis CK, but his material has become rather narrow and predictable.  His routine is about his ex wife, his kids, his mortality, or masturbation.   That's pretty much it.

Patrice O'Neals appearances on Opie and Anthony were some of the best comedy I've heard.

Carlin was second best. C.K. Lewis is great, Patrice O'Neal is hilarious, R.I.P., Dave Chappelle is my favorite alive.

You guy's are forgetting that Carlin was a thinker/monologuist - he was awesome, but he wasn't a fire of the hottest standup flame.

/and let's not forget mitch hedberg.

Watch some of his earlier stuff and his show, I do agree his stand up revolts too much around family and masturbation but he has some other stuff.

I love stand up, never really got richard Pryor  though.

Growing up, we had albums (yes albums) from Steve Martin, carlin and cheech and chong

I really though Kat Williams was going to blow up to Eddie Murphy status, but he obviously didnt

Chappelle, Stanhope, Kyle cease, to name a few who are currently out .......oh Dave atell too

all black comedians like chris rock that started dedicating half their show to the topic of blacks and race simply lost the entire white audience, same goes with spanish comedians that their entire show was about "us Spanish people", and same with jewish comedians (jackie mason etc) that simply cant shut up about jewish jokes, im sure its funny for jews but not everyone is jewish or understands it.

The kings are always those who talk "general stuff" that the majority can understand and relate to.

Lewish Black content is funny but his angry presentation is annoying after 10 minutes, Jerry Seinfeld style presentation with Lewis Blacks content would be great.

Andrew dice clay was funny but after a few shows you can predict all his jokes, and part of a funny comedian is not being able to predict the punch lines (think the work of Larry David).

All said and done, you will have to look really hard to find a funny comedian in these days, comedy clubs in NYC are dying out, people youtube the names of those set to perform and they see the junk and dont show up.

Im not black but love black humor. I think youre right though. just like all mass media variteies, there is an ebb and flow. stand up is waaay down from the days of Eddie Murphy and "an evening at the improv."

I think its a lack of variety in black humor.  You can pretty much guess what a black comedian is going to say. You're going to get a Pryor, Murphy or now Chapelle imitation.    That isn't always true but it is the majority of the time.   Maybe there are black comedians who break the mold but never get a chance in the spotlight because their brand of comedy doesn't sell to white or black audiences.  That is my theory.

except when the entire show is dedicate to one race whereas only a small % can relate to some of the jokes
