Title: What is the best Hand Spacing for Max Bench Press and Incline?
Post by: The True Adonis on February 23, 2013, 08:20:14 PM
 ???

I go VERY Wide with my grip, but I notice after watching Bench Press videos, nearly everyone uses a midget grip.  I have my middle finger on the very farthest notch or my pointer finger.  Sometimes even a bit further.  I do have very long arms.

So my question is, where do you put your hands and why?  What is best for you?

It always feels like I am going to pull a chest muscle when I go heavy with a wide grip.

If I am just "egoing" it up and trying to lift super heavy(for me at least haha) I prefer the pinky fingers on the rings.

What do you make of this:

Hand position

Varying the width of the grip can alter the mechanics of the movement. The longest range of motion is produced, and the most muscles recruited, when a standard grip is used in which the forearms are vertical at the bottom of the movement. A wider grip shortens the range of motion at the top of the movement, lessening the contribution of the triceps. A narrower grip shortens the range of motion at the bottom, lessening the role of the deltoids and pectorals, as well as placing more emphasis on the triceps. In powerlifting, the legal maximum width a lifter may take on the bar is defined as 81 centimeters between the index fingers. This position is indicated on most barbells by rings.

for max weight? just slightly wider than shoulder width

i personally do flat bench with the bar knuckles under my ring fingers and my incline press slightly  wider with the bar rings just inside of my index fingers

i used to go so wide the outside of my hand was cronically chewed up from catching the uprights on the re-rack.  about an inch outside of the ring that the bar usually has.  my reach is about 7 inches longer than my height tho, similar to yourself i believe.

Shoulder width
Shoulder Width seems awkward to me.  My "Close-Grip" Bench is nearly Shoulder Width, just a bit inside and is much, much weaker than my regular Wide Bench Press.

Yes!  I have the arm length of someone who is 6`6 to 6`9.  I remember standing shoulder to shoulder with a 6`7 basketball player and my arms were longer than his when each of us put them straight out.

thinking getbig is the only place for collaboration, wealth and knowledge, this meme has gotten out of hand, as a collective we are far far behined of where we need to be in terms of technology compared to the rest of earth

ego has gotten the best of many of you, so bad in fact, thats all some of you have, not realizing the stupid questions being asked, and for what purpose , and for what result were you hoping to acheive?

sorry man times are dire, you will be kicking yourselves for not following my lead

oh and to answer adonis' question about hand spacing on bench press, well i personally think using all types and spaces of position will do one of two things make you grow or not grow i guess you gotta experiement on that one there are some personal trainers that you could contact if you are serious about getting a good answer brosephreonican

Whatever grip feels the most comfortable for your shoulders.

A wider grip will put more stress on the pecs but what's the point if you wreck  your shoulders in the process. The bench press is a great chest/shoulder/tricep movement and differenr people will get more or less benefit throughout those areas. If someone wants to prioritize their chest development and the bench press is not doing it for them, I would suggest a different exercise rather than manipulating the grip and putting your shoulders in danger.

For people who have armspan >>> height I'd recommend narrow, almost tricep grip.

a little wider than shoulder width with elbows as close to the lats as you can, while at the same time pinching your shoulder blades together.  This will lead to utilization of the lats and protection from rotator cuff injury as well as general deltoid impingement problems for the shoulder.

Good advice, the weight will be evenly distributed down the lats and not only on the deltoids, in other words, pinch your shoulders blades together and tuck your elbows in,
also leg drive will help with explosiveness off your chest, foot position is just as important as hand spacing, squeezing the bar and keeping your whole body tight and I would say psyching yourself up for a big lift is extremely important if you want to break through a plateau, the mind will always give up before the body does...

Regards.
