Title: Calesthenics time! What are your numbers.....
Post by: BigCyp on April 11, 2013, 08:42:53 AM
What's up bros.

Been adding a lot of calisthenics to my routine (actually i've completely changed my usual routine/rep range to compliment the fact i'm dropping the pounds nicely) Now I train 5 days, and start each session with ONE heavy compound movement - i.e. Squat, Dead, Bench, St. Mil Press, Olympic Barbell curl, and then the next 30 minutes bodyweight training with a lot of bar work.

How many of the following can you do with STRICT form in ONE set NO pauses?

1. Overhand grip wide pull ups (on a straight bar no sloped wide-grip bar)
2. Bodyweight dips (Parallel)
3. Press/push ups

Try not to lie.

I do 20 bodyweight squats (not gay) to start off my "leg day" (oh brother), I suspect it takes me about 30 seconds.

Does this include male appendages on the downward part of the movement bro?

Cant do dips or chins at minute (shitty training set up in garden shed)

Prob can manage about 25 push ups :-\

I suck at bodweight stuff

In seriousness I hardly ever do any bodyweight exercises and have always been terrible at pullups (lats are pretty weak).  I suspect my numbers would be something like:

Pullups - probably not more than 10 with good form
Dips - these I do quite a bit, can usually get 20+
Pushups - maybe 50

Still respectable mate, you should give it a try and post the numbers you get - might surprise yourself.

Yes maybe I will try this tomorrow.

I've actually been doing full body workouts lately (3x a week) so no "leg day" per se.

You'll be surprised, as I was, how many you'lll get if you actually aim for total failure on these movements. I used to only get around 30 push ups, but it was usually after about 5 sets on the flat bench lol!

Lol back in my highschool days i worked up to a 120 full ROM pushups ;D Would often get comments on my pec development  8) These days probably around 50. No idea on dips. Im not good at repping pullups, so i would guess at about 10, probably could train it upto 15+.

Why are people here so shitty at pushups?  ???
Title: Re: Calesthenics time! What are your numbers.....
Post by: BigCyp on April 11, 2013, 01:18:00 PM
depends,brother.

full rom and squeezing all the way and slow reps or fast halfreps?

Aha good question, ok bear in mind that I'm not doing these movements strictly for hypertrophy - so slow squeezed reps are not so important on the dips and pushups. So to rephrase it; How many can you do, with half decent form in one set?

Typical Getbig Response:  "I can do 265 for 20 on the bench press but I can only manage around 25-32 pushups, maybe less."

Be reasonable Adam, your typical 'bodybuilder' using a low to mid rep range with high volume is not going to have the stamina to push out the high push-ups. On the other hand anyone with half a muscle could get to 100 if they took time out to specifically work towards it.

I used to do 100 (could do more but always kept it at 100) before I took the dogs out for a walk each day.  Too easy really.

wide grip with the ends cambered (i know you said only straight) I have one of those dip/pull up/ab bars at my place.

And I'll go on record that they are speed reps, not all the way down, but not "Nasser style" either.

Morning time or mid day, with preferably with gloves.

Have you heard of the Bar-barians? They train on parallel and horizontal bars among other stuff. To become a barbarian you have to do the following in under 6 mins with perfect form:

5 muscle ups
45 dips
25 pull ups (overhand and wide grip chest to bar)
55 push-ups
5 muscle ups

I've seen successful video attempts on YouTube and these guys find it hard going to bust out 25 pull ups, so 40 is very decent!

i can do ten pull ups

i remember a girl who weighed about 90 pounds asked me if she could join in

she did about twenty first set

and ended up spotting me to get ten

not my finest hour

Haha yes

Getbiggers evidently comprise the top 0.1% elite of the world when it comes to reps of 225 on bench.

I think many of dudes, without doing any exercises before could bust out 50+ pull ups. Strict ones...Hannibal especially...
Those dudes could easily do at least 60 speed rep pull ups.

BTW, has anybody heard a clicking noise in their shoulder joint when doing pull ups?

I remember when I first got into training, it was after watching a Bruce Lee flick...my goal was to do press ups on just my thumbs like I saw in his photos...so I dropped literally all my bodyfat (about 40 pounds) and would do them everyday...lost count of how many I could do, probably triple what an average gymrats normal press ups are. It would always be my "party trick"...true story  :)

there is member on here who doesn't most that much, his name is Calesthetics King, and he has vids on YouTube, which he has posted here. He tends to do push ups---and does odd versions, including handstand push ups...his body control is crazy!
Hannibal inspired me, and someday I want to get to his level (with practice)...it's healthier to look like that than it is to look like almost any competitive Bber.

no thanks bro, I'd rather not blow my shoudler doing shitty crossfit reps to try to get some arbitary number

I can do about 12 perfect form pullups, full ROM

Dips, who knows with BW but I did a dip with 6 plates (270lbs) a few months ago.

I do ring pushups at the end of my chest day and get a few sets of 10, slow as possible trying to squeeze the pecs. Awesome exercise

I had a friend played high school football and wrestled, and had a bodybuilder looking physique and after him claiming and me LOL and arguing he did 50 STRICT (touched the floor with far shoulder and locked out every rep) one arm push ups. Actually he did like 53 cuz it was a bet for money and I tried to jokingly cheat him a few reps, but he did them fair and square. Anyone else here cam or saw anyone else able to do that?!?

30 real pull ups
50 dips no problem
100 push ups for 2 sets after my chest workout for pump and failure
I am 165-170 at 46 yrs young.
I laugh at these young cross fit guys at the gym with their shitty dips and pull ups.
