Hanneman’s death follows a long ordeal brought on by a spider bite. In open letter posted on the Slayer site just yesterday, the band shared with fans some details of Hanneman’s struggle. “It’s been about a year since he got out of the hospital, and since then, he had to learn to walk again, he’s had several painful skin grafts, he’s been in rehab doing exercises to regain the strength in his arm,” the statement read. The letter also noted that while Hanneman had been hoping to rejoin the band full-time, he had recently told them that “he needs to take more time to continue his rehab.”

Undisputed Attitude was an interesting cover album of punk songs, but they had one original song "Gemini" which I consider one of their best songs.
"Seasons In The Abyss" almost made them mainstream... almost. Like the black album did for Metallica
"Reign in Blood" was just a fantastic album... Abyss and Reign have been in my workout mixtape since 91
RIP

I have been head banging to Slayer since the mid 80's as a kid.

Haunting The Chapel, just like albums from other bands(Venom, etc) scared the crap out of me in 80's. I really thought they were satanic and I was going to channel demons listening to them. Lol. South Of Heaven has always been my favorite album.
I always preferred Jeff's playing and song/lyric writing over Kerry's. RIP. He's hanging with Dimebag now....

Jeff Hanneman is gone, but Slayer is forever

When I was 10 years old, Slayer scared the hell out of me. But it wasn’t the punishing music or the satanic themes that frightened me. I worshipped at the altar of Metallica, Megadeth, Exodus, Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate and their like in the mid-1980s. Speed, Satan, violence, aggression — that’s what kept me going during my “awkward years.” Yet I was intimidated by Slayer.
It was because of the fans.
Slayer fans were scary. Not demons falling into hell on an album cover scary, but singularly and fervidly devoted to the metal band founded in 1981 by drummer Dave Lombardo and guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, who died yesterday at the age of 49, scary. Like me, those fans from the 1980s have grown into 30- and 40-something-year-old guys (and a few gals, too) who likely have broadened their music tastes a bit. But back when Show No Mercy hit in 1983, to some kids, Slayer was music. Nothing was heavier, less compromising, less progressive, or less pure than Slayer. Therefore, everything was less than Slayer. The word “poser” got thrown around a lot back in those days, and Slayer fandom defined that ethos. The scruffy kids with bad teenage mustaches who never left the house without t-shirt or jeans jacket emblazoned with the Slayer pentagram logo weren’t metal fans as much as SLAYER fans. When I was 12 or so, I borrowed a tape of Show No Mercy from a friend’s older brother, and it wasn’t the ferocity or violence of the music that scared me. It was the thought that some high school kid who reeked of cigarettes would pummel me for playing a Slayer tape in the same boombox I used to play Motley Crue.
Through 1985’s release of their second album, Hell Awaits, I was too young to even understand, let alone truly relate to, the almost religious devotion it seemed was required to be any kind of fan of Slayer. I was always curious, and frankly, kind of envious of the kids who belonged to that group, but I kept my distance.

That is, until Reign in Blood.
That 29-minutes of crushing speed and brutality finally brought me over. By 1986, I had grown a little older, had a little upper lip fuzz of my own, which certainly helped. But mostly, it was the relentless force of that album that hooked me, the way producer Rick Rubin managed to condense the sound introduced on Slayer’s first two LPs and create a 10-track masterwork that is almost too intense to bear. I remember being in awe the first time I heard that tape, even a little confused. It’s just too much to take in on first listen. But it was the album closer, “Raining Blood,” that sealed the deal. The evil, haunting intro, the disorienting, lighting fast riffage, and jaw-smashing breakdown on that track was impossible to resist. I had descended into hell and witnessed the tribal dance of satan’s army, and it was awesome. I was ready to denounce Motley Crue. I would never cut my hair again. I was a Slayer fan now, dammit. Let it Rain Blood. That song, of course, was written by the late Jeff Hanneman.
Hanneman’s legacy is Slayer itself. He was certainly a brilliant guitarist. It was largely his wailing, screeching guitar work that created the band’s eerie sense of dread. Hanneman shared guitar duties with Kerry King, and together they created a barely controlled chaos unrivaled in their genre. But in addition to being one of the founding members of the band, Hanneman is also credited for writing many of their classic songs. From the aforementioned “Raining Blood,” as well as the Reign in Blood opening track “Angel of Death,” to the title track of their slower tempoed follow-up record, “South of Heaven,” along with concert staples like “War Ensemble,” “Mandatory Suicide,” and “Seasons in the Abyss” — those are all Jeff Hanneman songs.
The lyrical content, and resulting controversy surrounding some of it, was also largely a Hanneman creation. Son of a World War II veteran and a Third Reich memorabilia collector, Hanneman’s fascination with war is present throughout Slayer’s catalog. Most controversially, the Hanneman lyrics in “Angel of Death” are based on Josef Mengele, a Nazi “doctor” who conducted human experiments at the Auschwitz concentration camps during WWII. Hanneman and the band always denied allegations that they are Nazi sympathizers, but they’ve done so more with a shrug and a “Screw you” dismissal than an apology. “I know why people misinterpret it — it’s because they get this knee-jerk reaction to it,” Hanneman said in an interview in 2004. “When they read the lyrics, there’s nothing I put in the lyrics that says necessarily he was a bad man, because to me — well, isn’t that obvious?!?!?! I shouldn’t have to tell you that. ” The takeaway: Hanneman doesn’t care what you think, and he has faith that his fans are smart enough to figure it out themselves.
I’ve been a Slayer fan now for more than 25 years, and I was heartbroken yesterday to see that Hanneman had died. Slayer’s work has definitely been spotty over the past decade or so (though I really liked World Painted Blood), but they never stopped putting out records and were still great live (I last saw them in 2010 for American Carnage, when they ran through the entire 1990 classic Seasons of the Abyss). I’m not sure if Hanneman’s departure will mean Slayer, too, has been put to rest, but I hope not. The band has toured with Exodus’ Gary Holt since Hanneman got sick, so maybe that will continue. Because while a Slayer show just isn’t the same without Hanneman on stage in his Raiders jersey, shredding riffs alongside King while Tom Araya spews out his lyrics before the worshipping masses, as a member of the Slayer army, I will always crave the euphoria that I feel at a Slayer show when the THUMP THUMP THUMP announcing “Raining Blood” kicks me in the chest. That’s Jeff Hanneman. That’s F—ing SLAYERRRRRRR. RIP, dude.

Those were the days - the anti glam crew in full force. Funny fact is that at the beginning the would share one leotard like outfit between band members. Money was short and enthusiasm abundant.

Remembering Jeff Hanneman: 1964–2013
Alex Skolnick
What separated Jeff from the rest of the metal pack was his rhythm technique, his songwriting, and that for which he will be most remembered—his riffs.

It was L.A.'s hottest day of the year, soon to segue into one of metal's biggest nights—the Revolver Golden God Awards fifth-anniversary show—when a very sad rumor spread amongst those of us in town to attend the event. Soon it would be confirmed as true via an official statement from Slayer: Founding guitarist Jeff Hanneman—who'd suffered from a tragic necrotizing fasciitis infection that prevented him from playing with Slayer since early 2011—had passed away a few hours earlier from liver failure. The world had just lost a voice hugely influential in metal and beyond.
Jeff had a subtle sense of humor that was all his own, and though he was a bit more reserved than the rest of the Slayer camp, he viewed life as a party to be enjoyed to its fullest. Much of what Jeff’s loved ones and fans appreciated about him was his steadfast and genuine style—the fact that he didn’t stray from his own vision. In Jon Wiederhorn and Katherine Turman’s Louder Than Hell: The Definitive Oral History of Metal, Jeff is quoted, “I tried to emulate what [well-known shredders] did and really grow as a guitarist. Then I said, ‘I don’t think I’m that talented, but more important, I don’t care.’” But as legions of dedicated Slayer fans the world over would attest, Jeff’s portrayal of himself as marginally talented is completely inaccurate. A more apt description could be summed up in one word, "immense."
What separated Jeff from the rest of the metal pack was his rhythm technique, his songwriting, and that for which he will be most remembered—his riffs. But his frenzied, turbulent solos were also an important part of the package. They weren’t about showing off. They served a greater artistic purpose—to sonically channel the qualities of Slayer’s lyrical content. They were sometimes abrasive, sometimes jarring, and at times disturbing. They had less in common with typical rock-guitar virtuosos than they did with the sonic collages of avant-garde improvisers such as Derek Bailey and John Zorn, the latter of whom is a self-professed Slayer fan who has cited the band as an inspiration. Though Jeff’s wider, more holistic guitar approach didn’t garner the same accolades as some of his more technically proficient contemporaries, Jeff never waivered from his original approach. And the fact that he continued to attack his guitar with relentless abandon—as though he were a linebacker on his beloved Oakland Raiders (whose logo adorned some of his signature ESP guitars)—is without a doubt a big part of why Slayer’s music will always be deemed one of metal’s high watermarks.
If you’ve ever seen Slayer live, you’ve felt exactly what propelled the band’s popularity past those of Venom and other classic-metal influences. In fact, prior to Hanneman and his bandmates’ groundbreaking albums—including 1986’s bar-setting Reign in Blood—many believed metal could never reach such levels of popularity and fan dedication. Before Slayer, metal had never had such razor-sharp articulation, tightness, and balance between sound and stops. This all-out sonic assault was about the shock, the screams, the drums, and—again, most importantly—the riffs. And it was Hanneman who brought so many of the band’s timeless riffs.
Of course, one cannot dismiss the voracious riff and song output of co-guitarist Kerry King, who, with his giant spiked wristbands, goatee, and shaved, tattooed head, essentially became the “face of Slayer.” But if you took a poll of the band’s fans—from dedicated concertgoers to peers and professional music journalists—their favorite Slayer songs would likely be dominated by pulverizing Hanneman gems like “Angel of Death,” “Raining Blood,” “South of Heaven,” “War Ensemble,” “Dead Skin Mask,” “Seasons in the Abyss,” and “Die by the Sword.” To many fans of heavy music, these songs and riffs aren’t just definitive of the band, but of metal itself.
Had Jeff recovered from his medical challenges, one can fully envision him confronting his demons head-on with songs about spider bites, skin grafts, and flesh-eating bacteria. Tragically, all we are left with is his memory and monumental songs and riffs that will reign in metal fans’ blood forever. By being true to himself and expressing his own unique style, Jeff Hanneman ended up doing what most musicians will never do—he impacted music in such a way that an entire genre will never be the same.

He's a good guy - straight forward and knows that there's a lot of sweat behind any achievement.
Don't dig his modern version(1994+) of his King-self but looking at it from a business perspective it's probably what he thought he had to do.
