MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — One of Minnesota’s most beloved pets has passed away. Schoep gained national attention after a photo of him and his owner in Lake Superior went viral. He was 20 years old.

A message posted on the Schoep and John Facebook page said simply, “I breathe but I can’t catch my breath … Schoep passed yesterday, more information in the days ahead.”

Schoep was a lovable shepherd mix, who lost his sight to cataracts and struggled with arthritis and hip problems.

We first met Schoep after a photo of him and his owner, John Unger, went viral last year. The two were captured floating in Lake Superior — a typical routine for a dog owner who wanted to find joint pain relief for his beloved four-legged friend.

Letters, support and thousands of dollars quickly poured in from around the world — all finding a connection with Schoep and his owner.

The more than $10,000 in donations had been used for a weekly laser therapy to stimulate old cells in Schoep’s body. The cells then reproduced faster, reducing swelling and pain.

The treatments bought Schoep and John one more year together.

Nearly 130,000 people have followed Schoep’s story on his Facebook page.

The video is from last year.   It is very touching.   It's still a tear jerker tho.

I will never understand women and their sympathy. This is a fucking 20-year-old dog dying of old age. Some people are lucky to live that long in this world.

Shallow and narrow-minded thinking if that's what you think it's about.

Many don't deserve to live that long.

Maybe people care because dogs are uniformly loyal, never betraying their family. A dog would never think to cheat on you, steal from you, or belittle you. Humans by nature are crass and duplicitous. Look at the video and if you are not moved then you are indeed the biggest piece of shit on this board. Rip on fags, blacks, gays, women, or whatever but don't fuck with dogs. You are nothing more than the dirt that they piss on.

I love dogs.  Owned some myself but I think once a dog goes blind and has debilitating arthritis,  it's compassionate to put them down instead of allowing them to suffer longer then they have to just because we find it difficult to let go.

I've seen this way to often.  It's understandable but selfish.  I've seen families pay a boat load of money keeping an old pet alive.  Money isn't the issue, it's the fact that the animals quality of life is so low that, as you said, it's more humane to end it's life.

A friend had an old dog who was on a variety of medications for heart issues and arthritis.  The dog had to wear a diaper because it was incontinent.  The dog rarely moved becuase of pain and spent most of the day sleeping.  At this point, it's cruel to keep the dog alive.  Eventually they realized this and had the dog put to sleep.

With the money the dogs owner received he able to afford medicine for the dogs arthritis and laser therapy also....the dogs last two years were good...if you read the piece the owner mentions that he was able to take the dog on trail walks that they hadn't done for a long time...dog was fine after the walks.
