By Elisinio Castillo
Legendary hall-of-famer Roberto "Hands of Stone" Duran does not believe Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) would have been a force in his era, when fighters like Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard and Wilfred Benitez were on top. He says Mayweather would have been "just another guy in the bunch."
Duran is not impressed with Mayweather's level of competition, stating that there is no comparison between the top contenders of today and the fighters who ruled from junior welterweight to middleweight 30 years aKgo. Duran said Mayweather should have a loss on his record from the first fight with Jose Luis Castillo and he scored the fight with Oscar De La Hoya as a draw.
"The problem right now is that Mayweather is fighting in an era where there are no real boxers. We knew that kind of style, we were familar with it. We were used to fighting those kind of boxers," Duran stated.
Mayweather has made comments in the past where he claims to be "the best fighter in the history of the sport." On September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Mayweather will face WBC/WBA junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez at a catch-weight of 152-pounds.

at lightweight Duran would buttfuck FMW.
-
Bullshit , even with 1 or 2 Losses in his record , he would still be an elite fighter in the 80"s .

I agree he would still be a top boxer in that era with a few losses

The statement is, FMW would be in that second-tier of 147s like his father, he damn sure wouldn't be the star of the division like today. I can't see him beating Leonard or Hearns, esp if he has to trade with them late to try and win the fight. No way he crabs on the ropes and steals against these guys. Even when he moves forward, it's still a punch here and there, even though timed. Hearns would get through his defense late and KO him. Leonard would outwork him like he did his dad.
I don't believe Sr fought Hearns

Sugar Ray barely beat FMS , FMJ is 10 X times the fighter senior ever was .

1978-09-09 Floyd Mayweather 15-1-0
Civic Center, Providence, Rhode Island, USA W TKO 10 10
Yeah, he has better defense but is he more offensively oriented than Sr and willing to take shots like him. Sr opens up to trade. No way, Jr opens up against Leonard or Hearns, esp, late in a fight. With his mentality, he'd think he was ahead on the cards.
Sr is also more exp in that fight. That fight pre-dates Duran and Hearns for Leonard by 2.5-3.5 yrs, is really Leonard starting to step up in class but he still won by TKO. It's equal to a young Carnelo, almost, meeting an exp FMW Jr

Hearns would get through his defense late and KO him.
Seems like Hearns used to tire real quickly. He fought with a KO or be KOed attitude, but the KO usually came in earlier rounds.

floyd jr still losses to leonard

FMJ great in ANY era
-
Blah, blah ,blah , blah ..............
Yeah , STFU

That little phagitt G_Strang also told me Mayweather was avoiding Berto.

there is no doubt FMJ is a great fighter. Plus he takes it seriously, he works his ass off. He doesn't drink or smoke and he stays in the gym even when he doesn't have a fight lined up. But he has benefited from all the wieght divisions, multiple titles, hand picked opponents etc etc.

Hearns has one blemish at 147 and that's Leonard. Emanuel Stewart and other old school trainers called it and said, Hearns' right at 147 would catch up to FMW at some point in the fight. No way FMW trades like Leonard to keep Hearns off of him. Even Mosley buckled his knees with a clean hook.
I'm not sure what to make of Hearns up to 160 when he was fighting Hagler and Barkley. His endurance got real bad.
Yeah , STFU
Stupid is as stupid does.

They ain't lying.
He's probably the best Mexican fighter ever, even though many claim Chavez.

Hahaha, my uncle also said he was the best. I just remember hearing he died in a Ferrari accident or something like that.

Yeah, Salvador Sanchez had good movement, speed, and good punching power. And he wasn't afraid to throw. He also had a dark horse quality to his early career that made people like him. He died in a car wreck with his Porsche. Here are his two most famous fights -

.
You really get a sense of him in the second fight.

thanks for those clips brother 8)

::)
Another Jimmy in a Box.
Sergio Martinez 154, Paul Willaims 147 and Andre Berto 147 - FMW scratched off all their names but put a Shot Cotto, Old Man Mosley, Chin First Hatton and MiniMe Marquez in their place . Berto shouldn't be fighting Mexican sluggers but that's on his camp (brother and father ::)), because their styles make the wrong fight for him. Berto's fight selection is the reason why a guy FMW will cherry pick BoxRec.

mayweather has a very high boxing IQ and had trained since he was 3 years old
had good trainers teaching him real boxing so he can stay competitve with anyone in any era
if he loses its because the opponent was superior genes and has the same boxing knowledge as him
-
fmj is phenomenal
his tactical awareness, defence and movement are in a league of their own
he would have been a superstar when ever he fought
-
He'd be an elite fighter, maybe the best of the bunch, but he doesn't escape that era of hearns, haggler and Duran without at least one loss.

Thats a great point, back in that era Duran took Hagler 15 rounds in a close fight and was then destroyed by Hearns in two rounds a few months later who in turn was destroyed in three by Hagler.
Duran beat Leonard but couldbnt get past Hagler who was beaten by Leonard.
Each was a legend who could have turned it either way on the night.
God I miss those boxing days.

The Leonard/Hagler fight was a joke. One of the turning points in boxing that brought today's state of things. Leonard/Hearns II was even worse. Somehow Leonard for all his greatness could be as deceiving as FMS. Could be phenomenal but also knew how to still get the judges' nod when he was in trouble.
-
this could go on and on. the problem with fmw is, he sidesteps some of the greats??? in their primes of his era for the b e a n e r tour.
sergio martinez 154
paul williams 147
manny paco when he was winning.
leonard, hearns, hagler and duran would jump at this guys. maybe someone skips martinez because of the speed issue but they are all over a midget like manny with/out arum.
