Ex-boxer told fiancee to beat up waitress over ‘disrespect’
Friday, September 13, 2013
A British ex-boxer was yesterday jailed after ‘egging’ on his fiancee to beat up an innocent waitress who allegedly disrespected him in a West Cork restaurant.
By Eddie Cassidy William Isaac, described by a judge as a bully boy with “a history of violence”, encouraged his fiancee, Siobhan Ginty, to punch 31-year-old Lucie Kopecka.
During the attack, Isaac, 45, urged Ginty, 23: “Finish her off and do it properly.”
The pair had cornered the waitress in a smoking room in the Gateway Restaurant in Durrus, West Cork, on Apr 7 last. Ms Ginty carried out the attack as Isaac blocked the door.
A chef, Christophe Zilliox, tried to intervene but he was assaulted by Isaac.
After watching about five minutes of the incident on CCTV footage, Judge James McNulty said the assault was “truly shocking, given the thuggery and the violence perpetrated on innocent people”.
At Bantry District Court yesterday, Isaac was jailed for five months and Ginty was jailed for four months after pleading guilty to threatening and abusive behaviour along with common assault charges.
In the witness box Isaac said he took full responsibility and wished he could turn back the clock on what happened in Durrus.
“I’m not trying to justify what happened, but this waitress, from day one, was always very rude. It’s my friend’s restaurant and I like to give him the business. She plainly ignored me for about five minutes. The place was empty. I was very angry.”
Supt Mick Fitzpatrick, prosecuting, said Isaac went home and after drinking a double vodka, the waitress got an abusive phone call from his girlfriend, Ginty, who warned her: “You don’t disrespect my man”.
Supt Fitzpatrick said both arrived in the restaurant and went to the smoking room. “Lucie said Siobhan was shouting ‘Do you know how much you disrespected my man, no one disrespects my man’.
“Billy said: ‘Show her, Siobhan, and she proceeded to punch the waitress full in the face three or four times, and then on the side of the head. She started to wrestle and kick her. Billy had the door of the smoking room blocked. Billy said to her ‘Finish her off, do it properly this time’,” the superintendent said.
Supt Fitzpatrick said the waitress was lucky she didn’t have any serious injuries.
Ms Kopecka, he said, had not worked at the restaurant since the attack.
Judge McNulty, said the video was ten thousand times more effective than any words the superintendent’s evidence could convey.
“While visitors are welcome to enjoy the best of food, and the land and the sea, those who work in the frontlines of the food and hospitality industry, serving people and serving visitors, are entitled to be protected from bullies and those, like William Isaac and Siobhan Ginty, who seem to think it is acceptable to beat and pulverise people.”
Judge McNulty said a fine or community service order was wholly inappropriate and he sentenced the pair to jail.

A former professional heavyweight boxer who was acquitted of the murder of a woman in the UK in a suspected gangland killing over a decade ago has been found dead at his home in West Cork.
Billy Isaac (45), a native of Manchester, was found dead at his home at Dromreagh in Durrus around 11.30am today by gardaí who called to the house after they were contacted by a workman who was unable to make contact with Mr Isaac.
Mr Isaac was found dead in a downstairs room and gardai believe he was fatally injured when he fell while trying to climb in through a downstairs window. His body was removed to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem today but gardai don’t suspect foul play at this stage.
Last month, Mr Isaac was convicted and sentenced to five months in jail by Judge James McNulty at Bantry District Court after he pleaded guilty to assaulting waitress, Lucie Kopecka at the Gateway Restaurant in Durrus on April 7th last.
Mr Isaac’s fiancée, Siobhan Ginty (23) was also convicted of assaulting Ms Kopecka on the same occasion and sentenced to four months in jail by Judge McNulty but both were released on bail pending a circuit court appeal.
Ms Ginty, who is also from Manchester, had returned to the UK in the past few days for a family event and Mr Isaac was alone in the house when the accident happened. He had been last seen alive in the Durrus area on Monday evening.
During his trial at Bantry District Court, Mr Isaac confirmed that he had three convictions for assault as well as one for possession of ammunition and one for harassment in the UK where he lived up until his move to Ireland a few years ago.
Mr Issac, who boxed as a heavyweight in the UK in the early 1990s, winning his two professional fights, was acquitted in 1995 of the murder of businessman woman, Pat Hayes who was shot twice in the head as she slept at her home in Denton near Manchester.
A security firm boss at the time, Mr Isaac was accused of carrying out the killing on the orders of his mother Rita who stood to inherit Ms Hayes’s bungalow and several properties they owned together in Florida but both he and his mother were acquitted of the killing.
In 2010, Mr Issac was cleared of charges of trying to extort £2.5 million stg from a businessman in the North East of England with former world champion boxer, Ricky Hatton testifying on his behalf, saying Mr Issac was “a credit to the sport”.
Gardaí in West Cork last night said that they would await the results of Mr Isaac’s post-mortem to include in a file on his death for an inquest to be held at the Coroners Court in West Cork

Billy Isaac, jailed by a local district court last month for assaulting a waitress who had alleged disrespected him, is understood to have fallen off a wheelie bin as he attempted to get into a window in his house, known as Ratsville.....
Wrought-iron electric gates, along with pillars and a postbox at the house in Dromreagh, all have ornamental rat symbols. A Bentley and a white BMW estate had been parked at the two-storey house with a cut-stone facade.
Manchester-born Isaac, a security company boss who had once revelled in his notorious hard man image, had been a regular visitor to West Cork with his late father since the mid-1990s. He said, at last month’s court hearing in Bantry, he brought his girlfriend to Cork to “start a new life”.
Associated with a number of top crime gangs in both Manchester and London, he had described his life in Britain as horrible. His most recent imprisonment in Britain was at Croydon Crown Court in July for sending abusive texts to his girlfriend’s ex-partner. After his release in late August, he arrived in Durrus. ......
Isaac, a professional boxer who won several bouts in the heavyweight division in the 1990s, was reportedly in good shape, keeping himself fit. He was easily identified by three, teardrop tattoos just below the eye. The symbolic tattoo generally has no fixed meaning but is normally associated with some connection to prison.
Isaac had been jailed for three years in Manchester in 2005 for possession of revolver ammunition, but in separate British trials over the past decade, he was acquitted of murder, blackmail, and assault.
In one case in 2010, he was also acquitted of threatening to kill an English businessman’s wife and children if he did not hand over €3m. The acquittal came after he received a character reference from world champion boxer Ricky Hatton, who had described Isaac as being a great inspiration
