Anyone ever try it?
Been around for 50 years or more. Getting alot of press recently. Some powerfull people swear by it.
Worthwhile or bunk ? Thoughts?
-
Yes, I do it all the f*cking time! >:(
Some people do it when trying to cut back on internet porn masturbation, or so I've heard.

I meditate regularly but don't specifically practice transcendental meditation. I find there is a lot of spiritual nonsense attached to the TM that is unnecessary. Ive personally found that it is possible to reap the benefits of meditation without believing the metaphysical new age trope associated with it.

I agree. A lot of truth to your statements.
David Lynch is a big proponent of transcendental meditation and he's also quite annoying. Here's an old video with the guy talking about TM, from UC Berkely.

Funny this topic came up. I was looking at videos about it. Costs about 1500 bucks to learn i hear

That's the problem, TM is fucking expensive. I would suggest Zen training, affordable and much more than just meditating.

Maybe it was a synchronicity. :)
Not sure I would pay the money though. I'd buy a light and sound machine, such as the Procyon, instead - it's like meditation on steroids and even "beginners" can experience some neat states.
I've got the Procyon and I highly recommend it.

This is with brain waves and binaural beats?

This is with brain waves and binaural beats?
It alters brain wave activity (backed by eeg-studies) through visual and auditory stimulation.
Photic stimulation is more powerful than auditory and I usually focus on that but the Procyon has built in programs with binaural beats.
Think of the visual stimulation as a stroboscope, but with all kinds of neat colors and shapes. You can see some really spectacular things sometimes, depending on what your brain is up to.

I make my own BBs and I also make isochronic and monaural beats sessions. I know what I'm doing though. 8)

LOL!
A hedge fund manager described it as being a mental ninja and seeing your problems in slow motion, after mastering the technique.
Does it require a specific mantra? Does it have to be in sanskrit?

Not all it seems. ;D
I'm not sure how to adress your argument, considering how you chose to respond to my link, so I'll just leave it at that. :-*

Mental ninja sounds great. ;D
You could use a mantra but just focusing on your breathing, in and out, would have the same effect. Not sure if this is an "appropriate" TM-teaching though but opinions seem to differ.
There's much nonsense regarding TM, such as keeping your mantra secret and other stuff. Just find a way you enjoy and go for it, whether it be TM or some other type of meditation.

I'm not going to explain it to you... :-\
I actually prefer being "not worthy" of a response from you. I think we both can save some time that way. Have a nice evening Mr E.

All you have to do is focus on your breathing. If a thought enters your head, recognize it and let it go and go back to focusing on your breathing. It is much harder than it sounds. You will find that you will get caught up in a thought for several minutes before realizing. Over time with practice you get better a focusing on the present and this is what is beneficial.
yes good advice

I've found that the key is to not fight the feelings and thoughts but to let them pass.

Overstimulate the brain making you unable to appreciate the real thing.

Ok here's my story about meditation expirience i had.
I did it for 6 months long time ago, i used to do it in the dark, sitting on the couch with eyes closed. I improved with every session that i did. Its very neat when u become without any thaughts. I had some struggles in the beginning, some sessions scared me. After 2 months of doing it every day i developed this tension in my forehead while meditating, it kinda hurts. But i still decided to go trough with it, and then it hit me BOOM the tension stopped and my pineal gland chakra opened. It was a nice ride, lots of neat stuff,my body felt light as a feather like floating, the white light that filled my head was spectacular, it felt like i was on the best drug, you feel absolutely wonderful, you cant describe the feeling with anything in this world. It takes a lot of patience. Im still not sure what to think of it all, it could all be imagionary, im not sure if it even benefits health.
-
Why not take it up again, sounds like you have the inclination for it, and that's a great 'experience' you shared.
-
I dont know, it was just a hobby and i grew out of it. I just dont see the benefit, i dont think meditation is for everyone, it can be creepy, i think yoga has more benefit.

Perhaps for physical health and release of bodily tensions but a calm mind aids in a relaxed body which is important for good health.

You re only calm for one hour after the session, after that you just get on with your business in this 5 sence reality. When you re very good at it it can be contra-productive, a lot of folks go full blown mental, they get confused and cant deal with the 5 sences reality. If you want to do it my advice is stay playful in the session, dont take it too serious.

Why would anyone cut back on Internet porn masturbation?
Because it may interfere with your dopamine signaling system, making you less of a man - both in a mental (lack of concentration among other things) and physical way (erectile dysfunction when with real women).
The text below adresses "internet addiction" but have in mind that porn often is a stronger stimuli than Facebook/Getbig and the detrimental effects coming from an addiction would also be worse. Combine the two, high speed internet and tabbed porn browsing, and you got a recipe for f*cking up your brains reward system - and after prolonged use a miserabel existence.
"Neuroscientists have recently isolated addiction-related brain changes that could account for cognitive impairment, such as decreased gray matter in the frontal cortex and disorganized white matter. Not surprisingly, brain studies show that Internet addicts suffer from impaired inhibitory control and increased impulsivity.
Brain studies on Internet addicts also reveal another change that can impair concentration: a measurable decline in dopamine signaling. Dopamine is central to concentration, focus, motivation and memory formation, and low dopamine signaling is strongly associated with poor working memory and ADHD.
Boredom warning sign. It appears that inattention (which in turn impairs memory) is really caused by lack of motivation (reduced D2 dopamine receptors). Tasks seem boring or uninteresting. Decreased dopamine signaling in the brain's reward circuitry is a hallmark of all addictions. " - YBOP
