Title: OK.. guy paid me with an 7" ipad.. don't think it's his.. can the owner lock it?
Post by: ESFitness on October 03, 2013, 09:55:59 PM
had a guy who'd owed me for weeks.. I tell him just make a fucking effort.. you've owed me x-amount for weeks, and yet I see you come in with a new phone, new shoes, it's disrespectful to me.. what am I supposed to think.. make a fucking effort to pay SOMETHING so I don't have to think you've stolen from me.

so he offers an ipad mini 7" thing.. I say, what the hell, sure...

now, I'm an android guy.. dunno shit about apple, I have an ipod touch, 2 ipod nanos, and a shuffle that I NEVER use... screens are too damn small compared to my phone....

so, I scroll through this ipad and see email and facebook stuff that isn't in this dudes name..

now, i'm not about to go and contact the person, because for all I know it was stolen and he's gonna call the cops and the cops are gonna ask me where I got it... and i'm not one to be talking to cops about anything, let alone telling them anything... EVER.

so, can the owner of this ipad trace it with GPS? or can he remotely lock it? I know they can track down iphone's with GPS.... or am I good to go with it?

it's not like I have much use for an ipad anyways, it's barely bigger than my phone.. and I use a laptop... and I'm not freakin paying for apple apps.... i'd probably just give it to my kids to use.

Dude, bad news. Lots of people have tracker/gps apps. I have one on my phone and my iPad. Especially if this is a Creatine related sale, this seems too risky to be worth fucking with.

By the way, how did it get to him owing you? Cash up front seems the best rule of thumb, no exceptions!

Can't you wipe the whole thing and essentially remove all those trackers?

Cutler is always looking for kitchen and landscaping and g4p help. Maybe this guy could work for Cutler and make enough in protein powder to sell on ebay and then pay you off.

nah, no creatine.. I hooked him up with a brand new inzer bench shirt, single prong belt and case of protein (4 pack).. gave me $50 up front and said he'd pay the rest later... i wasn't losing sleep over the money, it was the fact he just didn't "feel the need to pay me"... i'd known him for a while so didn't think it'd be an issue.

ipad's sure as hell ain't at my house. lol.

Somewhat related ... I just bought an $80, Google, 7 inch 'thing' that looks and works similar to an iPad and just finished setting it up with my email address and credit card info.

That information is common in all these things so I have to assume that there would be some way to trace it.

Could  be wrong though because these things are new to me but  .... it works great!!!

Even with a hard reset and firmware changed apple can find it with the gps and iPad turned off. I'd get rid of that thing if you think it mite be stolen. Take that slackers new shoes and tell him you want your cash next week or your taking his new phone

The shoes and the phone are probably hot. At least you can't track shoes.

I'd never accept anything other than cash. To me it's insulting when someone tries to change a deal and trade stolen property instead of paying me my money.

Yes you can. Once restored/wiped you can no longer track/find/locate it or whatever.

well, the likelihood me this dipshit accepting me returning it is slim.. and i'm never gonna get anything out of him.. so this is better than nothing.

and i'm 'retarded'? fuck your mother. how's that for 'retarded', chump?

if the guy said he couldn't pay and he was sorry, i'd have no problem.. it's the disrespect that gets me.... anybody's disrespect for that matter.

the money isn't the point, I won't go hungry over it and my lights will stay on... if I was RELYING on the cash, then maybe i'd be "retarded", but unlike you, i'm not a broke chump living check to check.

i'll leave it where it is until I can find out more about doing a hard reset.

Turning off "Find My iphone" or erasing your device requires your Apple ID and password . find my iphone can also continue to display a custom message, even after your device is erased. and your apple ID and password are required before anyone can reactivate it. which means your device is still your device. no matter where it is.

 Your call.

lol @ the ppl thinking I stole an ipad.

if I wanted an ipad, i'd buy one myself. if I wanted any tablet, i'd buy one myself... that's not the point. the point is the guy owed me for weeks.. actually months... and everytime I see him he acts like he doesn't owe me shit when I helped him out with some extra PL gear (bench shirt was too big, as was the inzer belt and I've had them for a few years sitting in my closet, rather than return them I just ordered different sizes) and protein I had.

I wanted to stop clear the debt just so I wouldn't have to think about it everytime I saw him.. wasn't about the money.

and i'm not gonna put myself in the position to be talking to any cops, or anybody else for that matter and answering where I got it. so "returning it", however the fuck i'd do that, isn't high on my list of things to do in the next few days.

if he would've offerened to wash my car, I would've taken it. what the fuck do I need an ipad for? apple sucks.

Do you run a gym or similar? If it were me, I'd label it lost/found and just leave it in the office for a month or two. If no one comes for it, I'd figure it was fine.

that's where it is. we get ipads, tablets, iphones, androids every day. the iphone ppl show up within an hour and usually leave them on a recombant bike... ipads and tabs, I dunno how anybody "loses" or "forgets" about those things they're so big.

can't say I ever recall anybody "tracing" their phone back to the gym, they usually know where it is I guess, or i'll recognize the phone and email them... if it's a pretty girl or girl I used to date, i'll FB them.. lol... the dudes gotta find theirs like a grown up. lol

#2.. I'm not into explaining how I came into possession of the ipad.

#5.. For all I know, the guy who's ipad it is... i'm fairly certain it's not the guy who I got it from... could've had it stolen from his house, or car, or something... and by me being a "nice, concerned citizen, doing the right thing" and returning, NOW I have to talk to cops and explain to them who I got it from, or else they'll think *I* fucking stole it..... are you people DENSE?! or are you RATS!? if you have no problem naming names to police, then good luck with life in "bodybuilding" because if you do recall, many of the 'supplements' you may use are fucking illegal, and the people you may get them from might 'rethink' supplying to a rat who's may or may not be a MORON.

It's stolen.  And you openly talk about receiving stolen property on a public forum on the Internet?

Return it to the owner or turn it into the police.

If you do anything else you are a schmuck.  And a thief.

I say, what the hell, sure...

so, can the owner of this ipad trace it with GPS? or can he remotely lock it? I know they can track down iphone's with GPS.... or am I good to go with it?

it's not like I have much use for an ipad anyways, it's barely bigger than my phone.. and I use a laptop... and I'm not freakin paying for apple apps.... i'd probably just give it to my kids to use.

Ask the dude who gave it to you to unlock it.  That should be entertaining.

If you wanted to return it, you could figure out a way. You don't have to be a snitch. You don't have to incriminate yourself....although by keeping the ipad you are since it is obvious it did not belong the person who paid you off with it.

No big deal really, half the folks who posted here said it could be traced and the other half said it couldn't. It is obvious you want to keep it and use it. It is also obvious (from what you've said) that it is stolen and you know that it is. Keeping it is a gamble. You may be okay or you may be a thief, albeit indirectly.

im an indirect thief eh.... well, don't you get social security and medicare? that's the pot calling the kettle black.

I have no use for an ipad.. or any tablet.. other than to let my kids play with it. i'd just as soon throw it in the trash.

Some decent points here.

ESF bro, this is NOT worth getting attention from the cops should the owner track you down. Give the iPad back to this shitty customer,  demand real $$$ or tell this clown to never speak to you again.

that'd require me holding onto it until I saw him.. could be a few days, could be a couple weeks.. could be longer, esp if he thinks I know it's a bogus item and i'm pissed... hell, he already knows I was pissed at the disrespect he was showing me after I helped him out.

Just admit it. You were hoping we would justify you keeping what you obviously know is stolen property. It is stolen and you have it in your possession. The law says that it goes back to the owner and all those who profited along the way, lose.

My dad once bought two antique vases at a swap meet. When he tried to sell them to an antique dealer, that dealer discovered they were stolen. The police were called in. My dad wasn't charged with anything, but the vases were taken as evidence. Whatever he paid for them was lost.

This is the easiest solution. Just do it!

Look you goon, it was you who started this thread looking for advice. I could give a rip about your stupid business deals which go sour. Keep the fucking ipad if that's what you want to do. Just don't ask for others to be complicit in you stupidity and illegal activities. And whether you believe it or not, you were looking for support and justification. If you don't see that, it is you who is clueless.

had a guy who'd owed me for weeks..

PMSL....

You do realize that you are admitting to a crime, here right?

Funny thing is - even if the guy didn't steal it, you are still committing an offense!

It's stolen.  And you openly talk about receiving stolen property on a public forum on the Internet?

Return it to the owner or turn it into the police.

If you do anything else you are a schmuck.  And a thief.

It's worse than that - he doesn't know for sure it's stolen but he is openly stating that he suspects it is and intends to keep it. That in itself is the crime, regardless of whether the iPad was stolen or not.

And he calls other people "RATS" 'cause they talk to the police. Only one thing worse that a Rat - that's some loudmouth wannabee who gets people into trouble by shooting his mouth off all over the place.

that's right... you're not into admitting 'illegal' stuff on the internet... unless it's to a 12yr old boy you met in a chatroom.

More transference. You are laughable and completely transparent. You are the one with stolen property here, not me.
