Title: Why is it that there are no women of color in the Mags
Post by: gettinhuge on December 31, 2005, 10:35:51 PM
First welcome to 2006 I hope it gives you better Joy than 2005. Anout a year ago I had this discussion with a freind of mine about why when Mags like flex Magazine or others do a spred of Fitness and figure ladies in there photo shoots its all white with Titles like hoy Divas or the most finest women in lingerie and they are all white.....like there no women of color to place in there yet when i see there boths at mr o or the Arnold they want my support. Dont get me wrong i beleive all women are hott and thats just it all women....where is your variety...no where just recently Flex did a lingerie spread and they had fitness figure and ecen women from WWE yet no were black asian maybe Latino but its hard to tell when there are latino women who die there hair and make sure that their appearence dosen't look too latino...Its like back in the Forty when only real light skin women of color was allowed to act on film with white actors becuase they was able to pass moreso for white than black...like the movie "Imatation of life"......Give women of color a chance aswell. let me here it ladies what do you say about this.

I think that because of the small percentage of competitors that actually make it into FLEX spreads, combined with the small percentage of competitors/models of a non-white race, the odds are so minimal that you rarely see them in the Mags.  Although, Alicia Denson is making her mark now that she's signed with Weider.  Anna Level has been in quite a few times, as have Lisa Lowe and Stacy Simons.  You also have to consider that the athlete might not be aggresively marketing themselves to get into the magazines.  I've been trying for 3 years and haven't made it yet!  :)

And on a personal note, I don't think that just because a woman is a particular race/ethnicity that she deserves to be in the mags moreso than another... there are plenty of beautiful, hardworking women in the industry.  Heck, I think we all deserve to be in the mags, but that's in a perfect world!

Well you mentioned Athletes well in the percentage I looked at and to most of the competetive women of color I have spoken with the market there ass off and no account......Its been along time since Lisa lowe step of the stage and one of the reason she left is becuase they was looking for the big implants girl when she competed and this before figure came into play. When Muscular Development changed their mag from the all natural to what they have now the layouts started with women layouts...none of these women competed. Like I said the last layout had WWE stars up in there. You metioned women of color from as far back as 1998 when they had  modonna Grimes on there. its now 2006.

I think its crap.....what these photogeaphers are doing its eye candy for males for us to buy the mags a good percentage of these women are approached how often are they women of color approached.

And im not saying that a women should get it becuase of color but you mean to tell me the criteria you set to choose a women only women that fit the profile are white......come on

Um, that just confused me even more, lol.  And I said nothing of the sort - I believe you put those words in my mouth.

The whole race and gender thing came up when I joined the Army, too.  To get rank as an NCO, you have to submit a photo and profile - why should that even matter if they are looking at leadership skills?  Because they HAVE to choose so many women, so many blacks, so many hispanics, etc.  It doesn't matter if there are 50 white males who've qualified for a position, they will get the shaft so the Army can meet their race and gender quota.  My point is, our society has tried so hard not to be race-biased, that often times less qualified personnel get a job over the highly-qualified and rightfully-deserving applicant.  (It's simple mathematics that if you have 10 "X" applicants and 60 "Y" applicants, a "Y" will more than likely get picked.)

There have been many successful models, politicians, celebrities, etc of EVERY race, and many of the most talented have been black, hispanic, or for lack of a better term, "non-white."

And about the names I listed, there is a layout on flexonline.com right now with Lisa and Stacy.  (OT, I know why Lisa retired, but what's that have to do with this topic?)  And you failed to comment on Alicia Denson, who is in every mag almost every month, and just got an Oxygen cover this month.  A few months before that, Mocha Lee graced Oxygen's cover.  I also just remembered that Alexis Ellis just had a spread in IronMan not too long ago.  Tanji Johnson also had a spread in one of the Flex lingerie/swimsuit issues earlier this year.

And finally, you or I will never know how often certain women are/aren't approached.  You or I will never know "how hard" anybody markets themselves.  Some people get lucky breaks because they "have a certain look" and if that isn't subjective, I don't know what is.  Some people just use racism to start arguments where racism was never even an issue.

I'm white, I'm trying to get into the mags... maybe I don't have "the look."  But since I'm white, and mostly white women grace the mags, I can't use racism as a reason why I haven't gotten in the mags yet.  Maybe it's because I'm blonde, or a redhead, or because I have implants?  You see where I'm going with this, how ridiculous it can sound and how out of hand it can get?  If you allow yourself, you can come up with a million and one reasons why black women aren't in the fitness mags, and racism is the best argument, which is probably why it comes up so often.

If you and other men want to see other women as eye candy in the mags, then you should speak up and write the editors.  They won't make a change if they don't see a problem.  So get your butt out there and send your emails to the editors, and get other guys to do the same.  Fight for what you want to see, and hopefully you'll get it.

Im sorry but as a white women of course you will never recognize raceism and blatin overlooking of someone.....just recently ambercrombie and finch was cited for racial tactics in there hiring prefrence but that just a tid bit on corporate america doing its thing especially to women.

And please I dont read Oxygen Im talking of the Mags I see Flex, Planet Muscle.

Im not ripping you but i really dont think you understand what being in a society that talks one way and does another...when these type of practice are not geared towards you....In other words when was raceism done to you...but i do think you may understand gender inequality.

I agree its not a whole lot of them, but I know Lisa Lowe and Stacy Simmons have been in sexy lingerie layouts in FLEX..........Amber Littlejohn (mix) in Ironamn magazine's Hardbody.......Lenda Murray a LOT in her prime!! All beautiful ladies IMO!! :)
I think you should write to the publications and let them know.........at least it doesn't hurt ;)

Bottom line is that racism still exsits and the editors of the mags are white men that control who gets in the mags (blonde hair, blue eyes).

I'm sure you are right in that I will never be able to relate to that situation.  However, I do know that if one has a problem with something, they should act to change that, instead of just complain.

Flex hardly features ANY women anymore... and the only women they primarily feature are those with M&F/Weider contracts... most of the women are the same that have been in the mags for years now.

One i just dont complain I do take action...when pump magazine came out and I subcribe the mags was fill of it....but i not only complained that these were all just white women but they wasnt even fitness or figure personalities that made me even more upset.

I have written flex more than one time.

when I wrote muscular development they told me no need to worry becuase it will not be part of there magazine anymore and i look and its true.

But i want to hear from more women of color who is trying to make it in this industry....we herd from Dina i want more input.

I think you ladies who actually compete do not even think about color lines. You guys are great. However, The Men!!! That controll the images that we see in the mags and on T.V. are older Whte men. I can't blame them for what they like. For instance Hugh Heff owner of Playboy. He likes what he likes. Some day we will all see more of a variety, but for now we have a way to go.

I am alot more interested in seeing a beautiful sexy white woman over a black woman anyday. Except for the types that look like Halle Berry or are as sexy. They need that cute face and alot of Black Woman in my opinion have that Amarosa look and kind of have that attitude like she is all that. A sexy white chick has that innocent look and are flat out more sexy looking.

Aloha all,

People always ask me, how did i get my start in modeling for the fitness mags 8 yrs ago.

Well here is my short story:

 MY name is Sasha Ogata,

I Started modeling at the young age of 17, Yes 17.

I always wanted to model, for my older sister was a model. So i did everything i had to do to perfect my look and my body.

By the time i was 21 i was looking pretty fucking hot, so i became a Stripper. I now work in Las Vegas.  SO now i have two jobs that require me to Keep healthy and fit.

When i was in my 30's i was modelling for a  few different adult websites- and a well know photographer saw my on the net and tried to contact me for months, but my photographer that i was working with at the time, did not want to give my where abouts to this new photographer. SO after many months of looking , he found me at the gym.

I took a few shots with him, he sent my pics to a few Muscle mag's and i got published within 3 months of my test shoot.

 The rest is history.

I have been published in the fitness world now for the last 8 yrs.  I don't see myself slowing down anytime soon. I have been very lucky that i have a huge fan base.  I am lucky that there is people out there that think out of the normal box that people want to try and keep us all in.

I have made my dreams come true..................I never let anyone tell me NO !

I knew I could model, I knew that I was the only one that was going to make this happen, so I put my best face forward and hit the gym. I turn 42 yrs old this March, and i dont see myself slowing down any time soon.

Now I am a  International Cover Model, I have worked in T.V and in movies.

So no matter what your dream maybe, Dont let anyone tell you NO.

 Sasha Ogata

I try my best with what i have given myself. Well I sure do want to thank all my doctors also....lol.....

So i guess my point is true....

why are you so mean to me, not that i care so much.
But if you dont know me, why so much hate for me.....

your opion is yours to voice, thats kool. but your nothing but mean to anyone that you dont deem normal in your eyes..

Seems to me, No matter how much money people have they always seem to have a opion about something that they themselves dont understand, or accept.

Not everything in this world, is Black and white.  there always is a gray area.

Bottom line is that racism still exsits and the editors of the mags are white men that control who gets in the mags (blonde hair, blue eyes).

Yes, Michael, but it's a deeper issue than that.

From a pure numbers standpoint, what is the breakdown of total white vs. non-white female competitors?

I would think there would alot more white women than non-white and that being the case, the proportionate number would be white.

You can't really force magazines to display women they don't feel would help promote their magazine or help it sell.  That's basic economics.  If I was the owner of a magazine I would put women on the cover that I found attractive, and who I thought my core base would like also.  It's a subjective judgement, nothing that can be argued in terms of racial politics.

Reality is what it is.

These magazines exist to sell ads and subscriptions so that they can remain in business.  They're not here to promote any socio-economic equality - that's not their agenda.

Im saying if you take a magazine and you look at all the covers that they have done in 12 months, mst of the covers will be of white people. They will have few Covers with people of any color. How many Asian,Black,Indian, women/men do you see on the covers of any fitness magazine?   I would have to say not many. I have had a few covers in my life, and im very happy that i got them, but there are only a few women of color on  covers every year....

I wanted to make some points about this subject since I never did when it was being discussed.

The issue about what I'll describe as shade skin women versus very light skin women goes back to the height of magazine sales in the modern fitness era of the 2nd half of the 90's. The magazines have always leaned towards the stereotype of female paleskin "hotties" only being beautiful when reality is not what the image is. We all know who were on the covers of Muscle&Fitness, MuscleMag, Oxygen, and other real fitness related publications. There were some exceptions to the repeated cycle of monthly models on magazine covers. I'm not afraid to say that women with dark complections were discouraged from being placed on the front cover. I'm saying that the fear of taking that chance made it hard to do that very often. Just look at how I'm describing certain fitness ladies as shade skin women basically because I don't want to stick to the tired label of calling them black or african-american. Honestly, why would the term black or "A-A" be applied to someone such as the second Fitness Olympia champion who is Danish. Compare other fitness beauties who look similar to who I just referred to and understand the truth about the actual color of skin versus the ugly word that is said when contrasted with the word that is colorless.

The cover is the most important page of a magazine. That is how you lure people at the paper store.

All magazines will put what they think will sell the most mags on the cover.

If anyone has a problem with this, they need to work against racism in the society. Not trying to make magazines making cover who will sell less.

Another thing besides that is that there are indeed certain requests that are made by some of the big name photographers and publishers that just have to be granted based on doing what it really takes to get the media exposure you want in this selfish industry.

I think the problem is not the magazines, but the people who buy them. If women with orange skin sold more magazines, most women on the magazines would be orange. Call it what you like but its what the society in this day and age is lured to. Most women who dye their hair dye it what color? Blonde, right? The cool thing about society is that its slowly changing its idea of beauty. Look at people nowadays. Women and men get burnt under the sun trying to get darker skin tones.

I am not involved in bodybuilding or anything so I cannot vouch for this first hand, but from what I see in the forums, and magazines it seems as if bodybuilding is one of the least racist sports. In football until recently it was a big deal if there was a black qb. They would cast doubt on their abilities and so on. Look at bodybuilding, even though Sergio spoke about racism he was still Mr. Olympia in the late 60's. How many other sports had a non white champion at that time?

The look that made the magazines push the envelope appropriately was during the modern years when the FAP champions got exposure as well as when the number one so called blond became the best model in the swimsuit issues of FLEX and other publications. That image got taken to a excessive level by others who just couldn't pull off the same yellowish look that one person perfected. That might prove that one bright color of a model isn't always the best looking.

What else is there to say?

The people who promote certain products have the right to decide 1) whom they wish to market to and 2) how they want to do it.  When the diet/nutritional supplement industry decides that the non-White market is worth pursuing, then you'll begin to see more women of color (Blacks, Latinas, Asians, etc) pushing those products.

What's stopping Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Alex Rodriguez or Michelle Wie, etc. from using their resources to start such a company?  That's a hypothetical, of course, but even though there are many people of all races in the (competitive) fitness industry, diet products are marketed primarily to Whites.

There is nothing necessary wrong with having any number of shade color women on a cover or in the centerfold spreads as long as they are attractive and good looking and that magazine sells as many copies as it could.

On the other side of that, there aren't many who can pull off that labeled blond yellow look like one or two or three or more fitness females who try to take it to a sick extreme.

Now, let me give you the definitive answer to this. There are actually a few reasons why we don't use more ethnic women in the mags, specifically T'n'A mags.

1. There just aren't that many out there approaching photographers to get in shoots.

2. The industry in dominated by white girls, and they are the popluar ones we want in the mags. If the top 5 were black, then THEY would be the ones in the mags.

3. We don't stop ANYONE from being in the mags, but we don't hunt them down either, mainly we work with people that come to us.

There is no conspiracy or racial tones to why more ethinic women don't appear in the mags, in the end it's what the readers want, and 99% want what you see every month.

And Dina was right, she isn't white, blonde OR blue eyed, and she has been in almost more than anyone! :)

Do you straighten your hair?

If yes, then you're trying to fit the "whitey" mold to some degree IMHO.

No offence mate. I think Erykah Badu looks awesome, she doesn't straighten her hair.

I think Bronx brings up an important point that I first learned from Skip LaCour.

People think that the Mags "go looking for models" once they have won a contest or there has been some "buzz" about them. That is rare, indeed.

Opportunities are CREATED by the athlete and/or her agent AND usually at their own expense.

While there are occasional models that are "in demand", more often than not the athlete has to create their own photo ops.

I think what you said sums it up very well because there is no need to be controversial. The best looking models are the ones that should be appearing in the pages of muscle magazines regardless of your ethnicity. I've seen a certain amount of diversity and that is realistic because there are minorities that got exposure in a number of major magazines that probably did sell very well during the time when pro fitness became exceptionally explicit with all the sexercise that was shown.
