A black teenager is shopping for justice — claiming snooty Barneys staffers and New York City cops racially profiled him for credit card fraud after he bought a $349 belt.
Trayon Christian, 19, told the Daily News he filed a lawsuit after he was targeted by staffers at Barneys’ Madison Ave. flagship store and detained by police because they didn’t believe a young black man could possibly afford to buy such an expensive belt.
But he got no more than a block from the store when two undercover NYPD detectives stopped him near E. 60th St., the lawsuit said.
“They said my card wasn’t real, it was fake. They said someone at Barneys called to report it,” said Christian.
The male detectives — whose names he never learned — asked to see ID and look in his bag, he said.
They also asked him if he worked, and where.
“I showed them my school ID and my driver’s license,” said Christian, who was 18 when the incident allegedly occurred.
“I kept thinking, ‘Why is this happening to me?’” he said.
He was handcuffed and taken to the 19th Precinct stationhouse, he said.
According to his lawsuit, he was detained in a holding cell for about two hours.
He was then released with his debit card, his belt and an apology from the police, Christian said.
A spokeswoman for the NYPD denied Christian was detained for two hours, saying he was brought into the precinct at 7:04 p.m. and was allowed to leave at 7:45 p.m.
“Mr. Christian was held in police custody for approximately 42 minutes and as soon as we determined that the card was authentic, he was immediately released,” said Inspector Kim Royster.

Apple Brotini is a damn good drink if served in a mug. I've learned that no drink is gay if you drink it from a mug and belch after every sip. It's the manly thing to do.

I've been fucked with by the police in my youth just as much as anyone else. Met some decent cops, met some asshole cops. Didn't mean I had to go to the news like a little bitch for attention. Fuck that kid. Going around with a victimization mentality will net him jack shit in life.
Do agree that if u pay 350 for a belt you are a chump though.

The point is that store clerks are now profiling. People who have trouble giving you correct change are profiling. THAT is what is so scary about this. Fuck those bitches, they should swipe, smile and shut up.
Also, you think it is normal that you are harrassed by the police? ??? Jesus, fuck the US.

The first sentence I kinda rolled my eyes but on the second about the clerks who can't even count change...ya that is pretty much bullshit.
At the same time, look at the picture of that young man, that is the look of a defeated beta male looking for sympathy and who is likely to get smoked in the current market place we are in. People aren't doing young people like him a service by drawing attention to this nonsense.

Pretty fucked up story... just one comment:
The male detectives — whose names he never learned — asked to see ID and look in his bag, he said.
Repeat after me: "I do not consent to any searches and will not answer any questions. Am I being detained or am I free to go?"

Haha yeah let's start a rally.
Start matching in the streets! :D

tree fiddy for a belt?
The amount of stuff I could buy and flip for $100 profit of that $350....Generation nothingess.

This.
And spending 350 on a belt at Barney's, bet this Hebrew loves the cock.
-
And don't get me wrong here. I fully support discrimination. If that's what the company wants to do, then I would support them. Their money, their decision. They should be allowed to have a "no blacks served here" sign.
But letting this kid in, and then ratting a paying customer out to the police is pathetic.
-
I don't care what the belt cost as long as it keeps this kid's pants around his waist.

Newsflash, there is no "now", but that have been...
As a matter of fact there have been many instances whites who decide to steal to include a black person or two, because they know that the stores will profile and watch where the black people go, and not watch them, and they get off...
As far as this kid goes...these detectives were stupid in asking those questions...and also not doing an investigation with the store first---the store cashiers would know if the credit card was fraudulent or not, and then called the police. If it was fraudulent, then the police get involved and do a thorough investigation...

Profiling is just being smart. If a segment of the population is commiting a massively disproportinate nber of crimes, that is who you watch more carefully.

Well.......that wasn't very bright of those officers or the store. Considering that Jay-Z is planning to release a line of clothing to Barney's, he's prob going to have a nice talk with them now.
But getting back to the kid..I wouldn't spend 349 dollars for a belt.

Profiling is just being smart. If a segment of the population is commiting a massively disproportinate nber of crimes, that is who you watch more carefully.
The crime he committed was he came in to the shop, selected an item, paid for it by VALID credit card, and left. That's bullshit. If the card he used had been issues to Yoshe Goldstein 15 years ago, then okay, call the cops.
-
Prostitution or drug money. From the looks of him, I'd say both.
-
Still never said where the hell he got the money from or if he had a job.
-
Any time a low income black youth makes a purchase that expensive there should be an automatic investigation as most likely the money he paid with was acquired from illegal activity.
-

But this isn't just about watching, which on some level we'd be partially ok with. They acted on a profile, which is the point when that shit is corrupt.
It's events like this that keep people down in society whether or not your intelligent enough to acknowledge them. Aggregates are the force of civilization, and how they build has a great effect on the people.

Illegal activity or government money. Possible government money through illegal activity such as selling food stamps on craiglist was most likely the case here.

you are making an assumption that he is "low income"...could have a rich parent, family member...
Your assumption is just as bad as the detectives making their statements. And it was paid for with a valid credit card...
Now as far as him getting into trouble with his credit for purchasing 300 dollar belts, that is another thing.

"The credit card was actually fake, but that's not the point, Christian said. The real issue is that I was targeted based on the color of my skin. Sure, I had a phony card made from a stolen number that I bought on the internet, but they didn't know that. It's racist!"

Guy's one consonant away from being gunned down. He should consider himself lucky.

LOL.
Barney's has cause to question large purchases that seem suspicious. A young kid (not sure how he was dressed), buying only a belt, with a credit card, what time of day was this was not sure, seems like the store has cause to raise suspicion.
No lawsuit against the police with state immunity unless they can prove it wasn't in good faith and reasonable.
Tough luck for the kid. However, you never know the whole facts of a situation though. I mean when a reporter's name is "Ginger" you know the story is going to be slanted. Maybe this kid was giving off that young punk attitude so prevalent today and raised even more red flags.

I agree with your state 99%...However there is a 1% chance that the store detectives throw something else in the kids bag and make it look like he stole it...The kid did the right thing and hopefully some people lose their jobs and the kid gets some dough out of the situation...
