I found out yesterday, in a very indirect way, that the company I currently work for (a major financial services firm) has been breaking the law for pretty much the past 5 years on 30% of all trading activity.
I did a rough estimate calculation and the amount of money transacted illegally is astronomical.
I am scared shitless because I did most of the paperwork behind these deals, unaware that what I was submitting was illegal.
I am thinking of bringing this up to the SEC.

I am not a director.
Traders will sell internal organs in the US if they could. They do not give a shit about anything aside from making money.
I personally think my manager is actually getting the legal department involved to make sure his ass is not in trouble. It's gotta be! If compliance actually finds out this sort of shit is going on they will storm out department like swat.

If you do find an attorney, and what you say is true, he will not be happy that you posted this information or anything in regards to the situation on an open internet forum.
In the future, when you run into what you think might be a serious legal/fraudulent situation, the best thing to do is say nothing to anyone except for your chosen attorney... behind closed doors. He will inform you that you are NOT to speak to ANYONE regarding your situation.
Now, the second thing, because it is obvious you have not been involved in this kind of thing before: Make sure that the attorney you choose does not have any association other than strict business with the opposition.
These guys make money off of eachother. In other words, if you are paying an attorney and there is $100,000 at stake, and you stand to either 1) lose and face jail-time or 2) win and receive an award ~ the opposition can easily pay off your attorney while you take the fall, if they stand a good chance of losing their case.
This is no conspiracy. These guys are all in bed together and have usually seen eachother in court numerous times. Possibly even on the green, or in fancy restaurants and strip-clubs.
You can't trust your attorney any more than you can trust yourself. It's their business and they are good at making money. Whatever means possible. They are slick.
The larger the company, the better the defense.
Mouth shut. Keep your attorney in check. Visit him (or her) often and continually know what they are doing in regards to your case.

So long as you believed the numbers you submitted were SUBSTABTIALLY CORRECT, you'll be ok. if your lawyer does even a half-ass job at looking for precedents, he'll find it (pm me and i'll give you the state it's easy to find in... it's a state that's probably the most friendly to finance law).
besides that, so long as you believed the numbers you were given were correct, you should be ok... even if you didn't do due diligence. Worst that'll happen is you'll be suspended from practice for a year.
that's a hell of a lot better than having a license and being unable to find work because nobody will hire a rat.

Send an email to your manager expressing your shock and horror at discovering that you were unknowingly implicated in what appears to be fraudulent activity. Start a paper trail ASAP.

Tough call - I'd consider the possibility that they could be putting you in the frame for it. If that's a possibility, then I'd go to the SEC.

Is it a fraudulent act in the sense of money laundering regulation?
Is it the sale of useless financial services ? Massive deal in UK right now with people being sold useless insurance policies on the back of loans etc., major banks having to pay billions in compensation.
Or is it a currency exchange rate manipulation type scenario?
Or maybe it is a trade in illegal substances?
Are you absolutely certain that fraud has taken place? What is the nature of this evidence?

No need to be vague if you hire the lawyer. He is legally unable to divulge anything you say to him if you retain his services. Find a lawyer that does criminal law, not some cousin of yours who is a real estate lawyer or something. Hire a criminal lawyer (a criminal defense lawyer i mean..all lawyers are really criminals :D) and tell him everything including details so that he can properly give you advices. If he decides your case is too difficult or whatever, he still cannot ever legally tell about anything you told him without facing severe criminal repercussions himself. Criminal defense lawyers are scumbags, but they are not stupid.
