Title: Getbigger at Surfers Paradise.
Post by: Vince B on January 21, 2014, 01:34:29 AM
At Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast in Queensland they have some equipment along the beach that people use for exercise. This bloke stopped in front of me and began chinning. Looked like he goes to a gym and was just pumping up to impress everyone. Naturally, I documented the occasion.

I emigrated from Canada in early January 2001. It was snowing in Vancouver and I vowed never to see that cold stuff again. I spent some time in Fiji along the way. Australia is like living in Florida or Mexico. Climate is great most of the year.

Surfers Paradise is just another tourist destination in Australia. I like it up in Queensland. The Gold Coast is quite modern and there is plenty of room for everyone. The whole east coast is amazing re beaches and scenery.

There is a lot of room on the beach at Surfers Paradise. When you see a crowded beach it is partly because the lifeguards supervise very small areas and put red and yellow flags to mark the outsides. If you swim outside the flags they can warn you to move back inside the area. It can get hectic in crowded areas because they allow kids with floating devices to go out and they can come in and hit you if you are not careful. Not sure why they allow boogie boards where people bodysurf or just wait and dip under waves.

In Sydney they no longer allow high rise buildings that cast a shadow on beaches. That was way back in 1973. In Surfers they have no such rule and even allowed The Soul building right next to the beach and it is over 70 floors high.

It is okay for those who want to stay out of the sun on these beaches. You can be sure to get sunburned if you don't stay under an umbrella or in a sun tent.

Have a look down the beach. Lots and lots of room. The beach extends for many miles. In the distance there are more beaches. At Surfers there are a lot of tourists in hotels, etc. In other places there are not that many people on the beach.

You can see how high some of the buildings are.

I haven't seen any trouble in the many visits to the Gold Coast.

Here is the incident you mentioned. Not at a gym but a road rage confrontation, perhaps.

There are two reports on the news that I have seen.

Vince, what is the economy like?  also can you delve further into the cost of living?  From a comfort standpoint what would you one would have to make to live comfortably with the most basic of things.

what it make a great retirement location or is it too expensive.  In the US you cannot retire here, it is just too expensive.

Do you see many cyclists or is it just too hot out. I think that I recall seeing some issues with the heat at the Australian open

Surfer's Paradise, and the Gold Coast in Australia in general, are one of the best places in the world.

Awesome weather, great food, cafes etc, beautiful beaches, rocking nightlife, hot chicks, friendly people, amazing surf, fun theme parks, beautful tropical rain forrests. I would highly recommend it to anyone to live, and also I think its probably one of the best places to invest in property right now as it will boom as the economy recovers and as Asians start investing there and the rest of the world discovers it and moves there! The have so many plans like building a bigger and better casino, cruise ship terminal, convention hosting etc. Commonwealth Games coming in 2018 so lots of infrastructure expansion going on and Osys live their sport. I plan to move there in the future.

Here's the official Gold Coast Tourism website http://www.visitgoldcoast.com/

When my wife first came to visit me in Oz I was living in Brisbane and wanted to show her the Gold Coast hinterland - probably my favourite place on earth. We visited Surfers a few days later.

Her first remark, coming from a mediaeval German town was "What is this place? Legoland?"

travisma has a point. My friends there tell me the bikies control everything now and crime is quite bad.

It's true there was some biker scum that moved there was a problem a while back. They've been either jailed or kicked out of town now by the Gold Coast mayor. Some of those finks even cried like babies in court and their gang closed soon after. My friends who surf there told me the locals had enough of them and mocked them and had zero respect for them and their bikes and tough guy jackets. They all got run out of town.

The Gold Coast is scum land…….Great place to visit. Shit hole to live.
Everyone over spent on house there and now they owe more than what they are worth…..

The Soul building is a great example. People paid HUGE deposits for apartments there. Then the whole economy dropped in QLD like nothing you have ever seen. It was cheaper to walk away from the deposit and buy exactly the same apartment for less….

Now if Vince wants to argue that let him. I friggin supplied that crap building. Lost money twice due to contractors. They had so many issues with the foundation hence it took so long to be built.

GO LOOK ON LINE AND SEE ALL THE VIDEOS OF THE BIKIE INCIDENTS THERE…. THEY ARE HEAPS.

The stabbings happened at Fitness First.

Quickerblade and trav you guys are out of touch.

Yes prices boomed and then fell. If you bought at the peak you are a fool. Now is the time to be buying as prices have come down are poised to boom due to immigration (both within oz and from overseas) and due to low interest rates.

As for empty shops, yes that was because there was a huge rail infrastructure project going on. It's nearly compete and surfers paradise will again soon thrive. My favorite places are actually mermaid beach and burleigh which I think will double in property values next 5 years

Here's the reality of demand to live in the good coast today from today's gold coat news: Massive demand:

Emma Maund inspects a house in Miami for her and four friends to share. Pic: Scott Fletcher Source: News Limited
DESPERATE prospective tenants are flooding agencies with applications and flocking to inspections as demand for rentals across the Gold Coast is at a four-year high.

Real estate agents, who say that in some instances more than 50 hopefuls have shown up at property inspections, put the demand down to construction jobs and the looming start of the university year attracting people back to the glitter strip.

The race to sign on the dotted line has also pushed renters to go above and beyond the usual application process, providing written references for pets and endorsements from their parents.

Real Estate Institute of Queensland Gold Coast zone chairman John Newlands said it was the highest demand he had seen in about four years.

"There is good demand and in some cases there are multiple applications on certain properties," he said.

"I think there are more people generally starting to move back to the Coast (after) an exodus over the past three or four years."

Mr Newlands cited preparation for the Commonwealth Games and the Pacific Fair redevelopment as two projects bringing people back to the city.

THE Real Estate-Miami property manager Mathew Davey said he had seen more than 50 people turn up to one inspection, which in most cases lasted just 15 minutes.

"I get letters from parents, I get a lot of people who are pet owners writing things about their pets and how well behaved they are," he said.

"I get people looking for weeks. Most of the horror stories are people with pets."

Mr Davey said rental prices were steady, but did not rule out an increase if strong demand continued.

Ray White leasing consultant Rebecca Palmer said family homes close to schools were in demand and university students were starting to seek rentals too.

"Because they are so desperate, they are just applying for anything and inspecting it after just to get ahead.," she said.

"Last Saturday we had 50 at one property in Coomera."

Hospitality worker Emma Maund, 24, and father-of-two Michael Rudkowski inspected a Miami four-bedroom home yesterday going for $550 a week and both said the market was tough.

"It is insane the amount of people turning up (to inspections)," said Mr Rudkowski, who has been on the hunt for a home for almost two weeks.

"It's a cattle call. There were 30 people at a home at Robina property one morning."

Ms Maund has been looking for a home to share with three friends for two months and said they had lost the race for two properties and attended countless inspections.

"At this time of year it's not easy to find property," she said.

"There's always at least three groups at each (inspection)."

Tips to get that home:

Fill out the entire application form and have your references in order.

Get applications in early, but keep in mind first in is not always best dressed.

Don't waste agents' time applying for properties you don't want.

Provide references for your pets.

Don't bother trying to start a bidding war. It's against the law in Queensland.

Be well presented at the inspection.

The government in Queensland is cracking down on motorcyle gangs. They have passed strict laws that stop gangs assembling at public places. Ordinary people with bikes aren't at all happy but the government has had enough.

I visit Queensland regularly and it is always a great place to go for tourists. I would rather live in Australia than America with the exception of Hawaii.

Bodybuilder at Surfers.

Do you ask permission before shooting pictures of strangers?

Unless you are selling your images, you do not legally need anyone’s explicit permission to take a picture in a public space, I personally think it is somewhat ethically dubious to share photos of people you do not know without asking.

Some photographers figure that as long as they make a concerted effort to contact the people I photograph out in public, they are absolved from ethical dubiety. That’s not true and there are some clearly defined legal boundaries.

Claims that people are owed compensation for published likenesses of themselves or their property are becoming more common, even though many are meritless. I advise on whether prospective uses are likely to violate an individual’s rights and represent parties involved in disputed claims.

Harassment of photographers has greatly increased in light of heightened concerns about security.

Sometimes I ask permission to take photos but usually I just shoot away in documentary style.

While we are usually free to take photos it is another thing displaying them. I haven't sold any photos nor used any for advertising. I certainly don't post photos to embarrass anyone.

If people are in tourist areas they will be in photos. Ditto for sporting events. Photographers have to use good judgement re showing their photos.

One of what I consider my best photos was taken during a pro surfing contest at Coolangatta a couple of years ago. When I posted it on Flickr someone took exception to it and asked if I had permission. I didn't know who she was and I didn't see her face. She was walking towards the surf and perhaps a 1000 people saw her. Maybe 200 people had cameras there, maybe more! When I posted the photo on dpreview some complained at first but eventually the consensus was that it was okay to shoot such photos and the gal looked great.

Here is that photo. Took a lot to edit out some unwanted distractions...some ugly rocks. One of the best figures I have seen at a beach.

I emigrated to Australia in Jan 1971. No regrets except it is a long way home and expensive to travel. I don't miss the winters one bit...never want to see snow again except in photos and on TV.

Here is a scene just after sunrise at Burleigh Heads. There are a lot of early risers doing things at and along the beaches up in Queensland. A great place to live for sure.

A photography mate of mine took this photo. At Putty Beach on the NSW Central Coast about 1 1/2 hours north of Sydney. I often carry several cameras when out on a photo trip. The harness allows me to carry 3 DSLR and I have two other cameras in my waist bag.

That way I don't have to change lenses. Sometimes I carry a full backpack with all the kit plus a 500mm Canon lens....and a big tripod. Great exercise and it keeps my calves over 17 1/2 inches.

Your photography skills are very good, btw.

I suspect I am somewhat more sensitive to the issue of seeking permission prior to photographing folks because I worked in primary education and the district I worked for had very clear rules disallowing photographing students without express permission from their parents.
You might be surprised to know that many parents even disallowed their kids be photographed for the class pictures taken on picture day. Almost all parents consented to individual photos because these are exclusive to them.

When I designed and built our schools webpage, which included photos of occupied classrooms, playground and other public areas, I had to get permission from the school district superintendent. This was quite a few years ago when people were less paranoid then they are these days.

Thanks for the compliment.

I used to teach high school so am aware of some of the rules and restrictions. Today, primary teachers can't put a bandaid on a pupil, nor can they give them a hug.

It is quite bizarre that some parents won't allow their children to be in class photos. That surely is going too far.

Here is a group of girls at Coogee Beach. I talked to them and asked about all the colours on them. They explained they were in a fun run to raise money for some charity. So I asked them to pose for me and gave them a link to my photos.

No worries here.

Not only are there great views and beaches but they have some fantastic trees in Australia. I found this giant tree on Mount Tamborine, which is about 25 km from Surfers. I had a tiny Gorilla tripod so secured it around the huge root and then set a 10 second delay and rushed to get into position and remain still for a time exposure of a few seconds. Not easy to do so I needed several goes to get it right. I used an 8-15 Canon fisheye lens which distorts the Picabeen Palm trees there. What a place those Rain Forests are.

Vince great pix. Hey a question for you. A while back some of the beach was eroded due to storms. Have they all been restored to normal now? Also has the light rail along the boulevard now started?

I didn't see much sand erosion on the Gold Coast a few weeks ago.

The light rail is operating at Southport but not at Surfers.

Hahahahaha….. That right? All gone are they? If you really think that then you really are not familiar with what is going on.

Go have a look at how many chapters there are still in QLD. Sure the Police are cracking down but they did the same in South Australia and still I have many friends riding around with no issues. Same in QLD. Don't believe everything you read on the paper or see on television.

big time, they do not exist here anymore. All clubhouses closed, not allowed to be in a group or wear clothes with club symbols. They have been prosecuted harsher than Jews in Nazi Germany.
Gone.

Well sorry you are out of touch with what is going on. Fortunately for myself whom works within the Hotel Industry the growth areas are still Perth, NSW & closely followed by Victoria.

The current climate for adding room accommodation within Queensland is at its lowest for almost ten years. No major redevelopment of Hotels and brands other than the Four Points which is in Brisbane not the Gold Coast. The Marriott just had a face change but no real money spent as the hotel is in financial strain.

Melbourne is adding over 2000 rooms in accommodation this year alone. Same as Sydney and huge developments there as well….

So the Gold Coast is pretty much crap

Quickerblade and trav you guys are out of touch.

Yes prices boomed and then fell. If you bought at the peak you are a fool. Now is the time to be buying as prices have come down are poised to boom due to immigration (both within oz and from overseas) and due to low interest rates.

As for empty shops, yes that was because there was a huge rail infrastructure project going on. It's nearly compete and surfers paradise will again soon thrive. My favorite places are actually mermaid beach and burleigh which I think will double in property values next 5 years

Hey Vince. I have a friend whom is quite a famous photographer. Joshua Holko. He is the first and only MOAB master in Australia…. Have a look at his website.

http://www.jholko.com

Funny… He gave up selling Home Automation products to become one of the best photographers in the world.

I didn't see any high rises under construction on the Gold Coast. The last tall building was the Soul building which was completed a couple of years ago or so.

I really don't care for 'progress' and development. The area is fine just the way it is. The only thing about the Gold Coast is it is spread out so you definitely need a car to get around.

Sorry about the quality of some photos but keeping panoramas below 500Kb isn't easy. Lots of detail is missing at this size.

Australia has two masters of photography. Peter Eastway and David Oliver. I have heard them speak at our camera club. To get that title you have to submit portfolios

over a long period and be accepted by a judging panel. I don't pay much attention to photography awards but always enjoy looking at new ideas and portfolios.

Not many make a living out of photography except for those who do weddings and maybe a few sports and commercial photographers.

When you are a frequent visitor you get to know some favourite places to take photos. One is by the Nerang River. If there is no wind and no watercraft you can get some nice night photos.

Yup, no hugs for kiddos. What was weird is some kids were so starved for affection they'd come up and hug the staff if they liked them and kids liked me, probably because although I am a old grandpa, I act like a kid sometimes and I treat kids with the same respect I treat most adults (except a few who post on getbig). LOL.

In some cases there are custodial issues which come into play. We had instances where non-custodial parents would show up and try to take their kids. This could be one reason why some parents didn't want their kids photos publically displayed.

On the other hand, some youngsters start sending their own photos via their smart phones to others and often post them on social media websites. My youngest granddaughter posted a photo of herself on Facebook that although she wasn't exposed in anyway, she looked incredibly sexy for her age. I think she was only 14 at the time. She's 16 now and her current photo isn't so misleading. Perhaps my son or daughter-in-law had a discussion with her. Makes me happy that my kids are adults now.

Teutonic - the bikers in Australia are by and large criminal scum. The Government is doing the right thing kicking them out.

As for changing names, get this - my friend from the coast said there was one guy who joined/started a new gang - the name "The Mongols". Hillarious thing was the guy then tattoted the name MONGOLS right on his forehead (not realizing that a mongol is a word used to describe people with a mental/genetic disorder called Downs Syndrome). Anyhow he became a laughing stock for a while and pics of this guy "trying to look tough" were circulated around. I'll see if I can find a pic and post it up.

Trasvimna - no probs with friends riding around on bikes. Its the criminal, bullying gang scum that is the problem (and I hope you don't have any of them as "friends"). Also, regarding your comments about the hotel industry, when you want to be investing is exactly at the time of least demand - the bottom of a cycle before a big pickup. The only way for the Coast is up right now, with foreign investment, Commonwealth Games, migration to Queensland, flowon effect from Syd and Melbourne property prices. I've been a very successful investor by always following a very obvious and basic principle - buy low and sell high. And now is definitely the time to buy. The Gold Coast is the most volatile property market in Australia, which is great for people who can get their timing right, but bad for suckers who buy in during a peak. I'm predicting prices to more than double over the next 5 years on the Gold Coast, so anyone wanting to move there should seriously buy now before they get priced out by rich Asians and interstate investors.

I haven't had any trouble with bikers. They love their bikes and hang out with mates at pubs, etc. I believe some gangs were involved in the drug trade. What is true is many people are afraid of gangs or at least uncomfortable around them. Occasionally, the gangs are at war with each other and injuries and fatalities occur. When those things happen the media makes the bikers sound like primitive individuals who should be controlled.

Governments have to keep order and peace in communities, states and countries and that is what they are trying to do in Queensland. It may well be that just a few gangs need controlling but the government is doing something about it. I doubt many people will complain. When you restrict the freedom of any group in a society you do some harm to innocent parties somewhere.

Thanks Teutonic - Hey are MC and what is called CMG (criminal motorcycle gang) the same thing? I have no problem with guys who like to ride bikes who form a club, and wear funny outfits etc, but if people get together as criminals and bullies to intimidate others that's another thing. Anyhow, I do hope they don't come back to the Gold Coast and move on to other places. :)

If you were going to buy any areas you would choose? I heard Nobbys Beach, Mermaid beach are the best due to having actual houses (not highrise) and the most appealing to wealthy buyers etc, good restaurants and cafes. Or maybe Mermaid Waters (close to there?)

PS - Here's an idea. If they like fighting each other so much, how about doing it in an organized way, man to man, in a kind of huge Roman-type ring, with fights to the death. Then we could really see who the toughest was, and also charge a lot of money for people to view it (maybe even televize it). Then, not only would they slowly wipe each other out, but it would be great entertainment in the process - a new business idea for you perhaps?

PS - back to bodybuilding, I heard quite a few docs on the Gold Coast now prescribe pharma-test as "hormone replacement" therapy. Not sure about GH though, but sounds like its pretty easy to get a regular high quality testosterone supply on the Gold Coast. And no schmoeing needed to get the scrips either lol :)

Holy shit I hope you are just being sarcastic….. You realise that you are talking about a full patch member of the Mongols there? They just patched over all the Finks in Australia….. Huge news in that world…

Some members are good friends of mine. I am not part of a club nor will I ever be… Its not what I want but they are still friends since I grew up with them for years…. Whether they are HA, Jokers, Mongels or Bandidos….. etc etc…. I just don't get caught up in their shit.

Don't really see too much here in Melbourne anymore… When I lived in Adelaide it was EVERYWHERE….. Gold Coast… They are everywhere… If anyone thinks they are not they are crazy…

Remember the Kickboxing event on the Gold Coast and the shoot out later???

I had a bikie at my gym. He was a member for years and years. Nice bloke. His girlfriend had the best body in the gym! Anyway, Sandy Harbutt made a movie that was released in 1974 called "Stone". He produced, directed and starred in it!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_(1974_film)

The movie was about a motorcycle gang in Sydney. The movie is now a cult one. For some reason Sandy never made another feature movie. He even gave me a copy of it years ago.

Near the end the gang beat up the cop. I asked him about this and he said you can't trust cops!
