Title: Progress Towards 500 Lb Squat Goal
Post by: GymTime on February 15, 2014, 08:23:10 AM
Did 425 on squat recently.  500 is the goal.

Any other getbiggers squatting in the 400 or 500 range?

Completed a 12 week squat cycle last week. Final workout was 575 x 2 x 3.  No suit. Big 5 type neoprene knee sleeve. Power belt.   Ran the cycle to help my dead lifts. Seemed to work.

425 for a clean full squat is a solid number. Nice work.

Allright Gymtime, I'm trying to hit 5 plates as well, maybe start a getbigger race to 5 plates thread with vids posted as proof?  ;D

Tommywishbone: Solid ass lift. Which cycle was that?

MT, the cycle was a slightly modified version of this. Numbers didn't quite workout but it severed it's purpose.

Congrats on the squat, a solid rep done with ease.

How long did it take you to reach that goal and what kind of program are you using to get to 500?

Not a big squatter over here. I prefer front squats with a ROM to the ground and limited rest.
I can't remember the last time I witnessed someone use full ROM while doing squats. It seems I need to join a new gym.

When I was younger 575 for 3 reps at 180lbs.  After 30 years training, my knees and low back cannot handle that anymore.

20 rep squat workouts will take you where you want to be.  Add more weight each week and keep going for 20 reps.  Back cycle the poundage then do it again, etc...

Trained legs today with two 22 year old cats.

Squats

135 x 10
135 x 20
135 x 30
135 x 40
135 x 50

No sitting down between sets. No hanging on to anything between sets. Full, smooth bodybuilding squats. When one guy finishes his reps another guy starts their set immediately. It hurt- a lot.

Joe, you're knowledgeable on this subject. Do you think taller guys should stick to leg presses and hack squats? Squats fuck my back up so I very rarely do them. I've had countless people check my form and they maintain I'm pretty much spot on. This even goes for the S&C trainer of a professional rugby team in the UK. AND a world champion power lifter (Google 'Genesis Gym' in Alperton if you don't believe me) My back still hurt. Like a pins and needles tingling in the lower part of my spine. Therefore I don't bother. What say you?

IMO, there are a lot of variables. Increasing weights to fast, volume, recovery, weak transverse abdominis, weak posterior chain, bad technique, etc. Taller people would have more of a risk for back injury just because longer limbs and tight hips. To beat this, you should progress slowly, less volume. Slow your progressions. With deadlifts, we ALWAYS start with rack pulls instead of off the ground.

If you're consistently hurting your back doing big compound lifts, then you likely have some weakness there and/or structural issues (or use too much weight/poor form).

The key to being bull strong, is having a strong, stable back. I broke two bones in my back a few years ago (not training related) and slowly built it back up using high rep stiff-leg deadlifts, good morning, back extensions etc.

As for the big compound lifts, you're one hundred percent right - you shouldn't treat them as "ego lifts", that's when stuff snaps and breaks. Instead focus on getting strong slowly, with good form. Tweaking your back or a knee or a shoulder or whatever is bound to happen if you train hard in any way, its recognising when to back off to avoid major injury.

it was an 18" box, rolling forward off it with no deload on the box I assume.

a 425 box squat to a below parallel box with a pause and relaxing the hips is the equivalent of @ 500 lb regular squat.

Squats even when done perfectly can still tweak your back.. unfortunately there's no good horizontal leg press at any of my current gyms so I'm stuck with slow, paused squats as my only leg work

We have 12" squat boxes here in the gym. It was the box plus 2 1"pads. My son is 5'11 so he was at parallel. There is video on my instagram of him hitting 405 about a month ago. I will be posting his 425lbs this evening. Tonight is ME upper so he's looking for a 275lb bench.

I use a 17" box which is about an inch below my kneecap, then swap to the 14" but the weight difference I can handle is staggering.   I wonder if I'm doing this shit right, lol.

the difference is HUGE with box squats. I shake my head at the tiny tits I see bouncing off the bench with far too much weight and horrible form.

I use a 10" box and take 3 seconds to lower, pause a second then squeeze up, 8-10 reps

If you go wide stance, monolift, parallel box with foam etc it becomes much easier, but regular stance with a low box are brutal when done like a bodybuilder not a donut muncher

theres a video on youtube of a legit 700lb Olympic squatter barely making high 5's off a deep box.

Thanks, mawse, now I don't feel so bad.  I do medium stance, release hips, sit back, then squeeze up.  I generally keep the reps under 5 though, often doing 8-10 sets of doubles with a strict minute rest.   Always with cambered bar.

I don't really doubt Coach could do 550, he's a strong dude, but would like to see the vid anyways to see the depth of the squat, stance, etc.

I wouldn't put it past Coach to squat 550. He has a good build for squat in my amateur opinion.  It's harder for taller guys.

Why participate in this thread anabolicho if you don't like squatting?  Just stick to the arm don threads.

Cause they use the racks and cages for what they're ment for. Go off for 6-8 months, train correctly and then post the results. I suspect you'd never do that...you'd have to pass up to many black hookers and actually train hard.

Go back to flexing your tiny little 17" arms while jacking off your dealer for bunk steroids and stay out of the racks, analsissyhomo.

You should only hope to one day be a good man, not a deadbeat dad with self esteem issues.

You should be more concerned about your back, or lack thereof.

Bump.

Update:  Finally hit 500 lb squat goal.  Technically 495 (5 plates on each side).  Consistently getting it almost every week now.

Nice job..

And Halo (or your gimmick) stay off a thread about lifting weights, go back to your "curls for girls" twink workouts, with the rest of the 16 year olds.

Well, it's been about 2 years since the last update.

I've hit my goal of 545 lbs on squat.  Consistently getting it each week now, and have also gotten 495x5.  I'm now aiming at 6 plates (585 lbs).  Hoping to hit the new goal within the next 6 months.

Stance is narrow and depth is to parallel.  No belt.

I was shooting for 425 - or even, frankly, 405 would be fine.

I am the type of person who hits 370-385 for two deep reps, the result of not training legs as hard as I should.  For 170, I'm fine with that though - but I would like to hit 405.  I think that's a very respectful lift for 170.  Basically 315/405/495, I would say are all respectable lifts for 170.

Very good lifts for 170.

why no belt?

why no belt?

Personal preference.

1  I never really have any back issues from squatting, so I haven't seen a need for it.
2  If I do wear a belt, it tends to cut into my stomach some along the edges, which I find distracting.

I do wear knee sleeves.  The knees are under a lot of pressure from the heavy weights and I want to ensure I keep everything tight around the knee area.  I don't have any knee issues, but it's a good preventative measure.
