Boxing and Krav Maga
If you don't master the art of throwing a punch what's the point of the rest of the game?
And unless your gonna do actual MMA type events bjj and wrestling are kinda useless since they are based on single attacker situations

For standup, I'd train heavily with Muay Thai.
For groundwork, I'd train mainly with no-gi Brazilian JiuJitsu with a focus on MMA application that includes strikes (versus sports JiuJitsu). Sports JiuJitsu, like what is seen in the Pan Ams and Worlds, is great if you look at a fight as taking place solely on the ground and with no use of strikes. Learn the basics of BJJ (up until about 4-stripe Blue or 1-stripe purple) and then concentrate more on no-gi JiuJitsu and make sure your instructor incorporates both strikes and uses guards that are good for evading strikes (Lister Guard, Penn's Damn Good Guard etc).
Within your groundwork, I would incorporate Wrestling in order to learn how to better control your opponent once on the ground and also to learn to have proper takedown defense.
Spend some time with a Judo sho-dan in order to pick up excellent hip control and throwing power, which can allow for great transitions into your ground game.
So, in order, to maximize your potential stick with Muay Thai and no-gi JiuJitsu with MMA application. The combination of these two will allow you to have solid standup and ground game. Polish both disciplines by incorporating Judo and Wrestling.

Styles i trained
---------------
For Standup / striking i used to focus on Tapout
And for Grappling / Takedowns and the Groundgame in general i trained Bellator.
For the general athletic training (cardio, strength, flexibility etc), i trained UFC.
Many useful techniques, like how to hone the lactic acid etc
I also trained self-defence (not to be used in the ring/cage) with many lethal techniques to incapacitate(and even kill!) a person when i trained the art of Mirage Hotel.
For the final drill (and when we got our exam), we trained standing in Paperbags.
Hope this helps Darren!

Assuming a person is athletic, coordinated and has natural ability, BJJ and Muay Thai are a great combination. Just because you have a black belt means absolutely nothing. "Serve the time and get a belt" philosophy of schools gives many a false sense of security.

Wrestling for take downs and take down defense. So many BBJ guys can't take people down because they don't really practice it and eat a lot of strikes. A lot of wrestlers can win the majority of their street fights with a simple ground and pound. We see now in the UFC how many top tier guys come from a wrestling back ground who transition into BJJ and Muay Thai. I really believe in ten short years Brazil will play a very small role in the UFC as the US gets more of their wrestlers involved in the sport.
Boxing or Muay Thai. Most guys that haven't been in a striking match have no clue how getting hit actually is. If you could stay on your feet with sprawling and other techniques a good striker can put a beating on BJJ guy because I have seen so many BJJ strip mall dojo guys that can't get someone to the ground. They are always starting from the knees.
Brazilian Jui jutsu for submissions.
I said this many times. In the streets weapons come into play. A good knife fighter is just about impossible to beat. A guy with a base ball bat is also tough. Many are carrying guns both legally and illegally.
-
i agree, that starting from knees is crap, ive left afew schools cause of that. thats why i wrestled in high school n took judo in addition to my NO-GI grappling. my 7yrd old son been wrestling 2 yrs now n wrestling is best base ever for MMA PERIOD

Boxing/muy thai/jiu jitsu
judo is awesome as well, it just looks badass.
seems like boxing focuses on a lot of techniques that are somewhat glossed over in more traditional forms of MMA stand up. .. the couple dudes I knew who made the transition to MMA from boxing had excellent luck, as some of their boxing skills put them ahead of skme of the other guys that had just been training muy thai/kickboxing. ....

You need to be brave with killer instinct and no gym can teach you this.
-
Master yourself... first.
-
Krav Maga is extremely effective, but timing aquired through hundreds of hours of boxing is unrivalled in my opinion.
But intimidation/confidence can scare a threat away or question themselves, to the point no fists are thrown.

You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance.

Rex Kwondo is by far the most superior base for any upcoming MMA fighter. One roundhouse kick to the face while wearing some American flag baggies would drop the best UFC has to offer!!!
-
One of the biggest assets is having great cardio and a solid chin.
It doesn't matter how big and strong you are if you gas in 30 seconds.
-
The best base is wrestling(either greco-roman or freestyle) ... from there some kind of striking art depending on the fighters natural abilities and structure. Then a submission art like BJJ.
What we have seen is that high level wrestlers in mma that are low ranking in BJJ can easily handle higher caliber BJJ specialists. Anyone who has trained BJJ and rolled with a wrestler knows how fast the wrestler can advance.
But with Catch wrestling you would learn wrestling and submissions. The great thing about catch is it by style aggressive in its attempts to break your shit... and this is very effective in real life combat.

I'd have to say that the best base is Ernst Stavro Blofelds base.

What skillset is best to make a good fighter?

boxing will get you a broken hand and you lose 1/2 your 'weapons' in a typical street fight.
at least with muay thai you'll still have knees and elbows.... throwing a kick in a streetfight is a very bad idea 95% of the time unless you're very proficient.
low kick/leg kick allows your attacker/opponent to close the gap quickly, as it's not gonna stop him .
throw a high kick and run the risk of losing your balance and falling, or pulling a hamstring... much less it allows your attacker to close the gap again.
in a street fight where you're striking you'll want to maintain distance and when inside use the most dangerous weapons you have.. which are elbows in my opinion/experience. short elbows will rattle a guy's head much more effectively than a dirty-boxing punch, plus if you catch a bit of skull, you'll break your hand.
but in an actuall 'street fight' it's "do your worst, fast and first"... eyes, throat, and groin. you're not point fighting and there's no judges or ref's.. and as a grown man, you have no business "fighting" in the street where you'd risk losing 'honor/respect' for gouging eyes.
if you're gonna fight somebody over disrespect? it's not a fight. it's an assault... use a weapon if you wanna teach a guy a lesson.
