Title: The average dude
Post by: the trainer on March 12, 2014, 07:51:31 AM
The average dude in the street cannot bench 135 pounds, i see many guys in the gym with two 35 pounds on the bar doing bench press and I am like what the fuck so many weak dudes walking around I could seriously hurt one of these guys with one punch.

I was 18 the first time I actually picked up a weight to train, and I benched 185 for three sloppy reps.  Pretty pathetic compared to what I peaked at, or what I can do now.

It depends how old you are. Adult yes. As a kid no. When I first started working out as a kid, my arms went from 12 inches to 14.75 inches in a little over 2 years. Other kids would ask me to flex the guns all the time. In the hallway, at parties, at burger joints. I thought I was king shit back then. Then I went from the school gym to the local YMCA and saw black dudes with 18 inch arms. I learned my place then and there.

No you didn't.

Not saying you couldn't do it now or twice the weight, but you didn't lift 110lbs right away. That's 50kg dumbbells in old money. I've been training 18 years and besides myself, I've seen less than 5 people lift that or beyond. For real that is, not an internet fantasy or blatant lie. Less than 5 people AND that's trained people. Only once have I gone heavier than the 50kg dumbbells and that was the 60s which I managed 3 reps before failing into oblivion. There was in need to go higher than 50s as that shit blast your muscles just as much as the 70kg dumbbells would.

So no my friend, you're mistaken on those numbers.

Dude, I meant a 110lb (50kg) barbell. First time I tried the exercise and got a few reps with it.  :D

I doubt I could handle 110lb dumbells now, let alone back then.  ;D

A big bench press doesn't mean a hard punch. nor does lifting weights give you fighting abilty.

Very few people in my gym go past the one plate a side on squats are benches and a plate and a half for deadlifts.
I have trained with a guy on and off for over 10 years now and he has never benched one plate a side.

Aaaah, my bad. Understood that wrong. Sorry. Yes, 50kg barbell is totally doable for newbies. They'd struggle with stabilizing the weight during movement but it's doable.

I've not benched since last year so not sure what I can lift now. On dumbells I'm lifting the 35kg's per hand at the moment and won't go above the 40kgs. That's more than enough. My days of pushing the 50s are long fucking gone.

I wasn't totally untrained the first time I benched/used weights. I had been doing push ups daily for a few months previously.
I had heard somewhere that you're lifting two/thirds of your bodyweight when you do a push up - so I guessed that I would easily rep out 50kg on the bench as I weighed around 75kg at the time. However, I remember being surprised by how much more difficult it felt.  ;D
