Sure they can all run the 40 in 4.1 and squat 2000lbs. I'm also sure the fans drink beer all game because it is so exciting. ::)

I've learned a lot watch soccer. It's still fashionable to put highlights in your hair and faking an injury and falling to the ground in agony is part of the strategy.
-
Is Obama forcing you to watch it coach?

Soccer.... so boring.
-
Soccer.... so boring.
Baseball.... so boring.
-
Baseball.... so boring.
Agreed.
my order of popular sports from irrelevant, to shitty, to awesome.
Soccer - irrelevent in the US, boring, possibly homosex
Baseball - shitty and boring
Basketball - hebrews showing off trying to out hebrew each other
Hockey - meh, but random violence is entertaining
Then a huge gap,,
Then,
Rugby - (cause its almost football)
Football (NFL, not that gay soccer shit) - because awesome.

I'm a sports nut, but football (soccer) and rugby top my list, but can watch 50 over cricket (or tight test cricket) athletics, basketball, NFL (prefer highlights), shit I've even watched curling and all the other shite on offer at various Olympics.
Must be a territorial thing.
-
Can understand why a basketball or hockey fan would consider soccer boring since those sports are played end-to-end and soccer isn't.
But American football and baseball? Seriously ???
Barely 5-10 minutes of combined action, if that.
-

Ive given up trying to explain to non US folk how we really dont give a shit about soccer here.
They're trying so hard to push it on us during this years soccer season (whatever it is you guys call it), constantly running ads saying things like "its not football but please be understanding and give it a chance" (dead srs), but we really just dont care as a culture, and only an extremely small amount of Americans even bother to turn it on. (And theyre usually immigrants)
At my gym tbey had the soccer championship thingy on TV and there seriously was ads trying to convinces us to give it a chance. Hilariously, 3 or 4 people complained and they changed the channel to a fckin aports channel talking about Lebron possibly taking a shit. People here would rather watch someone speculate on a hebrews home life than they would the world championships of soccer.
Ita hard to make Non US people grasp this since its so popular everywhere else.

Go on holidays anywhere in Europe, Africa or South America, buy a football, go to a park or public pitches and you can get a game. Anywhere. It is ingrained, simple to pick up and play, no pads or lines necessary can use jumpers as goal posts. It will happen in USA eventually. US is just allergic to change, just look at it clinging to imperial measurements when it makes NO sense.

It looks like it's falling out of the sky hitting him in the head. (wishful thinking).

Sorry, Coach, but baseball is just as boring as soccer.

Soccer is essentially socialism.

A few weeks ago on Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, he did a piece about how these teams are paying off officials to throw games. Happened a lot during the World Cup playoffs.

In what way? The rich clubs buy all the best players leading to hegemony.
US sports and the draft system and wage caps is communism personified.

Yes, poor Alex Rodriguez is still getting payed ($275mil) for being suspended. Damn that communism. lol

I think he's trolling. However, in the past, I've actually heard some Americans call soccer a "Communist" sport. ???
Although bear in mind that mental retardation is quite common in America so helps explain such comments. ;D

1st baseball player at #23, behind 6 footballers. Not A Rod either.
I think US system is better if I'm honest. Real Madrid, Barcelona and to a lesser extent other superpowers in football just pay crazy money for the best players. Three +$100m players in attack on one team alone, each getting paid close to $500k/week just in after tax salaries, ignoring sponsorship. It is ridiculous. Add in TV deals and rich get richer, less teams are competitive.

Draws are a disgrace, as a paying consumer I deserve a result!
Only one break in play? I've got a whole marketing budget to spend here for fuck sake.

I don't know how US sports fans deal with the breaks, would drive me insane. I can't watch TV there, when we watch Simpsons or Southpark, for example, screen goes black for a break very often yet we don't have ads, show goes on, I imagine Americans do get ads every black out. I'd go nuts.
Re draws, the concept of league v cup is a strange beast. When you have a tight league campaign, like 2011/12 premier league, it is most enthralling thing ever. When it is decided before the last game it is anti-climactic. You pay a price with fairness (a draw is a fair result) and decision (winner takes all) with the odd crazy climax.

Ads are vital for the economy to grow and how else am I going to know what to buy?! Nothing more American than getting into more debt.
Soccer would be more watchable if it was split into quarters, I also think they should introduce the option of specialist throw in takers. Get a good sponsor out of that position too! Could even wear a costume.

I'm pretty handy at throwing, nailed my son in the head from 25 metres when he was running away from me today, but THIS is impressive.

I was kinda surprised how many here actually were watching. Every bar had it on, and everyone seemed into it. I gave it a shot for a few minutes, not for me. Then again, golf, NASCAR, horse racing, all popular too, but I can't sit through it. Love baseball, though, so what the fuck do I know.
If you enjoy it, knock yourself out.

Ok..our NFL coaches are ALMOST comparable to soccer.

Theyre really making a big push trying to get it in here... probably lots of money to be made. I see all kinds of commercials and pushing our team. Frankly I had no idea we were even competing until someone started lamenting about how unfair something was compared to the Germans or some shit.
-

Club coaches make more, closer to $20million but they work a lot more, 100 hour weeks and can lose job with the click of a finger. It is getting inflated year on year with ridiculous TV deals and oil money buying clubs. Qataris and Dubai sovereign funds are buying clubs and giving them BILLIONS. Rest is crazy TV money, high ticket prices (with sold out stadiums every match), crazy sponsorship ($110m PER YEAR for shirt sponsorship) etc etc. Seems like a bubble but I don't know. Clubs lose money unlike US franchises.

Damn!
Worldwide $$$$ Joe. The fact that NFL coaches make so much when its such a small sport comparatively is nothing short of amazing.

Caught me off guard as well. "Thought we all hated this shit together?!" I screamed, but no one was listening. Really, though, people stood outside on the sidewalk, watching a local bar's patio tv. In the morning, a couple weeks back. The place was overrun with fans.
No one ever talks about it the rest of the year, I've never heard a word. Then, BAM! Had no idea.
-
Damn!
To give you an idea how retarded the system is, one team that got relegated (came in last three and moved to a lower division) in English premier league this season Fulham, have higher wages than team that came runners up in Champions League (equivalent of Superbowl I guess) because they come from Spain. You're talking shit players in shit teams making millions per year. In squads of 23 players, unlike basketball.
I was amazed when I saw a Seahawks player, the guy doing all the shit talking last year I think, was making $600k/year. I mean that is good money for someone who probably has no education and isn't a superstar, but we are numbed by seeing mediocre people making $50k/week. The money is out of all proportion to their talent and, realistically, their earning potential. At least people like Lebron, Messi etc sell seats and get people watching. Bet you never heard of Samuel Eto. He used to earn €400K/WEEK (+$500K) playing for a Russian team after his best days were long behind him. Now he ONLY makes $200k/wk.

I completely get that. That's why it through me off a little when he said they were getting around $8mil.

All games involving an inflated ball are an embarrassment to mankind. I can understand children enjoying such frivolous activities, but grown men.
Just for the record, posing in a thong on stage in front of other men is equally embarrassing.

Do the Qataris and other oil rich countries try and invest those billions in investing in making their own home grown teams?

yeab but they get 80 dollars per viewer in uk v 8c or so in china. Cheap cun ts.

Is it the trapped air that troubles you most, or the size of the ball? Most unique sports critique I've ever come across, I must admit.
-

There's a crazy bit at the end of Andrea Pirlo's book (he plays for Italy and Juventus, is prob 36 or so now) about when he was 33 (in 2011 anyway) and a Qatari club approached him. They offered him €10m/year. He said no. They offered his kids English teachers, he said he wanted Italian speaking kids. They said they would build a school and employ only Italian speaking teachers. They asked did he like cars. They offered him a "few" Ferraris. They said if he ever felt homesick, there was a private jet waiting on the runway whenever he wanted. He still said no, so they said "11m per yer? €12m? 13m?" etc. This is for someone who was 33 at the time, past his prime, to go to a club where a man and his dog walking by would probably double the attendance.
Look at Qatar on a map and it makes the whole thing even more insane. It is like a footnote on Saudi Arabia.
